Correction - Mercedes finally did add a couple of the features I complained about as standard for 2019, though not for 2018 (specifically heated seats, keyless go, and dual-zone climate control). Can confirm as I have those $9 Amazon specials on my 2018 C300 lol. Except mine don't bleed that bad even on film. And they don't have that odd bulge and they actually LOOK stock and don't look like I shredded the socket installing them.

I have a 2015 GLA45 AMG, the same car with a hatch. It has dual-zone auto climate, rear camera, navigation, the sport mode exhaust plus upgraded seats. All these make for a better experience. And we added coilovers for even better handling with the same ride, that I find acceptable. Yes the DCT can be a pain, but if you put it in Sport or Manual (a part of the exhaust package - which this car doesn't have) the clutch engagement for the DCT gets better. We still love ours!
Right I still have my 2014 CLA 45 AMG and I have the panoramic sunroof, dual climbing control and heated seats and a back up camera. I don’t know where the hell he picked this car from.🤨

Look at the projectors closely. You see that the hole in the door panel is a bit larger than the projector/light. It's pathetic how shitty it has been done...
I drive a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Limited. Has way more luxury features than this. Trizone auto climate control, keyless entry/start, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency collision braking, backup camera with trajectory and cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled seats, etc. Even the rear seats are heated!
ctk4949 it is aftermarket. Look at the fitment, it doesn’t line up. You can buy those for like $20 on amazon. The illuminated Star is also a cheap aftermarket thing you can buy. (Or have the dealer rip you off for $500)

I just don't understand. My mom just purchased a 2016 C300 with the AMG package and there isn't a feature that thing doesn't have. And the MSRP was $54k, the same as this one. I have no idea how the ACTUAL AMG model doesn't have any features. Very odd.

Is this REALLY a CLA 45? Or did the owner buy a used base model CLA and slap fake badges and fools people on Turo? 1. The door light projectors are aftermarket aliexpress parts. 2. The front brake caliper cover looks aftermarket. 3. The info screen is a base model version (unless MB really does give you base parts regardless of engine trim)
It doesn't seem weird to me. In a lot of countries in Europe, when you order a German car, you have to check a long list of options, the base models often come with the smallest wheels you could find, basic manual cloth seats, no AC, no backup camera, no parking sensors, no lane departure, no GPS, no cruise control, halogen headlights, no metallic paint,... So you could get a base model for 25kEUR, but if you want it well equipped you'll have to add 10kEUR of options, and another 10k for a decent engine. And it goes the same with supposedly high end models such as the MB AMG, BMW M or Audi S/RS, but with some sportier options being in the base model.

the amg package is all looks no go lol you pay for the 400hp engine and they charge huge for options my 2019 cla amg 45 was 54k to start 3k for recaro seats 5k for limited slip dynamic package .they just kill you with the $$$$$ options so you can have a plain jane amg 45 for 54 grand and it looks like a cla 250 for spent 75k and get a cla amg that looks like a true proformance car

Considering it’s in pretty bad shape to begin with, with some cheap ebay parts added, I wouldn’t trust the jerkiness of the automatic or the suspensions of the car. Please do another review, this car is clearly a bad example of the CLA45....

I always felt like all Audi models have had the same shape and grille. Nothing changed over the past 20 years in terms of design. Same goes for bmw. I love the different curvy shapes that Mercedes’ experiments with here. Just my opinion though.

OMG!!! Doug, I adore your reviews. I'll be honest with you, I probably watch them at work more than I should, and at home I watch them at least a couple of times a week. I had been wondering when you were going to get around to reviewing the CLA class, but I was a little disappointed when I watched this video. I don't know why they gave you a 45 lacking so many options, but my 2015 CLA 250 (not even the AMG version) has all those options you mentioned and then some. I paid 36k for my CLA 250 in 2016 and it has dual climate control, heated seats, panoramic sunroof, key less go, illuminated star, AMG styling package, touch start, heck... I even had them throw in some free winter floor mats!! I got a very good deal since my CLA 250 was a Mercedes dealership loaner with only 4,500 miles. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones? I'm actually kind of glad that I chose the 250 instead of the 45 because the difference in the price of the scheduled maintenance is noticeable. Less times at the dealership, more money in my pocket, I'm not complaining. I love my car and I'm in it for the long haul. Thank you very much for all that you do to bring joy to us car guys, but I had to be the one to step in and tell you not to judge the CLA class on a subpar rental that you were given. Peace brother!!!!
I have a few cars and my daily is a 2001 CLK55 AMG 5.5V8 354BHP 510tq, has sunroof, satnav, dual auto climate and heated seats and cost me 6k. The cla is a girl's plastic pretend AMG, check my vids I have an exhaust clip it even sounds better
By the way that they look, I reckon that the lit-up Mercedes logo on the front and the puddle lighting are both aftermarket. The way the puddle light emitter is set up in the door is very shoddy, doesn't look like Mercedes would send a car out like that.
So someone bought a totally stripper version of the CLA45 and put it on Turo ... it happens, but I don't think its representative of the car itself. Browse around, most used CLA250s and 45s have all (or most) of the features -- sunroof, heated seats, dual-zone auto climate control, backup camera and even keyless-go. The sunroof option was somewhat expensive, but everything else was cheap to add and was often equipped with a single option (premium 1 iirc) package. Yes it's crazy that none of those features came as standard, particularly on the CLA45 since it's so expensive, but ... they were options and they were commonly equipped. You can rag on Mercedes for getting people with tons of little options rather than doing these things as standard, but you make it sound as though none of these features were even available for the 2016 model year. They were. This was an owner that made a lot of bad decisions in his/her car buying process more than anything. All that being said, I agree the CLA45 isn't worth the money. You're paying a ton extra over the CLA250 for a car that is 90% identical to the 250 and just has a (much) nicer engine. Just shows you what a difference it makes to start with a higher-end car if you're going to get an AMG version -- the c-class, for example, is clearly a nicer car, and the C43 and C63 are proportionately much nicer because of it.
The doug effect just dropped this cars value around 5-8% in the US. They should never made a backup camera optional in 2016. Its standard in a 12k nissan versa.

James Campagna ya that’s why CLA is one of the most successful launch for Mercedes. Older CLA before 2017 I would agree to certain extent but 2017 and after. The car is seen as a very good value to me. And yes everyone has their own opinions. Bought almost 3 years and still no regrets. For the money, it was so much worth it. There are down sides of course but I got a good price on it and it doesn’t depreciate as much as people think. Try KBB and compare to the Lexus LCF or RCF. This car is a stepping stone for younger buyers who sacrifice comfort for brand, technology, sporty, and performance. Name a new car in 2016-2017 that you think I should have gotten instead. I’ll explain why I didn’t get those vehicles. I did a lot of research on this and every car in the segment and this is by far the best one and fulfill my desire. Check my video, I made it look amazing. And again, this is just beginning. GT 63 S, E 63 S, or AMG GTR are all in my radar in the future. Mercedes did their marketing right with this car. This is why their new CLA/A class will be the first car that has the latest technology “Hey Mercedes” technology, etc before even the S class.

As a German I was always surprised at how Doug reviewed the options in German cars. Here it is well known that if you buy any domestic vehicle without options, you will get a metal box with a 50-90hp engine and a manual transmission. Audi for example treats cruise control (not adaptive, just regular old cruise) as an extra. - The result of that is that two German vehicles in Germany are almost never alike. I for example have a relatively loaded 2017 car that doesn't have a backup camera either and the reason for that is that the previous owner simply didn't check the corresponding box in the online configurator. This is not all bad because I don't have to pay for some shit I don't care about. For example electronically adjusted seats are a feature I would never spend a single Euro on. Keyless Go on the other hand is something I would never want to miss.
Yep. There was a time where you can get manual windows on an S-Class if you felt like it. In America however, cars are optioned so much differently, especially luxury cars. Instead of being able to select individual options, most features are bundled up into separate packages. I think the German way is so much better.

CocoPlayer actually it’s 0-100 in closer to 14 seconds. Also speed isn’t always the answer, I’m sure that Merc will struggle to get to 100k miles while I’m at 122k and counting now
I have a story about this car. When I was in HighSchool about 2 years ago I had a part time job at TurtleWax in the detail shop. I was assigned this exact car but in the color red. I got inside, started it up and said wow this thing sounds awesome! I put it in reverse tap the gas and IT LITERALLY TOOK OFF! I slammed the brakes... the car wouldn't move unless you hit the gas. So Im trying to maintain a slow speed. I get it in the shop and as im cleaning the inside im looking around just wondering why it looked so empty. Long stroy short. This car sucks when it comes to value. Go with an Audi instead. Everything Doug said was spot on.
Being that this a privately owned rental car, I'm willing to bet the owner skipped all the options to minimize the price, but got the AMG so he can rent it for the same as other, probably better-equipped AMG's in the area. Step 1: Minimize OTD price. Step 2: ??? Step 3: Profit!
This is THE worst possible car Doug could have reviewed. Very poor and base spec, car has been messed with (you can see from the missing logo on the engine cover and the 9$ Amazon spot lights on the door). The CLA’s got a refresh for 2019 and I really hope you review one of those, this review was a disservice to the CLA.
Yep! It even seems as a fake 45. Where is the stitched leather on the dashboard. And the seats. Those are from a normal version of the car, called "premium". The 45 has different seats. And from what I know in the US they only sell it with automatic double zone climate control with the rear vents. Even the basic version. And the backup camera. Why isn't there? It is included in the "sport" called version (two steps lower than the 45). Same as the navigation system. I don't know. But this isn't the real thing.
I genuinely believe this is a fake AMG. I have a CLA45 and this has nothing mine has: no bucket seats, no stitched dash, no grip pedals, no carbon fiber everything, different infotainment screen, and I have every feature he complained about not having.

I was one of the first to get one of these in Australia at the end of 2013. In Australia there only is one version, a fully optioned one. Every single option is included. All you do is choose your colour, wheel colour and seat belt colour. Mine was white, silver 19 inch multi spoke rims and red seat belts. I traded my MY12 STI for it and was the best thing I owned.
My CLA have navigation...auto.climate control..dig.climate control..backup camera...sunroof....heated-cooled seats in front...vents in back.....doug where did u find that poor mercedes 😂 and maybe for usa market its just poor
Glad to see your honest review. I have the CLA 250 4 Matic. I really love it it's the perfect size for me and has plenty of power for my need and very comfortable to drive. I really like how low they sit gives you good handling and a more sporty feel.
My wife's base model 2017 Toyota Corolla iM has dual zone climate control; however it does have only half the drive wheels and half the horsepower, but then again, it costs less than a third of what this merc costs, also has an extra pedal over the merc.
This particular CLA45 is absolutely emblematic of the fake baller life (sorry if no one uses that word anymore, but I'm old). No options? Check. Cheap-looking, ricer accoutrements (even if factory optioned)? Check. Putting it up on Turo? Check. Also wouldn't be shocked if the owner lives in some cheap apartment, too, and essentially lives paycheck to paycheck.
Re the take off and throttle response. Thats not how they drive, so there is something wrong with that one. Its critically important that the engine and DCT box have all the firmware updates to latest. The factory shipped firmware was indeed shocking. Generally the dealers will update these during the Services. On that note, Servicing is the BAD point on the A45 / CLA45 / GLA45. Its SOOOO expensive. In the UK the service is about 800 UK pounds a go. So 1000 dollars. The ride quality issues were all fixed in the Facelift version. Sept 2015 onwards. You have a pre-facelift car in the video.
HOONSTARS exactly. I daily drive a 428i X-Drive BMW, our family has the E43 AMG and an E400 Lux Package. I will say the real BMW’s and Mercedes don’t start until you get to the Full Size Sedan that can be optioned as a Coupe! Love the E-Class!

Heated and ventilated seats are luxury options. Want them but don't want to pay what the manufacturer is asking for them? Get a different car from a brand asking for less. You can't compare it to a windshield, which is an important safety feature, or door handles, which are pretty much required if your car has doors.
My 2013 A45 (hatch version of the CLA) has all of those options, including the AMG bucket seats, aero kit, exhaust and wheels which that one doesn't - all optional extras... including panaoramic roof, Distronic (adaptive cruise control) and Parktronic (parallel parks itself). Options mate!
I have a 2016 WRX Limited. I payed under 25K. It has a sunroof, heated seats, pockets on the back of the seats. I can't believe a 50K Mercedes doesn't come with more. Ridiculous!

I think in general the door projectors seem a bit tacky even when from the manufacturer. Looks way better to have illuminated door sills.

I have a 2015 GLA45 AMG, the same car with a hatch. It has dual-zone auto climate, rear camera, navigation, the sport mode exhaust plus upgraded seats. All these make for a better experience. And we added coilovers for even better handling with the same ride, that I find acceptable. Yes the DCT can be a pain, but if you put it in Sport or Manual (a part of the exhaust package - which this car doesn't have) the clutch engagement for the DCT gets better. We still love ours!

I drive a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Limited. Has way more luxury features than this. Trizone auto climate control, keyless entry/start, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency collision braking, backup camera with trajectory and cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled seats, etc. Even the rear seats are heated!

Is this REALLY a CLA 45? Or did the owner buy a used base model CLA and slap fake badges and fools people on Turo?
1. The door light projectors are aftermarket aliexpress parts.
2. The front brake caliper cover looks aftermarket.
3. The info screen is a base model version (unless MB really does give you base parts regardless of engine trim)
It doesn't seem weird to me. In a lot of countries in Europe, when you order a German car, you have to check a long list of options, the base models often come with the smallest wheels you could find, basic manual cloth seats, no AC, no backup camera, no parking sensors, no lane departure, no GPS, no cruise control, halogen headlights, no metallic paint,... So you could get a base model for 25kEUR, but if you want it well equipped you'll have to add 10kEUR of options, and another 10k for a decent engine. And it goes the same with supposedly high end models such as the MB AMG, BMW M or Audi S/RS, but with some sportier options being in the base model.
The amg model is supposed to have red seat belts. This one is fishy.

the amg package is all looks no go lol you pay for the 400hp engine and they charge huge for options my 2019 cla amg 45 was 54k to start 3k for recaro seats 5k for limited slip dynamic package .they just kill you with the $$$$$ options so you can have a plain jane amg 45 for 54 grand and it looks like a cla 250 for spent 75k and get a cla amg that looks like a true proformance car

In australia our cla45 has leather heated/cooled recaros, moon roof, and every option the amg c63 has.
The 250 Sport I drive has literally all the features Doug mentioned this 45 not having, the owner of this 45 must have been really boring because its such a badly optioned one.

I always felt like all Audi models have had the same shape and grille. Nothing changed over the past 20 years in terms of design. Same goes for bmw. I love the different curvy shapes that Mercedes’ experiments with here. Just my opinion though.

OMG!!! Doug, I adore your reviews. I'll be honest with you, I probably watch them at work more than I should, and at home I watch them at least a couple of times a week. I had been wondering when you were going to get around to reviewing the CLA class, but I was a little disappointed when I watched this video. I don't know why they gave you a 45 lacking so many options, but my 2015 CLA 250 (not even the AMG version) has all those options you mentioned and then some. I paid 36k for my CLA 250 in 2016 and it has dual climate control, heated seats, panoramic sunroof, key less go, illuminated star, AMG styling package, touch start, heck... I even had them throw in some free winter floor mats!! I got a very good deal since my CLA 250 was a Mercedes dealership loaner with only 4,500 miles. Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones? I'm actually kind of glad that I chose the 250 instead of the 45 because the difference in the price of the scheduled maintenance is noticeable. Less times at the dealership, more money in my pocket, I'm not complaining. I love my car and I'm in it for the long haul. Thank you very much for all that you do to bring joy to us car guys, but I had to be the one to step in and tell you not to judge the CLA class on a subpar rental that you were given. Peace brother!!!!

So someone bought a totally stripper version of the CLA45 and put it on Turo ... it happens, but I don't think its representative of the car itself. Browse around, most used CLA250s and 45s have all (or most) of the features -- sunroof, heated seats, dual-zone auto climate control, backup camera and even keyless-go. The sunroof option was somewhat expensive, but everything else was cheap to add and was often equipped with a single option (premium 1 iirc) package.
Yes it's crazy that none of those features came as standard, particularly on the CLA45 since it's so expensive, but ... they were options and they were commonly equipped. You can rag on Mercedes for getting people with tons of little options rather than doing these things as standard, but you make it sound as though none of these features were even available for the 2016 model year. They were. This was an owner that made a lot of bad decisions in his/her car buying process more than anything.
All that being said, I agree the CLA45 isn't worth the money. You're paying a ton extra over the CLA250 for a car that is 90% identical to the 250 and just has a (much) nicer engine. Just shows you what a difference it makes to start with a higher-end car if you're going to get an AMG version -- the c-class, for example, is clearly a nicer car, and the C43 and C63 are proportionately much nicer because of it.
The doug effect just dropped this cars value around 5-8% in the US. They should never made a backup camera optional in 2016. Its standard in a 12k nissan versa.
I offered Doug to take my 2017 CLA45 with carbon spoiler, heated seat, better interior/exterior, more HP, I didn’t get a reply. And he decided to do this one lol...

James Campagna ya that’s why CLA is one of the most successful launch for Mercedes. Older CLA before 2017 I would agree to certain extent but 2017 and after. The car is seen as a very good value to me. And yes everyone has their own opinions. Bought almost 3 years and still no regrets. For the money, it was so much worth it. There are down sides of course but I got a good price on it and it doesn’t depreciate as much as people think. Try KBB and compare to the Lexus LCF or RCF. This car is a stepping stone for younger buyers who sacrifice comfort for brand, technology, sporty, and performance. Name a new car in 2016-2017 that you think I should have gotten instead. I’ll explain why I didn’t get those vehicles. I did a lot of research on this and every car in the segment and this is by far the best one and fulfill my desire. Check my video, I made it look amazing. And again, this is just beginning. GT 63 S, E 63 S, or AMG GTR are all in my radar in the future. Mercedes did their marketing right with this car. This is why their new CLA/A class will be the first car that has the latest technology “Hey Mercedes” technology, etc before even the S class.

Crazy I just got a 2014 cla 45 AMG and every feature he complained wasn’t there. Is there on the 2014. Backup camera, heated seats, rear ac, dual zone ac, panoramic sunroof, built in navigation.. I wish I had the light up grill and emblem though 🔥
As a German I was always surprised at how Doug reviewed the options in German cars. Here it is well known that if you buy any domestic vehicle without options, you will get a metal box with a 50-90hp engine and a manual transmission. Audi for example treats cruise control (not adaptive, just regular old cruise) as an extra. - The result of that is that two German vehicles in Germany are almost never alike. I for example have a relatively loaded 2017 car that doesn't have a backup camera either and the reason for that is that the previous owner simply didn't check the corresponding box in the online configurator.
This is not all bad because I don't have to pay for some shit I don't care about. For example electronically adjusted seats are a feature I would never spend a single Euro on. Keyless Go on the other hand is something I would never want to miss.
Yep. There was a time where you can get manual windows on an S-Class if you felt like it. In America however, cars are optioned so much differently, especially luxury cars. Instead of being able to select individual options, most features are bundled up into separate packages. I think the German way is so much better.

CocoPlayer actually it’s 0-100 in closer to 14 seconds. Also speed isn’t always the answer, I’m sure that Merc will struggle to get to 100k miles while I’m at 122k and counting now
I have a story about this car.
When I was in HighSchool about 2 years ago I had a part time job at TurtleWax in the detail shop. I was assigned this exact car but in the color red. I got inside, started it up and said wow this thing sounds awesome! I put it in reverse tap the gas and IT LITERALLY TOOK OFF! I slammed the brakes... the car wouldn't move unless you hit the gas. So Im trying to maintain a slow speed. I get it in the shop and as im cleaning the inside im looking around just wondering why it looked so empty. Long stroy short. This car sucks when it comes to value. Go with an Audi instead. Everything Doug said was spot on.

Being that this a privately owned rental car, I'm willing to bet the owner skipped all the options to minimize the price, but got the AMG so he can rent it for the same as other, probably better-equipped AMG's in the area. Step 1: Minimize OTD price. Step 2: ??? Step 3: Profit!

This is THE worst possible car Doug could have reviewed. Very poor and base spec, car has been messed with (you can see from the missing logo on the engine cover and the 9$ Amazon spot lights on the door). The CLA’s got a refresh for 2019 and I really hope you review one of those, this review was a disservice to the CLA.
Yep! It even seems as a fake 45. Where is the stitched leather on the dashboard. And the seats. Those are from a normal version of the car, called "premium". The 45 has different seats.
And from what I know in the US they only sell it with automatic double zone climate control with the rear vents.

And the backup camera. Why isn't there? It is included in the "sport" called version (two steps lower than the 45). Same as the navigation system.

I genuinely believe this is a fake AMG. I have a CLA45 and this has nothing mine has: no bucket seats, no stitched dash, no grip pedals, no carbon fiber everything, different infotainment screen, and I have every feature he complained about not having.

I was one of the first to get one of these in Australia at the end of 2013. In Australia there only is one version, a fully optioned one. Every single option is included. All you do is choose your colour, wheel colour and seat belt colour. Mine was white, silver 19 inch multi spoke rims and red seat belts. I traded my MY12 STI for it and was the best thing I owned.

Glad to see your honest review. I have the CLA 250 4 Matic. I really love it it's the perfect size for me and has plenty of power for my need and very comfortable to drive. I really like how low they sit gives you good handling and a more sporty feel.
My wife's base model 2017 Toyota Corolla iM has dual zone climate control; however it does have only half the drive wheels and half the horsepower, but then again, it costs less than a third of what this merc costs, also has an extra pedal over the merc.
That extra pedal makes it all worth it

This particular CLA45 is absolutely emblematic of the fake baller life (sorry if no one uses that word anymore, but I'm old). No options? Check. Cheap-looking, ricer accoutrements (even if factory optioned)? Check. Putting it up on Turo? Check. Also wouldn't be shocked if the owner lives in some cheap apartment, too, and essentially lives paycheck to paycheck.
-pays- the maintenance cost. At least he can fart around in that car with that stupid-ass artificial exhaust notes.
Re the take off and throttle response. Thats not how they drive, so there is something wrong with that one. Its critically important that the engine and DCT box have all the firmware updates to latest. The factory shipped firmware was indeed shocking. Generally the dealers will update these during the Services. On that note, Servicing is the BAD point on the A45 / CLA45 / GLA45. Its SOOOO expensive. In the UK the service is about 800 UK pounds a go. So 1000 dollars. The ride quality issues were all fixed in the Facelift version. Sept 2015 onwards. You have a pre-facelift car in the video.

Heated and ventilated seats are luxury options. Want them but don't want to pay what the manufacturer is asking for them? Get a different car from a brand asking for less. You can't compare it to a windshield, which is an important safety feature, or door handles, which are pretty much required if your car has doors.

My 2013 A45 (hatch version of the CLA) has all of those options, including the AMG bucket seats, aero kit, exhaust and wheels which that one doesn't - all optional extras... including panaoramic roof, Distronic (adaptive cruise control) and Parktronic (parallel parks itself). Options mate!

I don't know about this CLA45 but generally Mercedes cars sold in Europe have much lower spec compared to the ones sold in the US.

I have a 2016 WRX Limited. I payed under 25K. It has a sunroof, heated seats, pockets on the back of the seats. I can't believe a 50K Mercedes doesn't come with more. Ridiculous!
