    As an American beans on toast sounds like something you'd come up with when you have nothing in the fridge or pantry but random ingredients. It doesn't sound disgusting but I wouldn't call it proper meal.

      The baked beans in the UK aren't like the ones in the USA. They are just in a tomato sauce.
      And, they are the British equivalent of US boxed mac and cheese - something quick, cheap and filling for when you haven't time to cook, or are on a limited budget.
      They don't count as a 'proper meal' - you wouldn't invite someone round to your house for beans on toast, just like you wouldn't invite them round for a plate of kraft mac and cheese.

    As a black american who grew up poor and was a broke college student, i would say beans on toast is like what we call “a struggle meal”. Basically it’s a meal you eat when you struggle to pay for everything and all you got in the kitchen is just items you just gotta make work. Not gonna lie, when i was younger, my mom use to make a concoction of pork and beans (heinz bean for you guys), american cheese, milk, hot dog slices cooked in a pot and pour it over toasted bread. And that would be our lunch and/or dinner. And i atill eat it now and again just from craving it time to time even though i have the money to eat really good meals.

      Its a "poor mans" kind of dish ( simple, cheap and easy) so I imagine it's just to add some extra texture and heartinesa to the beans to make it more filling.. Like adding crackers to a bowl of cheap chili. But yeah you aren't really concerned with how savory and delicious it is for sure though, lolJust that it fills you up.

    I’ve had beans on toast and it’s not the worst but I’m just like WHY? Like that’s not anything that would have ever crossed my mind to make,yet all of the UK are like “that’s a classic” 😊

      Only time I've had those types of beans (non sweet tomato version) on bread was with a hotdogs growing up. lol

    These British foods always strike me as maybe something related to WW II. In the early days of the war, 1939 -1941, Britain was severely affected by the German submarine blockade and the diet was very limited. Canned beans were likely something they didn't run out of. And Marmite--yeast--is a cheap source of quality protein. There are similar examples in other places. I attribute the Hawaiian addiction to Spam to the same phenomenon.

      Rationing lasted into the 50s , the national debt to the u.s. was only paid back in 2006 that's how long it took .

    I give credit to the kids in the US and UK who are trying these foods. It’s not often easy being adventurous with foods at that age.

      ​@@lovemesomeslippers you'd be surprised at how resistant some people are to trying new foods. Some don't even bother until their 20s and some almost never try anything new until they have to change their diet due to health.

    Living in the Southern US I know few people that eat baked beans straight out of the can. Most people serve them with grilled food and really season them up by adding onions and peppers and something to thicken the sauce and bake them again. Definitely a must at cookouts but not at breakfast or on toast.

    In the US typically 'pickle' without any qualifications is a sour possibly slightly salty Cucumber pickle. We have bread & butter pickles which are usually cut into thin round slices and has a slightly sweet and sour flavor. GHERKINS though are almost always small whole Cucumbers pickled in a very sweet brine.

    Mexicans love beans too but we eat it on a tortilla or in a torta. It usually isn’t canned beans though.

    People in the US have been eating "cheese on toast" for years. I used to it eat as a kid, and always just called it "cheese toast". Especially good if you put a Kraft Single (American cheese slice) on the bread and cook it in a toaster oven The cheese slice puffs up (almost inflates) and gets crispy on the outside, and liquidy under that crispy outside. .... Grilled cheese sandwich is pretty much the same thing.

      I grew up eating cheese toast as well. I loved when the cheese puffed up, and when it was crispy on the outside. I think I'm going to head to the kitchen to make some. 😋

    Never had baked beans (like sweet baked beans) on toast, but cowboy beans (like ranch style beans) on Texas Toast is something we do regularly when we cook out and I've had the leftovers on a breakfast plate the following day with eggs. Great stuff, so I could see this being good. The cheese toast is also something I make (but not for breakfast) and it really is just an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich of sorts, but I put hot sauce on mine usually.

    Gherkins are tiny sweet pickles here. Then there are larger regular sized sweet pickles. Then there are bread and butter pickles (only in chips). Then there are dills. Sweet and dill can come whole, sliced, or chipped. They can also come as relish, which is what we would call your Branston. Restaurant burgers only come with chipped dills.

    The cheese on toast is very similar to grilled cheese. My Grandma used to make her own pickles using a lime brine. Those lime pickles were perfect with grilled cheese

    Tea with milk always made me hesitate, but after that first sip I was completely sold and never looked back. The flavor is something else entirely, so soothing.

      The key is getting the right type of beans! Where I live currently only Safeway sells them, but you can get them easily online. Totally different taste! It’s light and tomato based.

    Beans on toast really became popular during hard times or due to war when meat became costly to ordinary citizen or it was ration due to wartime conditions even for the British during WW-1 and 2 and during depressions in the 1800's and the 1900's.

    I've had Bangers&Mash while traveling and a stop in London (enjoyed it - feel most Americans would). I haven't had the opportunity to have Toad-in-the-Hole, but it looks good. We have a dish called Pigs-in-a-Blanket I suspect you'd enjoy (sausage rolled in croissant with a white sauce "gravy" made from the sausage grease). We tend to like a lot of sausage type foods. The video seemed to focus on quick foods. We sometimes use similar items for quick things like basic sandwich items. You probably have access to the same appliances (Panini maker (which can also be used to make quick Cheese sandwiches), breakfast sandwich maker (takes an egg in one section and Canadian bacon or ham in another section - cooks it together. Top with bun of choice). Many things we eat are not specific to either the U.S. or the UK.

    Not to knock British comfort food, but I don't think ANYONE ever says to themselves, "I can't wait to get to Britain, to try that fine British cuisine." That being said I would try all of these things just to see if I liked it. I am genuinely curious about marmite and also the Branston pickle spread on cheese bread. Of course I would like to see how Heinz baked beans on toast would taste as well, and wonder what Brown Sauce, (HP Sauce), tastes like as well.

    Actually, in my area of the US (Upstate New York), what you would call, "cottage pie" is a very familiar, and often served, dish. We call it, "shepherd's pie" (even though shepherd's pie is technically made with lamb), it's kind of catch-all. Lamb isn't isn't as popular here as it is in the UK, so we make it with beef. The primary ingredients are: beef (usually spiced with salt, pepper, sage, onions, garlic,...), corn, mashed potatoes, and cheese.

      As an American who loves to eat lamb it always makes me angry that we misuse the Shepards Pie name. If I see it on a menu here and it is really beef, I know it is an inferior place and the food is not authentic (do you hear me 'Irish' Pubs?). What would be the problem to properly label it Cottage Pie? Most Americans know shepards flocks arent cows. It is as irritating as a 'German' restaurant that serves German Chocolate cake for a desert. It makes Americans look stupid to the rest of the world, and rightly so.

      True , but in the middle ages spices used a lot in cooking, rationing came in during the war and food was then just for sustainability, they would use minimal for each household it was all part of the war effort .

    My favorite breakfast is one you would like. Toast bread. Fry one egg and place on bread. Fry one slice of ham and place in egg. Top ham with slice of cheese. Egg, ham, & cheese sandwich. To make it fancy I add leafy greens, sliced onions, and seasoning. Some would add tomato and or pickles.

    Now I just have more questions.
    1. Which type of pickle is used in British “cheese-and-pickle” sandwiches?
    2. Is tuna salad a thing in the UK? There are many options for what to include with the tuna and the mayo. My absolute must-have ingredient, though, is sweet pickle (gherkin) relish. Yum!
    3. They didn’t really talk about what was in the jarred British pickle. I’m married to an Indian, so am aware of a range of foods (mainly fruits, though not always) in a blend of chili and oil. I enjoy sweet lime pickle, but find most others too oily to be enjoyable. What type(s) of things are found in British pickle? In the U.S. the common ingredient for “pickled XYZ” is vinegar. What’s the common theme/ingredient in British pickle?
    4. In the U.S. both sweet and dill pickles (both made with cucumbers) are popular. Typically “a pickle” eaten on its own (often as a side served with a sandwich) will be a dill pickle. Sweet pickles are usually eaten sliced or as sweet pickle relish. All of the above are good on burgers or in sandwiches. How are “gherkins” served in the UK?

      Branston pickle contains carrot, swede (rutabaga), onion and cauliflower and the sauce is made using vinegar, tomato, apple and spices.

    I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each Christmas, there is a "Dickens Festival" just outside of San Francisco. A large arena (the "Cow Palace") that is often used for rodeos and other events hosts this festival. It is transformed into Victorian-era London. While the dancing, shows and shops are pretty cool, I always go for the FOOD. They have all kinds of foods that are straight out of the UK. One booth sells "bangers and mash," another sells more authentic "fish and chips," another sells different savory pies and there is even one where you can buy beans on toast. I've tried quite a bit of the more nostalgic dishes. It's interesting that some of it -- including the weirder options -- is surprisingly good.

      Because of Jean and 'As Time Goes By' I ordered the British Relish to make our own Pickle & Cheese sandwiches. I was surprised that it tasted sweet. It looked and tasted like our Pickle relish. I like Pickle Relish and I like cheese sandwiches, but the blend was not to my taste. Of course, as are American Pickle choices, I would bellieve the UK has at least as much variety as here when it comes to pickles. By definition a gherkin is just a small cucumber (1-5") pickled in some brine.

    I love cottage pie, most Americans mistakenly call it shepherds pie though. Jacket potatoes are actually a very common American food, but we call them baked potatoes

    Baked beans for breakfast - absolutely not. Baked beans most often are served at cookouts as a side dish w/hot dogs or hamburgers. Baked beans cooked w/onions & peppers, with mustard and sliced hot dogs is called 'beenie weenies'. A fine cookout standard, but just as good on a cold night in the fall. Cheese on toast is a grilled cheese sandwich [it's not served open faced]. I tried Marmite in Australia ............. still a flashback I can't get over.

    I practically live off of various forms of cheese on toast (to include grilled cheese). The quality of both the bread and cheese I use has improved over the years though.

    Gerkens are a type of pickle found on every grocery store shelf. I put them in my egg or tuna salad, which I sometimes eat on bread as a sandwich. For ease, most people who use pickle in their salad now use relish instead of taking the time to cut it up. I would not mess up my grilled cheese sandwich [comfort food] by adding pickle to it.

    The funny thing about Heinz Beans (which is what they are known as now in the UK, because Heinz Baked Beans was a "mouthful" apparently lol) is that they are an American company (or was, not sure when they merged in 2015 if they are still American owned or not). So you had Beans on toast becoming a staple British food, using American beans :D

      Heinz has always used a slightly different recipe for the US VS British. Our US is sweet and theirs is not.

      Heinz is still American. They just changed the recipe to non sweet for British market and put it in tomato sauce. We have the non sweet tomato versions too. I grew up eating those as well in California. Van Camps Pork n Beans, Price Chopper and a Kroger brand. Just get the one that says "in tomato sauce"

    I tried this after watching 'As Time Goes By' because they often mention this, Pickle sandwiches and Custard Tarts. BRITISH Hines beans are very bland and not as sweet as ours. I think the lack of the flavors I am used to and how soggy the toast got is why I didn't like it. Unfortunately I did not find it comforting as much as a survival food. Pickle sandwiches were just edible ( and I love pickles), but the Custard Tarts were sublime and I make them several times a year. Still trying to find a way to make a Cucumber sandwich that has some flavor.

    I love beans on toast. I don’t like marmite, brown sauce (HP) or even what we have here A1 sauce. I also love pork pies, pasties, sausage rolls and a full English breakfast with black pudding and fried bread. Yes, I was raised in an all English and Irish home here in the US. Plus I lived in England for a year.

    Where I'm from in the U.S., we have pork and beans. Usually it's just canned baked beans and hot dogs. You chop up the hot dogs and cook them with the beans. I personally add a dash of hot sauce and BBQ sauce when warming them. Then you serve it over lightly toasted bread. Usually it's lunch or dinner. It's never breakfast. It's most common when camping.

    The beans on toast doesn't seem like anything groundbreaking. In the US, most people eat toast, and a lot of older people have eaten canned beans (the Heinz beans look like pork and beans.... they're called that, but they barely have any pork in them). So it's not hard to imagine the 2 together. It's not like PB & J, where people think it's gonna be gross and it works (because it's sweet and salty). I'd eat beans on toast, but TBH it sounds kinda boring.

    beans and toast looks like a hobo meal or something I got from the soup kitchen. a good dill pickle with grilled cheese is good , just not on the sandwich.

    I’ve eaten Marmite with a spoon. Admittedly, not a particularly large spoon, and rarely multiple spoonfuls.

    I am a 63yo who grew up in Michigan in the 1960's and several of these items were regulars on our table, especially HP sauce which is still a favorite of mine on beef or steak. I always have some Marmite in the cabinet and some Heinz beans. Must be my English ancestry although my first American ancestor came to Virginia in 1680 and for a time was the English colonial tax collector for the colony.

    I don't have an issue with beans on toast; I could not eat them for breakfast. I can only eat them in small amounts as a side dish with other food during lunch or dinner. My stomach would be a mess.

    I think cottage pie is the one with beef but here in America most of us call it Shepards pie. Either way I love it. I once ordered Yorkshire pie from a British resturaunt here in NYC and loved it though was too small! I'd actually love to try bangers and mash sauce and mashed potatoes what's not to like?! Now beans and toast wouldn't that make the toast soggy? I never understood why British people like it. I learned about it from Coronation Street.

    I like the switch in native cuisine 😊. One day when the world is sane again I would love to visit all part's of the UK and Ireland. Scotland is awesome. Jersey is very interesting. I looked it up on a map.

    I'm perplexed that gherkins are an alien thing to the teens, because gherkins are in the pickle section of any large grocery store in the U.S.
    Though our gherkins are sweet pickles, and wouldn't bring the same reaction as they had to the Branston Pickle.

    Makes sense about some things. A person can like something on its own but only at that. And some foods that are tasty in many situations just don’t go together.
    That said, Marmite is a fascinating study into the physical differences between us all.

    As an American, I am a pretty big fan of marmate toast and Ribena. Beans on toast is OK, but it's kind of bland straight out of the can. I usually make my beans on toast with some smoked paprika or curry powder.

    As an American that has had beans on toast - I hated it... but I think that is because I grew up with homemade baked beans. It's the canned beans. They are awful.

    I spent a week in Dublin and our Hotel served breakfast. I was surprised to see baked beans on a breakfast buffet but I ate them. No one told me they were supposed to be on toast so now I fell like I missed out on trying something different.

    Beans looked good on toast. If it had a fried egg or some cheese, I think it would be an excellent breakfast dish. I'm Salvadoran and normally, beans with rice and some queso fresco and avocado, basic lunch.

    It is all abou preference. I am not use to beans on toast. I usually think of as a side dish with maybe a hot do or a hamburger.
