Shifting a Manual Transaxle; How it Works.

  • Not the best video, nor the worst video.
    Someone on Maine Mud Mowers ( / mainemudmowers ) was looking at converting from Hydro (lame) to a Manual (awesome) and was curious as to how to shift. Seeing as how this was one of my big questions when I started modding (was a huge thing when I started), I figured I would try my hand at making a video on it and explaining how it works. Its not the best, but I tried.
    Hope you enjoy!

    This is SUPER helpful thank you so much! I am buying an old rider like this and I've never driven one before, let alone a manual car. Thank you so much

    This is really helpful, I’m converting a huskee hydrostatic into a transaxle

    According to what I found in the MTD 144-918-000 owner's manual:
    GEAR SHIFT LEVER
    The transaxle has four forward gears plus neutral and reverse. Do not shift through the gears on the transaxle as you would in an automobile. Pre-select the gear appropriate for the job you are doing.
    You must depress the clutch and come to a complete stop before shifting gears.
    SPEED CONTROL SELECTOR
    The speed control selector is used with the gear shift lever to obtain your 16 forward speeds. The farther forward you move the selector, the faster you travel across the ground. To move the speed control selector, depress the thumb button on the end of the lever and move the selector in either direction. You do not have to de-clutch or stop the tractor; however, the tractor engine should be running.

      ClassicTVMan1981X The only thing that will happen from shifting while moving is accelerated shift key wear, which even then takes a while. Perfectly safe to shift while moving.

    all the mowers I ever drove have manual transmission.
    its EZ! step 1. Push in Brake/Clutch petal | step 2. shift to desired gear | step 3.let out Brake/Clutch petal slowly.

    Very interesting and helpful when getting into older mowers with no manual (repair or operating that is). Just finished building a clutch disc for an '86 Toro with a 5 speed Peerless and now that I have it moving, first and second gear felt like the only ones that work right; it wasn't anything like a manual transmission car where speed is attained progressively. This one wanted one gear for flat ground, and a different one for climbing. We have a fairly significant slope to our back yard, and the mower won't climb it in anything except first, which is like walking with a toolbox in your hands slow. I was left wondering if this was a designed feature on the transmission, or if I'll be attempting to crack the tranny open for the next phase of restoration. It doesn't feel like it has any brakes whatsoever with the 'brake' pedal, but sticking the clutch in to down change for the hill (or anywhere else) certainly seems to have enough resistance in the belts that it slows down well enough that way. It was a real trip learning to drive it as _It_ wanted to be driven today, anticipating where I'd need to ride the clutch pedal so I could drop into first and for turning/stopping!

    Hi there,
    I just bought my first manual shift (always drove Hydro) and took it out for a quick ride and almost shit myself as it freewheeled it all the way down my drive and luckily the uphill is what helped it stop or deaccelerate.
    It has 5 speed range and I put in in 5th gear and gave her and shortly realized depressing the brake/clutch pedal only made it roll faster, how do you slow it down when you are on paved road going downhill? Also, let's say you're up on a steep hill trying to mow but you need to stop and shift gears, how do you keep the tractor from rolling while you change gears? E-brake does not really stop it and depressing clutch will send it rolling down...
    Thanks :)

    I have a question could u eliminate the clutch by Using a centrifugal clutch . So u can just let off gas to shift ? Or does the transaxle have a built in clutch ?

    • @KeystoneMotorsports
      @KeystoneMotorsports  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could, but you would lose all engine braking power so you would need heavier duty brakes so you dont lose control when decelerating or going down hills. I would very much not recommend doing that.

      Hydro still should have a mechanical clutch in the driveline.

    The craftsman 6speed transaxle will shift without clutch as long as you float gears. Just rev up throttle and let it whine down

    You don’t have to do this if you aren’t aware you can shift without clutch but racing mowers you’ll want to

    • @KeystoneMotorsports
      @KeystoneMotorsports  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's easier to shift if you clutch as it removes the input load.

    • @Leboobs22

      Remove the brake pads on the clutch and hook up some front brakes via any method; put a small pulley on the axle and boom; you have a drifting race mower
