I am not a fan of Mr Beast and I agree with most of your critisms. However, when we´re always enveloped by gloom and doom, some of these stories can feel nice, like a great way to escape. Which is what bothers me about the criticism, you assume that even the adults who defend him are just confused or don´t understand the systemic problems. Maybe they´re just trying to escape from the horrible distopic world we live in, in which even when you try to change things it doesn´t work. So seeing someone at least do something nice, should feel at least a bit nice. I can be a bit dishearting for everything to be critized and therefore nothing can be at least a bit good, everything has to be tainted by "evil/bad" things. Also obviously as an American youtuber, you didn´t include other countries but that might be beyond the scope of your video. I guess I feel this way, because sometimes informing about an issue isn´t enough to change it.

I’m an ophthalmic technician so a huge part of my job on a daily basis is working with cataract patients and educating them about cataracts. There are a few things that were odd to be in the mr beast video. 1) The phrasing of the title and concept in general. Cataracts do not make people blind. They DO impair vision to varying degrees depending on the person and how long they’ve had the cataract. It’s VERY rare for cataracts to completely obstruct vision. For reference, 20/20 is “normal” vision, and majority of people who I do exams on are seeing about 20/40-20/80 with cataracts that have been there for years. Furthermore, most of the time, they are able to correct this visual disturbance with glasses or contacts. It may not completely correct to 20/20 but MOST people are still using correction to see on a daily basis. For reference, 20/200 or worse qualifies a person as “legally blind”. I understand that any disruption to vision is frustrating and I agree, it was a very nice gesture and I’m sure it helped a lot of people. I also agree that we need universal healthcare and anyone should be able to have the procedure if needed. The problem is how he’s selling it, he’s making it seem like these people are truly blind and can’t see anything, when that’s just not statistically possible in 1,000 people with cataracts. I should mention idk if maybe to qualify for his video you needed to be seeing at a certain point or something along those lines which would make sense. 2) there is absolutely no way that right after the surgery they were seeing perfectly. They will see better than before surgery, but it has to heal a bit before the vision is clear. Our clinic sees the patients the next day for a postop and majority of patients say it wasn’t until a few hours later or the next morning that they noticed a clear difference. So I think that the reactions are either forced or he just chose the few people who happened to notice a big difference immediately after. 3) This may be different in different states, but in my state our malpractice insurance won’t let us operate in both eyes on the same day because if, for some rare but possible reason, the surgery didn’t take it caused complications, both eyes won’t be affected only one would be. We even see the patients back about a week after to check and make sure the eye is doing well to give us the ok to do the second eye. To my knowledge, most other clinics operate the same way. And in conclusion lol, I agree I think posting your good deeds is just tacky, he could have totally made an Instagram post or something if he wanted his fans to know, but the performance of the whole video is just off putting for me.

Thank you so much for this! I was also wondering about complications in general, I'm not an expert but google tells me there's a somewhat significant percentage of patients that experience posterior capsule opacification? That's something that would develop after a while, right? So what would that mean in this context, more surgery? additional treatments? and what happens if it goes untreated? is it "just" that patients lose their vision again or would there be more significant consequences?

It’s often treated with a YAG laser procedure, which is different from a cataract surgery and much less invasive. if PCO is left untreated, for the most part the patient just is stuck with another cataract from what I remember learning. There are plenty of other complications that can occur from cataract surgery that need to be monitored for by a qualified practitioner.

We wouldn't *need* people like Mr. Beast if we didn't live in a failing society that didn't take care of its most vulnerable while letting billionaires and huge companies exploit people. It's great that Mr. Beast is helping people, but it's like when you read those "feel-good" stories that are actually really depressing once you think about it.
Like no, it's actually really not heartwarming that a 9-year-old girl had to organize a huge bake sale to pay for her brother's wheelchair or that a group of employees banded together and donated all of their sick leave to their coworker who has cancer. Those people should be getting taken care of but they're not because we live in a dystopia.

Starvation is an actual issue to thousands of people around the globe and is a very big issue. But instead of spending the resources to move the food that we produce which is enough to feed more than 1 Earth, we instead just spend money to make sure we produce more food. Saying starvation isn't even an issue, is stupid, because it is. @@triplea7536 You forgot that your original point is that it enriches everyone, and since many people in Africa, and all over the world do starve, have hundreds of financial issues, some not even being to support themselves financially, capitalism world broad does not enrich everyone. But let's continue, think of why the US is so rich. 1. Very good geography protected on both sides by oceans and had good relationships with its neighbors. Meanwhile in the US you have every possible climate and terrain, from swamps to mountains, to deserts and artic. The US is also extremely rich in resources it has abundant oil, gold, iron, and silver. Also the reason why food is so cheap and abundant in a western country like the US is because the US produces a massive surplus of food, the US produces enough food to feed itself 2 times over, and since there's not a high demand in food it becomes very cheap. But then you realize that some individuals can't even afford this cheap food, its not impressive if a country that produces enough food to feed itself twice can't fully feed its entire population. Also not everyone has a house or a decent job, so assuming everyone is enriched by capitalism is an inherently flawed idea. Again my point is that not everyone is enriched by the system, which you seem to think everyone is. Although I only used the US as an example, most western countries do have people in it who starve, or find it very hard to get a good job. Massive corporations like Amazon do abuse their workers human rights, there is even evidence that Amazon uses child and sweat shop labor, would you call that enriching to those sweat shop workers and children? No. Capitalism does not inherently enrich everyone in existence or everyone in a western country. Again my point is the system does not enrich everyone like you believe it to.

Thanks for this. I'm not blind, but have a chronic eye condition which along the way has given me cataracts, and I have had them removed (thankfully I'm in Europe so this didn't cost me financially). When I saw the video, I assumed he would be helping people in countries where they have less medical infrastructure in place, maybe in very rural areas, like Médecins Sans Frontières do, but never did I think it'd be in the US. Honestly that's incredibly dystopian, that in the developed world you would need to have your medically necessary surgery funded by a youtuber for views online, with no privacy to deal with the stress of the operation itself or the potential complications.
Am I happy he helped people? Oh very much so, yes. Am I happy they had to turn to him for help because they had no other way? God no. That is frankly disturbing. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with this, US folk. You deserve better.
Side note, after cataract removal, glaucoma is a common long-term complication. One that I have, in one of my eyes. Cataracts are the world's leading cause of blindness, and glaucoma is number two on that list. I wonder if he will be quite as happy to fund their boring, non-attention-grabbing long-term treatment for them to keep their regained vision, in the form of prescription eyedrops, laser procedures, and potential other eye surgeries. Somehow I doubt it.

But it's just a band-aid (and a very limited one, at that) which won't help anyone (not even the person who's been granted the money) in the long run. A lot of homeless people struggle with their health, mental health, substance abuse (usually due to lack of accessibility to mental health treatment) etc. A singular monetary "gift" on its own won't solve any real issue at its root to ensure the person comes out of that situation. If he has so much money to spare, why not help local homeless shelters or public food banks etc., heck even creating new shelters, funding recovery centres, or lobbying for accessibility to public health and mental health (lobbying which costs a lot of money as well!). The last thing you mentioned really got me thinking about how this compares to what the Green Brothers do for charity. John and Hank Green have multiple companies that they’ve started, but both survive off the royalties from their books and their main company Complexly. Their other companies such as TH-cam Monetization, Crash Course, Awesome Socks and Awesome Coffee, those profits go to charity and they make sure to remind people constantly to support their missions to decrease child mortality in Sierra Leone (among many other large charity projects over the years). I believe John once said something along the lines of “I could be a lot richer, but I can survive off less, and make the world a better place” After just coming off the Project for Awesome charity livestream that raised 2.8 million dollars for charity this weekend, content like Mr. Beast videos make me feel sad. So much exploitation and guilt tripping to make sure content reaches certain numbers. It’s a disappointing outlook on life.

I used to work in nonprofit marketing and I really appreciate the nuance of this video. There's a constant balance between wanting to move people to donate more vs. not wanting to misrepresent or exploit the people being helped. We can track that data really closely--particularly heart-wrenching stories, images of someone receiving a specific item the donation is paying for, or disasters that are getting a lot of press motivate people to donate significantly more than, say, images of recipients just smiling (this is true even for people who are already long-time or high-value donors). When you know you can feed 1000 more people with a dramatic photo, it becomes really difficult to choose a plain one, because the consequence of that choice is on your mind.
That being said I do think it's important to have nuanced discussions like these, especially since Mr. Beast has stated that this is a content strategy, and especially since his net worth is growing exponentially. And I'm not saying that's a bad thing--I would love for every 'hey you'll never believe this' TH-camr to be leaving a positive impact. But as you said, two things can be true at once: he can be doing good for strangers and also profiting in a way he wouldn't on a different video. He can make a hugely positive individual impact while also unintentionally spotlighting some systemic failures that deserve discussion. I think it's a mistake for both Mr. Beast and his fans to equate any criticism of the system or discussions on ethics to be an attack on him.
As someone who's worked extensively with nonprofits and is on the board of one now, I think one of the biggest things that gets overlooked is staying power: how impactful your donation is after you're done, and how it ripples outward to those you didn't impact directly. The lowest on the scale might be giving someone a sum of money. This is a great thing to do, but once the money is spent, it's spent. It also doesn't usually grow since people receiving it probably don't have the means/knowhow to make it last longer: they have immediate needs that the money goes toward. These surgeries are a middle-of-the-road option: they only impact the people receiving surgery, but their lives are positively impacted even after Mr. Beast leaves. A way he could add more staying power to this might be:
    - setting up a fund whose interest pays for additional surgeries every year
    - harnessing his audience to start a petition for these surgeries to be free or at least covered more broadly by insurance, etc.
    - connecting viewers with resources for probono surgery in their area or funding options if someone they know is in need of it
    - linking to related charities and encouraging his followers to donate
    - giving the people in his video the option of giving their 'prize' (ex: $10k) away so that others can receive the surgery, and when they do so giving money to both the recipient and the other party
    - etc.
These are off the top of my head, I'm sure there are many others.
The last category of staying power is when the ripples of a donation become far greater than the donation itself. Microloan organizations are a great example of this. There's a story from Kiva about a couple who got a loan to expand their farm. Then the next year they had extra yield so they got a loan to open a small restaurant in town, where they use items grown at their farm in their cooking. Then they had trouble getting all the produce back and forth so they got a loan for a bike to transport it, and now the husband runs a part-time bike taxi service. Not only were all of these loans (rather than donations), so they were repaid and that money can now be used to help other people, but this financial helping hand also provided benefit to the local community, who now have a restaurant with farm-to-table offerings, and a low-cost bike taxi that serves the entire town. I'd love to see Charity Influencers delving into this third category more often, especially since microloans are something even a young viewer could participate in and help alleviate suffering in the world.
Also lastly: while the 'it would be good ROI' might seem cold or contradictory, I think it's actually helpful. People who care about humanity won't care about the cost of doing what's right; they just want to do it. But unfortunately there's a large section of the population who are constantly asking 'what's in it for me' (as that creepy poll showed). It can be powerful to point out to those people that it actually does benefit them to help others. Sometimes that fact is the only thing that gets a key, life-altering or life-saving change or fund or policy approved. In an ideal world that thinking wouldn't even be a factor, but unfortunately it is. And if 'it would actually save you money' is the thing that makes this surgery available to everyone in the US, I don't mind it being said.

The comment about how the government would benefit financially from helping blind people could be a good point to note that even a society that does typically value money above all is so ableist that we would rather push disabled people to the side than notice the “objective” points. I’d compare it to pointing out that the bible isn’t literally homophobic in an attempt to argue that lgbtq people deserve to live. All the "mega TH-camrs" make me feel weird no matter what. The fact that they have to go bigger and bigger ("selflessness" doesn't seem to make them immune to this), seems to me like a recipe for it some time (or maybe it already has) to go too far. Because in the end, it's about views. If people won't watch it, Mr. Beast won't do it. This very fact is why I call BS on his supposed selflessness. There are so many ways people like him can act on purely humanistic desires to serve the world that don't involve an audience.

Why are so many people complaining that MrBeast is doing charitable work and helping so many people, like yes he profits off of his videos but then he puts that money back in the next videos where he helps even more people, that’s how investment works. No one's arguing that he's not helping people, but don't pretend that you're doing all this at no benefit to you.

As a Black woman who is visually impaired, I find that he did help those individuals. What I have an issue with is the way the video portrays this falsehood of blindness being cured. Yes, he may not have said it but the context that people will take will nonetheless. I feel that race and privilege cannot be denied here either. Mr. Beast is very rich and his privilege allows him to be wealthy. I understand he helped people but if you have to be public about helping people, then that will come across as not authentic. I have received some not so nice comments about Mr. Beast. Some telling me I'm mad that he hasn't solved world hunger. It's not about that. It's about the privilege that Mt. Beast has to wealthy. Plus he's a WHITE wealthy guy. Meaning most Black individuals wouldn't be able to reach his status without some heavy fighting to get there. I don't have an issue with Mr. Beast as a person. What I have an issue with is the click bait, presentation and privilege.

If you watched his old videos, which you obviously did not and only got your information from Tiffany in the video, you would have observed that Mr. Beast did not start with a lot of money, but he instead worked harder than other youtubers and took a fair share of risks to get to where he is. I don't think Tiffany understands MrBeast very well, and a lot of these criticisms have underlying assumptions. For example - the idea that philanthropy and helping others must always be selfless. While morally, I'm sure most of us would prefer that or preach that, in practice, very few of us actually practice pure charity. I don't know a single person in my personal life that would give away significant parts of their personal assets to charity. If pure charity were something appealing on its own, things like fundraisers wouldn't be invented. Why do we need to get a prize in order to help out those in need? It's because most people are self-interested, and to hold billionaires, world leaders or anyone else on a pedestal is a bigger problem - that's when you truly create a hero complex b/c nothing is ever good enough. The irony is she's criticizing Jimmy for pretending to be a hero and saying we don't need a hero, while holding him to standards that would actually make him a hero. So is the real problem that we don't need a hero, or that he's just not living up to your exacting standards of what a true hero looks like?
Anyone in a western country is immensely wealthy compared to the rest of the world. How many of us are giving away our personal assets to help solve hunger or poverty? We can certainly afford to. It's really easy to criticize - corporations, the system, billionaires, other people etc. MrBeast is on another level of wealth, but if you want to start criticizing, BE the change you want to see. Instead of asking for patrons for your videos, give that money to charity.

She always found MrBeasts videos exploitative as she realises the not so much embarrassment of your struggles being shared but the all around lack of boundaries and privacy for the people in his videos. Whilst you don't "have" to appear on video and join in with the videos, the overall condition of getting help means having your struggles broadcasted to the world is a real problem, and i think people move to defending MrBeast so fast without realising the exploitative nature of his and many other youtubers charity work.
