@MrSapphire The reason Ike did so much damage, was that the hurricane-force winds were spread out almost the entire width of the storm, which was itself incredibly huge. Even the strongest hurricanes, Andrew included, had the highest winds in a rather small area near the eyewall.
Riding Hurricanes since 1955.............the Storm was a blast. The next night was very hot and humid with no electricity, like back in the pioneer days. 12 miles from the coast.
My dad stayed behind because he was fire department and drove the truck I drive now in the storm surge and flooding, using his ham radio gear as mobile communications. That truck also survived flooding in Harvey.
Believe it or not but we don't get that many hurricanes, this was the last one before Harvey hit, that was a total of 9 years. The only other times we get "hit" by hurricanes are just the tail fins of what hits Louisiana. Like issac, Rita, and Katrina.
Houston rarely sees hurricanes. Usually we get hit by tropical storms and rain making storms since were a hot spot for moisture to stay healthy. But ike was our last direct hit we took.
Plus because it was so big those winds that were "just" a category 2 even though it was 1 mph shy of being a category 3 lasted forever. They can classify it not as a major hurricane, but its size caused such a storm surge that made it the third costliest hurricane ever. It was the second until Sandy. I emailed the NHC and told them they needed to rethink their classification on what was a major hurricane.
Damn I was in clear lake in the meadowgreen nieghborhood with family and I was outside during ike with the rain drilling and wind so strong and the street lights off so it was dark
i had much worse I had a badder herricane once it blew my house and killed one of my cousin's his name is Hinnery be died i had to live with my brother it happened 2 days ago it was scary
i think i stayed in my house in ike dont no but i did i was mad at ma mama and daddy cause they didnt put ma trampoline then next thing you no i was looking in the outside window and saw ma trampoline flying in the air!!!lol ikr!!!first i thought it was an tre lol!!!then the next day it was in my nice neigbors yard!!lol
I remember when I was in the Navy, I received orders to go to Galveston to do hurricane relief after Hurricane Ike. We spent a month handing out bottled water and supplies to the locals. I will never forget all the dead farm animals and people's property floating in the harbor we pulled into. This video doesn't do justice in terms of the destructive power of hurricanes!
True! it was like pioneer days. Our whole neighborhood was out for 2 weeks. We all met at different backyards taking turns grilling food and sharing water.
A bit hit me in kentucky it was wonderful but horrible at the sametime. I rode my bike without pettling it was pretty fun. But it knocked out our power for like 3 days. But not long after that we had an icestorm which knocked our power out for like a week. But outside during the icestorm was horrifing. *crack* *icesickles falling* *BOOM* and every crack you just waited and hoped that the branch would'nt hit your house. It was almost impossible to sleep.
@BandiClan haha i know what you mean! *twitch- "sss!" yikes! poor weather man... "i want you to imagine being out in that and maybe... being hit with a piece of debris" LOL
Oh lord, I remember this hurricane, definitely not as bad as Harvey. Harvey would have killed Ike. But I got to thank Ike, if it didn't hit us, we would have never gotten our roof fixed, that would have left our house in a lot of damage from Harvey, so thanks Ike.
They talked about Ike on the national news for like a day after it hit even though it was the largest north Atlantic storm in recorded history. With Katrina and now Sandy they will report on it for weeks on end. Ike destroyed much of Galveston and all of the Bolivar Peninsula. 100s were killed and it got little media coverage with the exception of the local media that reported none stop for several weeks.

It’s unbelievable that one homeless man, who has lived on the beach for many years, survived this hanging on to a tree in Galveston!
This looks very scary, everybody had to mandatory evacuate.
hurricane ike was my birthday present for that year
I was born on the 10th when this was happening
Mine too

@@indigolights365 1983 Hurricane Alicia unleashed fury in Houston, the eye passed near downtown. Category 3. 25 years before Ike came along.
and this was only cat 2. Imagine if it was a major hurricane.
storm surge was near cat 5
Cat.4
It was 1 mph shy of cat3 but the storm tide was that of a cat 5

greatest eyewall yet. Hermine is a sorry excuse for a tropical storm xD
True! it was like pioneer days. Our whole neighborhood was out for 2 weeks. We all met at different backyards taking turns grilling food and sharing water.
Ike was 1mph less than a major cat 3
i remember going through the eye of ike in baytown... truly hell on earth
Mother Nature will not always be kind to us and we have to understand this. Galveston and much of Houston is ready again for another "Ike".
Harvey fucked us worse than Ike!!
