That was my reaction, too. I'd never before seen an interview with RS, only read one or two in magazines, and I was pleasantly surprised. Such great perspective as a human being with great insight to all he's been doing, even when he was just 20 years old and singing "Boys Don't Cry" and not ashamed to admit he grew up listening to music like Ray Charles at home in beautiful Crawley.
Same for me. This was the first interview of his I'd ever seen and was thoroughly pleased to know that Robert is even cooler than I imagined he would be.
I really like his voice, it's just such a pleasant English accent, not too posh, not too simple, just really relatable. It's quite calming and endearing.
Down with all royals. Fuck you and your “superior” bloodline. I know this is a bit of a tangent but an American comedian I love named Doug Stanhope does some great bits about this topic. “Stop holding on to dead people’s baggage”.
I saw the Cure in Austin in 2008 and the set went on for two hours and I was thinking man, people are going to start passing out. Longest set by any band I have ever seen and really could not grasp why it went on for so long in a crowded theatre. Then I saw another interview with Robert Smith where he said he saved up money to go see the Rolling Stones in 1977 in London. He went by himself, took the train to London, but the set only lasted 45 minutes. He was utterly disappointed and saddened that after all the sacrifice he only got to see a 45 minute show. He vowed if her ever traveled to far away places as a musician, he would not do what happened to him to fans.
+Kyle M Saw The Cure in Austin last night - set went on for 2 1/2 hours!!!! I couldn't believe these old guys - hey I'm 55 so I can say that - could play that long!!! Awesome, brilliant - so glad I bought tickets to see them!
M. T. Campos Didn't know they were in town; all I do is work and sleep now. I was living in El Paso in 2013 when they had their first concert there, I was like "The Cure" in El Paso? Talk about a once in a lifetime occurence; well, they are going back again this year, lol.
Yeah I love that he does such a long set and it is amazing the whole way through! They are so underrated as artists I don't think many people realise how talented or how influential they have been!
Vezonmodder I will be 39 in a few days and I still see you as my role model... you are still my inspiration and on that makes me fight what other people think and carry on being "ourselves"! :)

We love you ❤
🎩 Monsieur Smith
Robert cracked me up when he went on about how the whole royalty thing is a bunch of people that have never really done anything with their lives, and how he has distain for that whole thing, then turns right around and says "I should be king!", hahahahahaha!!!!
I love the band, and I think Robert is a very intelligent, talented songwriter, but cannot disagree more about the monarchy. Yes, hereditary privilege I'm not a fan of, but the royal family are mostly a force for good in the country, and I'm sorry they have raised awareness and generated more money for the economy than a punk band have. I thought Robert didn't come off well here to be honest. Yes, open and honest, but a bit rambling, incoherent, and disrespectful. Not a good interview at all really for me. He's far more intelligent than this shows.
The Hooded Man also what he said about religions was kinda rude. Just Cos he doesn’t like Christianity, that doesn’t mean he has to be so close minded and hate ALL religions... like what even man
I can see both sides to it obviously the artists he respects that took honours from the royal family have a different point of view than him or have grown to have a different one. He’s entitled to his own opinion and I'm not too easily offended so it doesn't bother me. What one defines as a “good” or “bad” force in the world is suspect to a ton of subjectivity anyways. I still think Robert is an intelligent, passionate and sincere person, his joke about being King at the end there was his way of kind of de-escalating his intense speech and ending on a much lighter funny note which shows he's aware of how he might have come across not to mention he has always been uncomfortable doing interviews.
No one makes me feel the way Robert makes me feel. He's fucking amazing. everything about him. perfect. fascinating. beautiful. every Cure album has at some point been my absolute favourite.
I have never really bothered with The Cure's music before but somehow I came to this interview and find Robert Smith really funny and insightful, especially his views on religion and monarchy. So I'm going to discover....Thanks Robert.
+Richard Albert Henderson I'm just now discovering the Cure too, but I am turned off by his views on religion. I'm very faith-centered and happy, and I owe a lot of that to my religion. Blanket statements about all religions are offensive and ignorant. Now the monarchy viewpoint is spot on.

Maybe R Smith will find it and write it down in a song :)
Such an amazing man/band...the reason why Cure fans love them and him so much, is because they make their music with such authenticity, and you can feel it and hear it in both the lyrics and sound. .... and this interview proves it. Such an intellectually humble man, genius even. I love that he says he's still waiting to make his best music...true artists never stop trying to create. ... thank you Robert!
This was the first interview i saw of Robert Smith and it immediately endeared me to him as a fan. I love his speaking voice and how grounded he comes across despite being so famous.

I've just seen the Cure at Wembley. I've been seeing them since the late 70s. Robert is one of the best, most articulate and genuinely ace people in music. I love him and the Cure to bits. I'm so impressed that he is still challenging himself and respects his past but never sits back on it. New song "it can never be the same" proves that this is a band that will never stop growing. This is probably the best interview of Robert Smith that I have seen 👏👏👏 He is such a nice guy, wonderful person. No wonder he could right so many unforgettable songs, he has a big heart and a bright brain, that’s where his music comes from. After all he is one of the greatest British living author, a legend and a simple man at the same time. Long life to him and to The Cure.
heard A Forest, that track was so intriguing, so ambient- it stood out from anything else around at that time. went downtown to a retail shop and bought an album called seventeen seconds, it never left the turntable for bloody ages. Then i went down south to see them play live, Brilliant, this was 1980
Your music is big in my house for many years. Love your songs and so do my kids. Thank you for your talent. Your music will always leave fond memories.
love how he is honest and reallistic about his art nowadays... i mean, disintegration, such an absolute masterpiece on so many levels, top 10 albums of all time without doubt... how could one ever top that...
I am really impressed how he can black out the background noise, an ongoing concert presumably. I could never handle that. It would totally riddle my train of thought in answer to the questions.
The best thing about Robert Smith is that, through all his personal and artistic evolution, he has never sold out his musical principals for commercial gains. I happen to be a fan, but whether you like The Cure’s music or not, they have never betrayed their core relationship with their music in order to fit a certain prefabricated mold. That takes commitment, courage, integrity, and an uncompromising passion.
I ended up here after the live stream from Sydney Opera House. That was a blast! Thank you Sydney Opera House and The Cure. Thank you Nick Wickham for directing. You nailed it. And thank you Robert Smith. :)
I love how Robert’s singing voice has remained so singular and beautiful, just like in the early ‘80s. He’s completely stayed true to himself too, throughout the years. It’s wonderful seeing him!
If Robert Smith was in therapy, I’d love to be a fly on the wall during his therapy sessions. He’s a really interesting person. Love his creative genius mind, his musical poetry, the way he expresses himself without caring what others think about him. He looked a lot like Ben Affleck in one of his earlier videos. The Cure songs take me back to my adolescent/teen years of the 80s. I feel like a teen when I listen to The Cure songs
Great guy for a night in a pub...with all the respect of the world. Such a great artist. I was at one of his concerts in Rotterdam, must have been in 1981,82. In the park. Great!
i love this video so much. robert’s voice and accent are so similar to that of my great uncle rodney’s. he passed today, he had a long battle with cancer. i never knew my second set of grandparents so he and my great aunt filled the part, haha. i’m glad that he’s out of pain but due to the coronavirus pandemic i haven’t seen him in at least six months. i miss him so much. i wish i was able to talk with him. i asked him once if he had known of the cure, but he hadn’t. he was a lot more into the rockabilly genre. i find this interview comforting to listen to now that he’s gone. i don’t know why i’m writing all of this down but maybe i’ll look back at this comment in years to come and smile. who knows.
All hail King Robert, lol love you guys! Thank you so much for all the beauty and darkness you've given us. No other band sounds even remotely like them or ever could
I have always enjoyed his music. Robert Smith is an original. His music has his unique imprint that's all his own and I love it! I could tell when it's Robert Smith song right off the back.
Robert... you're a genius, man. I love you. I've read Camus and Sartre in the French, too. Maybe we're both existentialists. Life is meaningless... but we give it meaning by doing things that give meaning to the lives of others. You through your music. Me, through my writing and care work. It keeps us going. It's what we're here for. Keep going, my friend. Much love x
I saw The Cure in Glasgow Barrowlands many years ago. Unfortunately I was pished and can't remember it. I'm told it was the best gig I've ever been to.
hes just so loved by so many people that i doubt bad stuff happens to him; the whole world wishes him the best, a beautiful life full of art, colors and love. Must be hard to be a loved goth

@@august_math1604 I think you're right. Relistening it sounds like Cure songs are playing in the background.
Great interview Robert. So humbling and truthful. Always loved the Cure ❤️❤️👌🎶
I love you, Robert Smith! For so many reasons! Mostly for being, YOU! 💜💙💜
He is an excellent musician, a great singer, intelligent, sensitive, he is a great poet! Thanks for this nice interview!
I ended up here after the live stream from Sydney Opera House. That was a blast! Thank you Sydney Opera House and The Cure. Thank you Nick Wickham for directing. You nailed it. And thank you Robert Smith. :)
Top interview. I am not a big fan of The Cure, but i really do love this interview. Humility and genius. I like his vision
Hello. We love the Cure in America. 🎶. I love this interview. He should be the King. 🎼🎵🎹🎶🎸.
Genuine and timeless man, and of course the music which spans 4 decades that never feels old.
I love how Robert’s singing voice has remained so singular and beautiful, just like in the early ‘80s. He’s completely stayed true to himself too, throughout the years. It’s wonderful seeing him!
What positive vibes!
If he does somehow become a king, can I be a citizen of Mad Bob Land?
Yeahs you can, sur. You sure can today.
Robert Smith is authentic and straight forward. Let's not forget, a genius in his own way. Long live The Cure.
So truth to himself and to his art. What a privilege was growing up with his music. Forever his fan!
Robert Smith through his music has been there for me than any friend
We love you in France because you are very British! Very friendly guy, intelligent and funny.
Robert smith is just the best hands down!!! His personality alone is one of a kind
He is not only a musical genius but humble and sweet! I just love him!
Been a fan of the cure since the 80's
Te Cure is the sound track to my life. I am 53, STILL skate boarding and STILL listening to The Cure!
Great guy for a night in a pub...with all the respect of the world.
Such a great artist.
I was at one of his concerts in Rotterdam, must have been in 1981,82. In the park. Great!
I could watch and listen to Robert forever and ever and ever.
Ha, I love Robert. His honest views are legendary
True. He real honey.
Gotta love his no bullshit attitude. But still polite enough to do the interview and thank them afterwards.
Great interview. Robert is a deadly character. Hilarious!
Agree!
"I'm not a role model" is exactly the thing I would want a role model to say, and goddammit, Bobby... You did not disappoint. #FuckingLegend🖤
Bobby? It's Robert Smith, and only Robert Smith 😏
@@suzye7197 think it was for emphasis. Like a screenwrite. Idk lol
Omg Suze I see the wink now 😅
I also realize, now …. 🕳️
I LOVE you Robert Smith! You are Genuine and that's a hard thing to find these days...Thank you for being YOU
Somehow managed to never see him interviewed before. Only makes me love the "mad leader" more. Eerie but not surprising how much our viewpoints sync.
Best interview of him I've ever seen (I've seen/heard a lot).
i love this video so much. robert’s voice and accent are so similar to that of my great uncle rodney’s. he passed today, he had a long battle with cancer. i never knew my second set of grandparents so he and my great aunt filled the part, haha.
i’m glad that he’s out of pain but due to the coronavirus pandemic i haven’t seen him in at least six months. i miss him so much. i wish i was able to talk with him. i asked him once if he had known of the cure, but he hadn’t. he was a lot more into the rockabilly genre.
i find this interview comforting to listen to now that he’s gone. i don’t know why i’m writing all of this down but maybe i’ll look back at this comment in years to come and smile.
Man these musicians rule my world!
Robert... you're a genius, man. Much love x
My mom wasn’t thrilled about my Cure posters. What a rebel I was! Lol!
Very nice guy and clever ! Love the Cure👍
Love his pov of growing older and his sense of humor.
I saw The Cure in Glasgow Barrowlands many years ago. Unfortunately I was pished and can't remember it. I'm told it was the best gig I've ever been to.
Just love him so much! ❤️❤️❤️
hes just so loved by so many people that i doubt bad stuff happens to him; the whole world wishes him the best, a beautiful life full of art, colors and love. Must be hard to be a loved goth
