I really like that they draw out Pearl feeling bad and Garnet struggling to forgive her. It's very true to life. People don't just apologize and immediately get forgiven all the time. And fusion is such an intimate and personal thing to Garnet, and lying about it was a major violation.
Yea its very noticable how dissheveled the team is with pearl out of sync trying to prove herself, with her being much less elegant than she was before

i don’t understand why people get so upset at you guys for criticizing pearl when you’re perfectly in the right to do so, one of the main messages of steven universe is that everyone has flaws and if people can’t understand that then they truly didn’t understand what they were watching
The show itself recognizes Pearl messed up. The blinders on people are massive sometimes.
I think these are left over die hard pearl defenders from when the show was still airing. you literally couldn't say anything bad about her back then because people would get mad and bring up mostly head cannons as to why she is "perfect"

[No Spoilers To This Point] Fun fact about Opal (fusion of Pearl and Amethyst). You'd think she'd be constantly at war with herself, but the thing is that they can only form Opal when they have a common goal. Opal is single-mindedly determined, with Amethyst's brutal ability to throw herself full force into something and Pearl's attention to detail and calculatory mind. Opal cares about nothing other than what her current purpose is, reflecting both Pearl and Amethyst's deep desire to have a sense of duty. Unfortunately this hyperfixation can lead to her neglecting other responsibilities and falling apart in panic when she realizes she failed to complete the WHOLE task. Such as being focused with blinding intensity on getting Steven home safe, so much so that she totally forgot to get the Heaven Beatle.
I thought it was more so rhetoric gems desire to impress steven and feel cool in his eyes. This is why amethyst said "u got carried away with all those fancy backflips". I think this is more heavily implied in the episode "know your fusion" and is the reason sardonyx takes over the show (garnet and pearl get carried away showing off" but, this could all be the influence of pearl
All of this and the fact the second her task is done (successfully or not) she separates because she becomes aware of the two severely conflicting personalities within herself.
Amethyst takes a lot of inspiration from Greg actually, a big one is her hair. One of the first things she tells him is "I love your hair" when Greg is first meeting the gems, and now her hair greatly resembles his from when he was younger. Star shapes are also a big thing with the Crystal Gems as well.
I wonder if the stars are a Greg thing or a Crystal Gem thing (wich came first)
@@Jr837_ As we saw in Rose's Scabbard and Story For Steven, Rose Quartz at least had the Crystal Gem star symbol long before meeting Greg; and the star is incorporated into the Temple's room panel.

As a huge Pearl stan myself I must go on the record and say that if certain commenters are refusing to acknowledge her trash fuckup status they're missing the point. The fact that she's such a disaster of a person is what makes her compelling! I don't think I'd be nearly as interested in her character if she wasn't constantly doing everything wrong.

I absolutely agree that Peal should’ve just gone up to Garnet and had a straight up apology, giving her space and time. It’s so fascinating to see how different people operate because of their experiences. I think because Pearl was in service of Rose for so long that she thinks the best way to earn anything is by doing things and that will make it better. But Garnet needs things more up front. This is the kind of communication issue I see with people in real life where their clashing personalities can make it hard to resolve things.

EXACTLY, not only that but her entire purpose is to *serve* as a pearl, and even with rose they still had a goal to reach making it easy for her to just focus on whatever she needed to do- so even though rose wanted her to become her own gem/person or to think for herself more, it obviously wasn't an easy thing for pearl to wrap her head around, it's nice how you can rewatch the series and catch a bunch of details like this in hindsight. (I also think rose isn't as straightforward as garnet either imo which changes the dynamic alot)
she did though? She says 'I'm sorry' and Garnet cuts her off because she's not ready to talk yet.

Woah. I think this is the first time Pearl (and the show) refers to herself as "*a* Pearl"? I never noticed that.
I may have said this in another comment, in another reaction, but I think is interesting how Pearl and Amethyst both have self-worth issues but approach them differently. Amethyst copes by constantly joking in order to avoid the issue, while Pearl is an overachiever that tries to be perfect to make up for it, just how she tries to make up for her mistake by catching Peridot. Garnet doesn't have the same self worth issues, which is probably why they both gravitate towards her to find an answer or a way to lift themselves up. This, as seen with Pearl, can mean they're using Garnet if things go towards the worst case scenario, so I'm glad this is the beginning of Pearl learning that she has to be strong for herself by herself too in order to be her equal as she wishes.
Would really like to hear your takes on "I'm just a Pearl." I mean, I know you guys are definitely like twenty episodes farther in by now, but that line just gained a lot more meaning when *SPOILERS* Peridot reveals that Pearls are literally basically the lowest of the low in the gem hierarchy.
Honestly I think they missed that part because they started talking when she said it, but it was a very big moment in understanding Pearl a little better
well, there are still SPOILERS:
Pebbles, and pearls are a basically status symbols, as only gems of certain ranks can have one. so technically, pearls can have authority, based on the gem they are serving, like if they are acting as the secretary of a high ranking gem, they can issue orders to gems way lower than that.
for example, if jasper had a pearl, that pearl might be able to order Rubies around, on jaspers behalf. although they are doomed to always being with a gem of higher rank, so they can never be the highest on whatever station or outpost they are.
You absolutely need more space than that

Yay! I'm super exited for you guys to see more of Peridot shes one of my fave characters of the show! And I'm jealous that you guys don't have to wait for new episodes like we did. A good example is season 5 , all episodes along with the big hiatus between them, it took almost 4 years for it to end.
Cartoon Network should have made a We Survived the SU Hiatus shirt. The fact it'd be like 6 months between episodes at times was wild

Rose Quartz had the star symbol for the Crystal Gems from the very beginning of the rebellion (the holographic recording in Rose's Scabbard). It's just by coincidence that Greg "Mr. Universe" thousands of years later adopted a star as his space-based act's logo, which is now worn by Steven through the shirts left over from Greg's music career.

- Jamie refers Steven as "O Captain! My Captain!" which is a reference to Walt Whitman's poem or the 1989 film Dead Poets Society, & then "It is the east, & we are the Crystal Gems" is a reference to William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet
- Both Steven & Peridot both make an akanbe face a Japanese facial gesture
- As Peridot escapes it is similar to Doctor Claw from Inspector Gadget when he yells out “Curse you Gadget” or “I will get you next time”

I will say that Pearl did try to talk things out earlier, to which Garnet went "not now" (Keystone Motel) - Though I don't think that makes her actions here better, the context is just a bit different, like she's not giving Garnet the time and space she indirectly asked for, and instead going like 'no talk? ok all action then', trying to rush fixing things
I also want to point out that amethyst is also the youngest besides Steven. Amethyst is the most child like most of the time and usually she gets serious when the others who are supposed to be the adults are suddenly acting like kids and won’t stop fighting or she has some deep insecurities that are growing and are going unaddressed.
A star is the symbol of the Crystal Gems. All of them have one on them in some way.
The sunburn theory becomes even funnier because with Dewey having just come up at the moment y'all paused, I thought you were about to add Dewey's perma-sunburn to that theory.
I don't mind the pausing for such delightful and wholesome banter in the least. Also, H-man is a precious cinnamon bun.

Well done h-man xD he has cracked the Steven universe theme code and enlightened the squad. On a serious note I feel like an apology for all the toxicity you guys gotta put up with. Like getting threats over a show or character is just something that shouldn’t be a thing. Whoever does that has lost touch with reality or has so little going on in their actual lives that this is all they have. Again just straight up shouldn’t happen. So just wanna say appreciate all the effort you guys put into this channel and offering a chance to connect with you guys through a simple love and appreciation for the same show.

23:21 About Amethyst's pants looking like Greg's... Maybe a bit but it wouldn't be the first time. In "Story for Steven" when a short-haired Amethyst meets Greg she says she really likes his hair, now her hair looks almost exactly like young Greg's hair.
The whole thing with Pearl demonstrated that no one is infallible. Even the ones you believe to do no wrong, can do wrong and make mistakes. And forgiveness isn't easy. That's the other lesson here. Just saying you forgive someone won't make everything right. Both parties have to work through their problems together. It's not as easy as saying "I'm sorry" and then "that's okay" and act like nothing happened.
And I loved how Steven conjured his shield three times. He was on top of it in this one!

To answer the thought you had at the end about the stars on amethyst's pants, the gem's outfits actually change whenever they poof and reform, they come out wearing something different which is a cool detail, so amethyst never had those stars on her pants in the beginning of the show I believe
Fusion is an intimate act. For Garnet, it’s an even bigger deal. It was dangerous and manipulative thing for Pearl to do and I’m glad they didn’t have it brushed over. Pearl even holds his inability to fuse over Greg in a flashback as though it devalues the relationship because for Gems it is important.
Idk if anyone else noticed, but i think it's a cool detail, ever since we found out Garnet was a fusion, her glasses went from 2 shades of orange to red and blue, and it's implied that depending on which color takes up most of the glasses at any given time, its either Ruby or Sapphire doing the talking. For example, when Garnet told Pearl that she lied and cant forgive her, the glasses are primarily red, meaning it was Ruby who was saying it, plus it was a more aggressive thing to say, but then the next scene when she talks about learning of consequences, the glasses are mainly blue and it was a more intellectual statement, so it was Sapphire
Steven's hair is shaped like a "rose", it's more obvious in the toys

One of the things I love about this show is that everyone has a flaw. And it's not a flaw that can be easily overlooked. They actually struggle and it hinders their development, it makes them feel so much more like people.
So yes, the characters do messed up things sometimes. It's understandable, but doesn't mean it's excusable. You shouldn't feel pressure to like a character, just because they have good qualities and learn in the future.
I haven't seen the comments, but anyone mindlessly defending every action they take honestly is missing a key message of the show.
another difference between the pearl and amethyst situations are that for amethyst it was a sort of spur of the moment thing. whereas pearl kept doing it and had many chances to stop.
While I’m not making excuses for either but due to what Greg said, it’s heavily applied and confirmed by his dialogue that Amethyst has done it before.
@@jacobmiller2663 yeah i considered that too, but i feel like it's not something that's happened often and it hasn't happened for a while, based on what greg said and the fact that he was feeling comfortable around her until it ended up happening again. i feel like what i said in my comment still stands, but yes amethyst had done it at least twice.

I just found these reaction videos the other day on TikTok and I swear I've never been so impatient about video releases before, hahah! I'm usually not one to follow series, but I'm so invested in this and seeing you guys react! I can't wait to see you all react to the next few seasons!
Back when this was first airing, I never felt the same way about Pearl after she tricked Garnet into fusing.
It was a really huge violation and it never sat right with me.
Yeah pearl did really fuck up but the way fusion works as an extension of their relationships and Pearl’s history of serving other makes the line “I need someone to tell me what to do” hit completely different.
Sorry I know Steven Universe fans can be really intense but this stuff is super interesting to me.
Respect to you guys for sticking through this series and being able to enjoy it amidst the toxicity. I’m really sorry and I hope it’s not getting to you. Y’all don’t deserve that.

Kind of ironic but really sad, this show has great lessons regarding emotion regulation and effective communication. Too bad so many of the fans miss that.
Considering the average delay between recording a video and posting it for most youtubers, you may already have realized/remembered this, but:
Remember that in the episode "Jailbreak"(season 1 finale), Peridot, Jasper, and Lapis came to Earth right up to the Crystal Gem's doorstep. They didn't need to track anything with the gem communication tower. So in that regard Pearl wasn't really putting the Earth at risk when she deceived Garnet(at least not any more risk than it was *already* in). The deception was *purely* an interpersonal betrayal.
Mysterious transmissions from Earth could absolutely have drawn unwanted attention from Homeworld. Plus as Garnet points out in that episode, Pearl's stunt stole time that could have been spent actually trying to find Peridot. So it wasn't a purely interpersonal problem.
I can't wait for the next episodes, the peridot arc is my favorite
I finally caught up with this reaction series and I’m really glad you guys are willing to point out Pearl’s flaws and attitude. When I first watched this, I found her way of handling conflict very immature, and it felt like the fan base attacked me for not liking Pearl. But I love Pearl. When I got the backstory I understood her more; the complexity of her character is interesting. However I wasn’t going to ignore that she makes hurtful decisions to the rest of the cast.
You can like a character without supporting and justifying every decision they make.
One of those moments of, "Just you wait until you see how wrong Pearl is."
Edit: Note, I love Pearl. But she has a lot of pressure on her that at this point No one has any idea about.

The way how you all feel about Pearl’s actions are justified as a majority of us felt the same way when we witnessed it. I’m just ready to see everybody’s reaction as the story progresses.
I do like that whenever Pearl messes up she does have to face the consequences of her actions. It's not just like "oh it's fine" the other characters don't agree with her on things aswel.

Been watching you guys for quite a while, loving the content. I really hope the SU community doesn't overall ruin the enjoyment you guys have of the show. I notice a lot of uploads of SU always have to come with some kind of disclaimer where you have to explain (what ultimately ends up being...) your opinions on characters like Pearl and Amythest to close-minded fans; from my perspective, it's never a good sign when that happens.
Oh it doesn’t affect it at all, we just call them out because we don’t see any benefit to just letting them do it without being told what they’re doing is wrong

For the star topic on the characters. The star is the symbol of the crystal gems. If you look on all the crystal gems characters, they all got a star somewhere on them indicating their a crystal gem.

Im glad y’all call out pearl while watching this series because she was honestly so scummy for the things she’s done. She’s selfish and moody to the point she puts her “son” in danger constantly. She also exposes Steven to her emotional outbursts regularly even knowing better, comparing her to amethyst in that sense is a stretch because amethyst is literally younger than pearl by thousands of years. I love pearl but I don’t excuse the crap she throws onto Steven and the rest of the team just because she was in love with someone. She can grieve for as long as she needs of course but she didn’t do it healthily. Truthfully pearl is an incredibly complex character that is still somehow relatable! She’s beautifully written and I admire her character a lot for that! I’ve never seen a character like her before so I encourage seeing more of her type in the future just as long as there’s growth and understanding happening. But as for pearl I’d be her good friend but I’d ask her to NEVER speak of her love life with me lmfaoo.
People are forgetting that they’ve already watched the entire show and know of the character development that occurred in that show. Meanwhile, these guys are STILL watching the show and haven’t seen the rest of it. People just have to wait and see if their opinions change or not, that’s the point of watching a reaction series and seeing the reaction towards a character changing

I love just. How fucked some of Pearl's arc is. It's great. I love that she is so fucking flawed for a big chunk of the series. It makes some of the upcoming developments feel SO fucking rewarding for how much development we had to go through with her. I hated her when I first watched this show but she grew on me as the story evolved and I ended up loving her character. She's absolutely a character with flaws. MAJOR ones. She has done wrong and I love that. It makes her so interesting.
As someone who hated pearl but then learned to like her i understand where they come from but the way people react to how they feel is insane everyone is allowed to have thier own opinions lets all just enjoy Steven together ❤
Exactly. Like when the show was new, i honestly didn't liked pearl that much and her obsession with rose always made me feel a bit uncomfortable. But eventually learning more about her, especially in season 5 made me understand her a bit more. That's what SortaStupid have been feeling about pearl lately too, and i find it so damn immature that some pearl fans not only get mad at the guys but also THREATENING them. Like don't they understand that the guys still don't know everything about pearl?? That is just horrible. The guys have every right to criticize pearl for the stunt she pulled with garnet. And little by little they will eventually understand her a bit more. So those certain pearl fans should just back off and let the guys enjoy the show.

I really hope that I don't seem unreasonable but during the whole Pearl vs. Amethyst debate (despite them both being perfectly lovable characters to enjoy) what Amethyst did is still more unsettling. The key is intent of actions. This last episode, Pearl (heck even Amethyst) made it clear that they did not think Pearl's actions could affect Garnet so deeply. They held her on a pedestal. What Pearl did was irresponsible, but she didn't even think about how it affected others (still horrible yes). When Amethyst turned into Rose, despite the lesser stakes, it was more visceral. Amethyst was hurting and she responded by doing something she Knew would hurt Greg, because she had did it before. It was pure malice, not a misguided missile like Pearl's horrible self centered attempt at self esteem. Amethyst hurt she make you hurt. Another big difference is that Greg is a lot quicker to forgive after someone willingly and aggressively pressed a trauma button. Amethyst could not pull that same stunt off with Garnet.... actually maybe she is more wise than Pearl because she didn't toe that line yet.

She's supposed to be extremely flawed but holds everyone to a high standard, herself included which is why she's constantly trying make up for what's she's done. They can think whatever they want about Pearl, but honestly I don't think "she put everybody in danger" is correct, I know they don't know what exactly is Peridot doing yet, but "She made everyone lose time" is more accurate in my opinion
yeah garnet just said that she distracted everyone, not necessarily endangered anyone. I think the only time Pearl accidentally endangers anyone is the spaceship episode (and even then, steven has his bubble...) she typically errs on the other side.
In this situation loosing time could result in putting everybody in danger. Since they don't know that Peridot is just running in circles with nothing to do, they might think that every moment wasted is giving her more time to plan either an attack or a way to get to contact homeworld, thus bringing more powerful gems to earth. So, both statements are correct, one is more small picture, the other one is more big picture.
