- The Escalante area of Utah is hands down my favorite area to explore in the state. It's rugged, wild, incredibly remote and unforgiving. Hiking here requires mental grit and a willingness to take on a lot of bushwhacking. I was joined by @eric_hanson on this 30 mile backpacking trip through Harris Wash, the Escalante River and the Cosmic Ashtray. This has been a bucket list loop for me and am grateful to have had Eric to experience this incredible place with .

Eric seems like such a fun person to spend time in the backcountry with. I still have not made it to the Cosmic Ashtray yet.....I know I know, I live to close to have not gone yet.
Even with how close you are it’d still be a BIG day of walking!

When it's windy at the Cosmic Ashtray, you can witness erosional processes at work. Sand whirls in there, carving it out more.
What an absolutely amazing place! Tough hike though for sure. You guys definitely had a great time haha.
Yeah we had a good time. I knew Eric would be up for a tough, off trail hike and his experience really played well into making it work out.
Bout to go to coyote gulch this weekend. My first backpacking trip to the canyons of Escalante! And first multi day trip.

Eric’s tripod looks so big and clunky. I hope it’s at least carbon fiber.
If I have to bring a bigger full frame or mirrorless I will def invest in Peak Design’s tripod or Ulanzi’s carbon fiber and cheaper competitor.
Lol, Justin has those gigantic Komperdel camera poles. I love his idea and use those with the Ace Pro and new(!!!) X4.

Ashtray does look sweet! Glad you were able to make it out there after wanting to do it for years! Have you tried thermal knee high waterproof socks with a liner sock underneath? Curious to see if that would make a difference in your comfort wading through all that water.
Thanks man! I haven’t ever tried waterproof socks. Honestly they just seem to be more hassle than I care to mess with. I could be wrong though.
I've hiked several miles along one Slot Canyon, the name of which escapes me. All during that adventure my mind was on Aron Ralston's story. For myself, I decided I'll not hike any slot canyon. It wasn't a comfortable experience, for MEeee.

What guy do you follow to get ideas of where to hike in Utah? I want to take my sons on an epic 5-6 day hike
A lot of my planning is done from scouring through maps and google earth. But the person I referenced is Jamal Green who has the channel and website, Across Utah.
Leave No Trace - Did both of you pack out all of your #2 waste?
Mt Everest climbers will be REQUIRED to haul out all their #2 waste from this year on. Considering the 6 weeks at base camp to get acclimated to thin air + the number of days climbing to higher camps, going up & coming down - that's going to be a whole heck of a lot of wasted weight - I'm thinking Clients will endeavor to get their Sherpas to pack out their #2 waste - unless the Sherpas raise an even bigger stink.

WHY NOT POUR HOT/WARM WATER INTO YOUR FROZEN SHOES?..WET IS WET?
I've seen someone do that before and even with what they thought was not too hot and melted their insoles.
