  • How To Install A Distributor on a 1991 Toyota Corolla. This should include all 1988-1997 Corollas with distributors! I'm not sure how well it matches up with the 4A-GF engine, but all other should be the same, plus or minus a vacuum line.

    Than you so much for posting these videos. As parents, my wife and I work hard to teach my 2 daughters and 1 son that:
    1. while men and women are different, and the those differences are wonderful, there are no such thing as "men's" jobs or "women's" jobs.
    2. No matter how complicated something might look, or sometimes actually be, with some study and knowledgeable direction, they can do anything.
    I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, and I'm sure you have seen it and many times facilitated it, but it's amazing how much personal confidence they get from solving a problem themselves. My oldest daughter is a senior in high school this year, a 4.0 student and a state champion swimmer, and she seemed more proud of herself after watching this video and successfully replacing her distributor, than when she was on the podium at the state finals. Thank you so much, this video was exactly what she needed.

    Thank you for a very instructional video! I used it as a guide to replace the distributor on my wife's 1995 Toyota Corolla 7A-FE engine. For anyone interested, I removed the air cleaner to make it easier to get to the fasteners for the distributor cap. I also notice that as long as you remember which way the rotor is facing you will have no problems with installing the new distributor. I found only one hold down bolt.

    So awesome to see a female working on cars! My daughter (4 years old) is my little car buddy. The other day when I asked her if she wanted to help work on my truck she said daddy, only boys work on cars. I said no maam there are girls out there that are better at working on cars than daddy!! It made her really happy to hear that lol I hope I teach her well enough to be as good as you someday!

      SHON3Nknife any update man? My corolla died at a stop light engine code was misfire cyl #4 so I changed spark plugs and wires but then decided to go deeper. I took off dist. cap and spotted oil in cyl #4 spark wire location and rotor was burnt (replaced both) and ign coil so I just needed to know how to take off distributor to replace o-ring so here I am. Just wanted to know your case

    I did crack both radiators in two '95 Corollas that we have, from leaning on them while working on the engines. Both cracked in the same place: about an inch below the radiator cap, a few inches across. They were both original, and I'm glad they cracked. Removed the upper and lower tanks to recycle the aluminum, and found out they were about 50% plugged up. They were about $60/ea. on Amazon.

    I have the same car! Except its blue. I call it Le Bleu. Apparently these cars have an issue with distributers. I've had mine 10 yrs and have gone through 4 now. At this point I've tried Autozone and Advance and both break down under a load. Going to try a new one from Toyota. You seem like someone I've known for years. Thanks for the video!!

    Nothing like a frozen fudge bar after a productive day! :)
    Actually had to replace the distributor on a 97 Altima, because the press-fit bushings were worn and leaking oil. It was only a matter of time before oil seeped through and shorted the ignition out. I think I got a Hitachi brand. They are expansive new, so it's great that you found a used one in good condition. Rule of thumb (for me at least) is that I always disconnect the neg battery wire if I'm working on or near the ignition components. Probably overkill, but when it comes to the newer cars, you can't be too safe.

      @D6Spanky  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about the battery and I think it was dead and that's why I didn't disconnect. But I should have done it for those who don't know better.

    Thanks for the video. Why did you have to change the distributor. I have a 97 Corolla, the same set up that you have. When I took the Dist Cap off I did notice oil within the cap. I got a new O ring from Advance Auto for about 4 dollars. I will try and install it tomorrow. How did you test the distributor to figure out that it needed replacement. Sorry for my lack of knowledge. But I still enjoy your video.

  • @JP-uu2rw
    @JP-uu2rw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You missed the most important first step regardless of what engine it is your working on and that is that the engine needs to be on the compression stroke at Top Dead Center (TDC) with the distributor rotor pointing to the #1 Cylinder position on the distributor and the timing mark on the crank pully needs to point at 0 degrees. You need to rotate the engine so that it is in the TDC position when you pull the distributor if the crank pully is at 0 degrees and the rotor is pointing 180 degrees away from the #1cylinder position on the distributor, you are at TDC on the exhaust stroke, not compression. The problem I have with the video is it assumes you are replacing a distributor with another, and this is not always the case. If you do the procedure described above, you will get it right every time. The only time I never had an engine start was when I did not ensure TDC on a compression stroke. after this is all done you need to set the final ignition timing

    Just an update for everyone, most likely 4afe and 7afe have same distributor as long as functioning is concerned, 7afe might have an extra pin coz when I went to get mine for 4afe, all wreckers/used part dealers said they have one from 1.8L corolla and when I inspected two of the the distributors, it had a little sticker written 4afe on it. One was pulled out from a car in front of me.

    Back in the day, with my 71 and 79 Toyota Corona's, prior to pulling the distributor out you would put match marks on the distributor body and a spot on the engine, as you did. But you also had to mark the centerline of the rotor to the edge of the distributor, as the gears were helical cut, and the rotor would rotate as you pulled the distributor out. Upon reinstallation you would have to set the rotor into a position so that as the drive and driven gears mesh as you push the unit home, the rotor will rotate and come to rest inline with its body match mark. Ignition timing would then remain unchanged. Great job! Question for you. Were there any after installation issues, or did the Corolla fire up fine?

    • @D6Spanky
      @D6Spanky  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I saw that on a lot of videos but didn't realize why. That was a fantastic explanation. Thanks. Well, once I remembered to re-plug the connectors, it worked fine. :) I came back to the engine and went over the steps in my head and started laughing at myself when I saw I hadn't plugged it back in. But yeah, it runs!

    Your videos are awesome. I just replace my 97 Corollas radiator with your help thank you. I am now thinking about replacing my distributor. I can drive my car for about half an hour then it dies on me. After half an hour of cooling down it starts right back up. I have a question for you, is the ignition control module located inside the distributor? Thank you in advance

    • @D6Spanky
      @D6Spanky  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it is just the ignitor and the ignition coil in there. Is your car throwing any codes? My video: Fuses, Brick Walls and Codes! I have a 91, 68k. Ran great for the year I've drove it, started stuttering on acceleration. Changed plugs, ran perfect for a few days but back to stuttering again. Any ideas as to what could cause that? When the heat is on there is also a strange smell evident.

    • @D6Spanky
      @D6Spanky  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the heat is on and there is a strange smell, I'd check the heater core. A way to check that is to run your defrost on full and see if it leaves a film in the inside of your windshield. If it does, your heater core needs to be replaced. As for the acceleration stutter, it's either spark, fuel or air. How is it when it idles? and then when you rev it?

      +D6Spanky im doing this replacement in a day or two, how did you adjust the timing ?

    • @veggieboy321
      @veggieboy321 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sharad - I replaced my distributor in 30 minutes or less. I took off that cap, cranked the starter only briefly once or twice until the rotor was in a distinct position (3:00 for me but it could be any position you can remember easily).
      After removing the bolts holding the distributor in place, I pulled it out and mentally noted the position of the rotor (it twisted a few degrees as I pulled it out). I held the new distributor in place and turned the rotor to the same position as the old one, pushed the distributor and bingo - the new rotor was at 3:00. Easy peasey.
      As for timing, I don't really understand - my '95 Tacoma doesn't have any timing adjustment.

    • @transdetendal
      @transdetendal 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      well on your (i guess) you can loosen a bolt and gently turn the distributor and the same goes fore the other type BUT if you got the timing light on you will notice the timing be way off as in 14-20 degrees before tdc ,and wont redard and very suddently die, yours will start idling rougher and go more badly untill it dies. idifference is your isnt controlled by (im not sure) the ecu or fuell controller box and wont tollerate you manipulating it, and shuts off to go in default mode or emergency programming, your will ajust and runn as you set it too!

      Luckily for you, the distributors on these will only go on one way. You should be able to look in where the distributor goes and see the angle of the groove for the cam (where the distributor fits in) so see if you can just eyeball it. Give that a try and then let me know if that was helpful or not. I'll see what else I can come up with if it doesn't. :)

Thanks for your help, i hope everything is on the right position. Let me know if a did it everything right or if you have any advice in reference to what i did it.

      You can find them at wal-mart but they sell fast cause there really good! I agree Brian is a wealth of knowledge. Although, from what i've seen so far he doesn't suffer from big head syndrome. :) Brian and I have a lot of common interest, and it's probably why I enjoy his vids and not just the mechanical ones. Btw did you ever get your kiln wired in?

    • @D6Spanky
      @D6Spanky  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I'll have to check them out. Thanks. I'd be surprised to see Brian get cocky. He's certainly confidant but not arrogant! I have not been able to get my kiln wired in. I need to find out exactly how much it is going to cost. Have to punch a hole in the house to get the line outside and then bury it (dig a trench, preferably with a trencher). I may also need to replace the plug on the kiln. Just looking at it, I think that's a wise move. Not to mention I'll have to drop my USAA homeowners for someone else because they won't insure homes with kilns on the property (which is ridiculous). So... a lot of prep work and saving up the money to do it first.

    • @Longtrailside
      @Longtrailside 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that's a lot to go thru for a kiln. I wired my shop with a 6 gauge 220v 50 amps extension cord to the power pole, so if anyone says anything i just unplug it :) You almost could do the same, but just by having the thing on your property, they can drop you no less. Seems like your screwed either way you go.
      Having it on your property=screwed
      Wired in= totally screwed
      Question to ask yourself, is it worth having for the trouble and financial burden.

      @D6Spanky  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Well, getting 220v to the garage for a plug, not permanently wired in, yes, worth it. I used to make a decent amount of money doing pottery (the large bowl I thre in the "spanky throws a bowl" vid would sell for about $50 depending on the glaze quality). It was my major before I switched to Automotive. Auto repair is a much steadier/reliable source of income than art. Anyway, I also want to run some more 110v because there are only 3 outlets in the garage and that's just not ok. :)

    Hi D6Spanky- I'm replacing the distributor on my '90 Corolla (4AFE) and am wondering if there is supposed to be a gasket between the distributor mounting plate and the block. I do not have one, but this distributor has been off before and I'm wondering if someone forgot to replace that gasket. There are two holes in the block below the distributor shaft hole and oil all over the side of the block from those holes downward. Seems like there should be a gasket there but I can't find a parts breakdown to confirm and I can't tell from your video (too far away). All I can find is info on the shaft o-ring which isn't my problem. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    • @D6Spanky
      @D6Spanky  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Gary! Thanks for watching! I don't believe there was a gasket, especially if I didn't mention it. you could always use a caulk type gasket maker product like Permatech's Ultra Black. That's a great product.

    • @garylewis327
      @garylewis327 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply. I may give that a try. It just seems strange that there's oil coming out of those two holes and yet the mounting plate is metal-to-metal with the block. Nothing to stop it from running down and leaking all over the floor, which it's been doing for a couple of years now. Anyway, thanks for the great video! It was a big help. - Gary

    • @garylewis327

      Just a followup, D6Spanky - turns out those holes aren't holes at all - only indentations. They don't go all the way through the block. So the oil in them had collected there after running down from the valve cover. I pulled the valve cover and put some Permatex gasket maker where it was leaking - at the corners where the gasket goes over the cams. Glad that's resolved!

      I just replaced my distributor (thanks to this awesome video) due to a toasted ignition coil. It was running rough at higher RPMs in spite of the new distributor going in in exactly the same position as the old one. I thought my ECU was going bad! It didn't occur to me that the timing would need to be adjusted! I came back to the comments to see if anyone else had a similar situation and found this gem of a comment! Now I'm going to go searching for your video on adjusting the timing. Gosh i hope it exists!!

    • @D6Spanky
      @D6Spanky  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shawn Carter I really wished I had filmed that! I'm hoping I can quickly explain. with the car running hook up a timing light, and shine it on the timing marks, as you do this with the distibutor unbolted but still installed, turn the distributor to either the front or back of the car and watch for the timing marks to line up. once they are lined up, rebolt the distributor.

    2 minutes in , 3 mistakes....all 3 unneccassary steps. Didn't even finish. Customers always tell me who they used when trying to DIY...so, I always look and find the same things...shadtree folks trying to teach others what they know nothing about. Done correctly, it's a five minute job...sony need to remove cap, don't need to remove the wires from the spark plugs either. But the biggest mistake she made...was not setting it to TDC BEFORE she started.
