    John Connelly made nuclear assault the thinking man's thrash band with topical, social political lyrics. Not to mention he was a top notch vocalist in one of the most brutally breakneck bands the genre produced.

      they're better than the big four. Not saying that to sound really exaggerated or something but they really really really are better. the mosh pits were brutal. the festival these guys have especially the one here in L.A was super brutal. These guys are fuckin brutal. They might not sound Brutal But they're so fuckin Brutal. Holy shit dude i couldn't even mosh anymore to them because the two bands before them hirax and toxic holocaust took the air and energy out of me. Before toxic holocaust it was evildead and the last one was nuclear assault and wow the pit was just too brutal. the only word i can describe Nuclear assault is Brutal because they simply are Brutal. me and my bro came out the venue Bleeding. So brutal dont think i have ever seen my brother bleed for slayer but for nuclear assault we came out Fucked up! Thrash til death mother fuckers!

    Met him and Danny back in 1987. They were selling their own shirts at the "festival" and they were very cool about looking for my size which was only a medium at the time and they kept digging until they found it and John threw it to Danny who then handed it to me, my Hang the Pope shirt that got me into a world of trouble and we weren't Catholic but at school along with my Hell Awaits shirt. The mosh circle was vicious for several of the groups. Death Angel filled in at the last minute as Destruction or maybe Kreator had canceled. Death Angel members who arrived early were nice too in that they chatted with the dozen or 2 of us who also arrived early. I don't remember the order but King Diamond and Metal Church were 2 of the top 3 headliners but I was history by then and puking purple in the outside trash can. The skinheads and longhairs were battling in the mosh circle and the skinheads were the more brutal but they spared me as my hair was a shaggier military cut and being blue eyed with light hair got me more mercy than given to my darker skinned friends. Honestly though, all day long there were non-stop ambulances picking up folks with broken bones and concussions or gashes. I could tell much more but I'm already straying off topic.

      I'm just jotting notes to myself here as I'm trying to remember who else performed that day. Like I say, I was gone before nightfall but it was late June or early July so the day was long and we had met some guys from Madison and we were drinking very warm, cheap Milwaukee beer but I'd only eaten a little cheese and crackers for breakfast and suffered one of my first known migraines. In no order of who else pops into mind were also Death, At War of course Nuclear Assault, Death Angel, Metal Church, King Diamond and perhaps I'm wrong but want to say Helloween but that might've been a different show and venue that I think the same friend and I had gotten dusted at. Some reason my mind thinks that around 15 bands played that hot AF day. I'm finding myself stuck and maybe because of my recent concussion that has me forgetful. There were a couple bands that I'd never heard but I might be able to find an old screen shot of the poster. I think it was at The Eagles Club or Ballroom and somewhere in Milwaukee. There were a lot of absent friends because the Grateful Dead were at Alpine Valley and whether you liked their music or not, no one had a better party scene. I am remembering bands that I know weren't there but I will say that with Grunge kneecapping the thrash, speed, death metal and the Crossover and hard-core punk scenes that I didn't get a chance to see too many other heavier bands when I moved to NC that December where we had almost no live music of any kind on the coast. When I moved back to the Midwest and had enlisted in the Army, I only recall seeing Suicidal Tendencies when they opened for Queensryche and a few smaller acts and then the stuff generalized as thrash could only rarely be caught in Minneapolis but while I was at Fort Sill, OK there was only pop country in those parts. Leon Russell was from that town originally but another vacuum of music existed there. But, after being spoiled for years between Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and the Twin Cities not many regions could compare. I'm off to try and find who else was on that bill. I am remembering that I moved about a week after Exodus, Anthrax(?), and Celtic Frost had played in Chicago. 85-87 were the peak years for heavy stuff in my book. Reign in Blood tour in February 87 at Aragon Ballroom, May/June 87 Megadeth and Overkill (Main acts) at the same venue. 86(?) had both King Diamond and Megadeth playing Kenosha at a club but I don't remember if they were the same bill or my imagination and so much more happened to come through or called the area home. Just checking back in, 2 posters exist for that day with some differences. One lists Fates Warning instead of Metal Church, Destruction is on both and Death Angel isn't but I know for a fact that Death Angel was filling Destruction's spot. Hallows Eve played so Helloween was probably my mistake. Zoetrope is listed on both, I don't remember if they were there but they were in my "Top 40" of the day. They were also listed on the June 5th, 87 Megadeth, Overkill, Necros bill but I just don't recall it being them but I was very toasted for that one. A few other bands were listed for the July 25th Milwaukee festival and the only other name that I do remember was Kubla Khan but I never heard them again, the name sticks though. Saw some other posters to include one with Zoetrope opening for Nuclear Assault in Chicago. Definitely Times were a changin' as hair metal kept getting stomped on. The "Thrash" movement was a purifying force and groups like Nuclear Assault, DRI, COC, and Metallica up to Master were some of those with a message. So much more to it.

      @@davidr1676 You were lucky to be there when the metal was hot like hell!

    • @davidr1676
      @davidr1676 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AgoraphobicNews there was so many more bands that played larger venues like Metallica did on the Ozzy tour, Ozzy/Metallica came through Chicago twice that tour and Metallica returned in between tour legs to play but then smaller venues like Aragon Ballroom and smaller like Eagles Clubs, The Thirsty Whale, and enough bars and even community centers that I couldn't begin to name them all. I didn't get my first car until December 87, needed one in NC, but that sucked because few metalheads, stoners, "burn outs" had reliable enough cars until our 20s and so when I lived in that area, I missed so much. I don't regret that when in NC that I started getting heavy into the Grateful Dead and other stuff like Pink Floyd but even into 1988 only Metallica was known in the region. I'd occasionally make a 45 minute drive to see if I could find any albums(tapes back then) and I recall that the first Danzig album was a surprising find. Otherwise metal there was the Ozzzy, Judaa Priest, Maiden, AC/DC flavor though unfortunately most metal fans were hair bands or what we called Posuers(sp?) and some were only counted as metal because of long hair, guitars, groupies, and cocaine habits. C.O.C. was a bit known there but because they were from the state. I still have their first release on some of the thickest vinyl I've ever had. Hand printed lyric sheet with other info. That was the pre-Animosity album and very raw. I remember discovering MDC, GBH, DOA, Agnostic Front, Life Sentence, Broken Bones while still around Chicago. Every night someone was playing though not always the heavier flavor though. The bands are harder to recall as I lost a bunch of Albums and tapes in an early 2000 move. Though, some pop back into my head. Sometimes I hear something that I haven't heard in 30+ years but the lyrics are still in my brain. I never developed much as a guitarist but had I had more self confidence I would've taken up the bass and sang or realized that not all guitar is scorching leads. 😆🙃

    I'm always too busy trying to injure myself in a drunken mosh frenzy to record anything.. kids these days eh, ('was' always too busy, I forgot I'm old now.) I remember seeing them in Glasgow around 89 with Dark Angel supporting, dislocated my knee in one of the wildest gigs I've been too, was a small venue called the Mayfair and before health and safety decided that everyone diving headfirst off the stage into a writing mass of lunatics wasn't safe enough.

I've listened to Game Over, and the Plague daily for years now. Handle With Care is also really good. I think that John sounds too much like Sam Kinison on Survive , but otherwise a decent album
