Probably the most informative video I've watched on the Maker 3 so far. Thanks for going into detail on how it works and what truly makes it different from the original Maker!
My Original Maker is about 6 years old and giving me print and cut issues... I ordered the Maker 3 because I need a new one, love the color and also cut faster 💛 thank you for this!
I just bought the Maker 3, have used the Maker for several years. I’m really excited to use all the different features. Thank you for your help. I am getting your book.
Thank you for this video ! I was so stumped as to what their differences are. I think I’m gonna go with the maker 3 because I want the option to go big with my projects
Thank you so much! This helped me make my decision. I received the original Maker for Christmas and I was debating exchanging for the 3, but it’s twice the price! Good to know that since I’ll only be using it for leisurely craft projects, it’s probably not worth it to pay for the upgrade. Thank you for your honesty. I’m also checking out your website- amazing resources! 🌺
Nice, honest, and unbiased video. Being that I have the Joy since it was released and have never felt or enjoyed the benefits of using smart material, the original Maker is calling my name.
Hi, thanks for your comparison. I am going to buy the original Maker as I want to cut paper and light card to make stencils for Pyrography and Dremel woodcarving as well as cutting lightweight leather for inserts for wallets, purses and other leatherwork items. I don’t see myself using Smart vinyls etc and am happy to use mats and wait a little longer for the machine to finish cutting. You have helped me to make this decision 😊❣️
Thank you! I was watching other videos and they made the original maker seem like it was not worth the money Thank you for clear differences on both machines.
Thank you so much for this video! I’ve been going back and forth about this. Although I like the idea of mat-less cutting and being able to cut larger projects I don’t think it would be worth the money (for myself) when the original Maker can do everything that the 3 can do. 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you for this video! I have the original Maker and I have been contemplating upgrading to the 3. This helped me decide that I am ok with staying with my Maker, for a few more months at least.
That was an excellent overview, exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I may go with the original Maker. I have a Joy and it’s ok for small projects but very wasteful when you use the “smart” materials. I also love the white/champagne color option. Color shouldn’t be a deciding factor lol but hey, I’m a crafter so colors matter. Thank you again.
Thanks for this video! It seems that for now, there's no real advantage to a maker 3 other than saving time with helpful shortcuts. As of now, maker 3 doesn't have any new features that really entice me to buy and replace my maker.
Not enough upgrades to justify the extra cost. I love my maker and might buy another one! I craft at my friends house and hate lugging it back and forth!
Question: I'm new to all cricut machines and I want one specifically to cut out designs with cardstock, for cardmaking and scrapbooking. What do you suggest?
So I opened my birthday gift on my birthday- September 11 and to my surprise my husband and 13 year old son bought me a Cricut Maker 3. So I guess I won’t be buying myself the original Cricut Maker it would make no sense, since I got a new Maker 3 for free.
Thanks so much, this video was very informative and exactly what I was looking for! My barely 3 year old Maker's grey rollers are constantly moving out of place. It's not under warranty so I am deciding between buying another Maker or getting the Maker 3. I have lots of regular vinyl I'd be using before I bought any Smart Vinyl (if I went with the M3). My biggest question is does the M3 improve the grey rollers life or are they at just as much risk of constantly moving out of place as the original Maker?
Maker 3 (I am owner) does not cut any faster when using mat, as far as I can tell cannot cut any thicker material than maker (please correct me if you know differently). I am very impressed with the print/cut feature which scans the print to confirm alignment before cut (I do not know if this is the same function for the maker). With the greatest respect please clarify 'amazing upgrades' other than a picture on the start button and a raised bit of plastic on the guide. The maker 3 can cut upto 12ft length I think that is about it.
I am looking into what machine to buy as a first time buyer but I'm not very impressed with the Maker 3. They lost me at not including some of the tools that come with the Maker. I'm disappointed the roll holder isn't compatible with the Maker but I've heard you can only use the Cricut Smart materials for matless cutting anyway. I don't like being forced to purchase only their brand, especially since I've heard their products are overpriced and not as good quality as some other brands. I'm tempted to go with the Silhouette Cameo 4 for some of the feature it has that the Maker lacks and sadly fall flat on the Maker 3. I've also heard the Silhouette software is better. My only reservation is how loud the Silhouette is. Wish there was a clearer answer. Weighing the pros and cons is driving me crazy.
@@marilockette I find the Cricut software frustrating, it tends to 'lead you by the hand' and is a bit over simplistic (Silhouette software is more flexible). I agree Circut material is overpriced, I mostly use a mat and other material. I would say the Cricut maker 3 machine is very good quality. To sum up I don't regret getting the maker 3. It is however expensive and tries to make you use Cricut materials, you can use other materials with a mat. Also the maker 3 only includes a basic blade out of the box (likely is you will have to buy the 'knife' and/or 'disk cutter' about £50 each) and a set of mats (£20) if its your first machine. It possibly depends what kind of projects you are planning to do and material you want to cut.
@@marilockette my MIL has a sillouette and she is considering a cricut now that i have one. I enjoy the simplicity of the cricut maker studio but i know some prefer the sillouette for its versatility, though that versatility comes with a bit more of a learning curve which tends to be very frustrating. Her sillouette is also VERY temperamental and decides when it does and doesn’t want to work. There’s been so many projects that went from 30 minutes to an hour worth of work. For what I wanted it for, the cricut maker is simple enough for what I need.
So I had to exchange my maker 3 birthday gift today. Only used it 3xs. Today I decided to use it and it had a red power button light that wouldn’t go away. Cricut said it’s defective. Hopefully this exchange I picked up today won’t malfunction!
That is exactly my thought , I have a feeling that the 3 will go under faster then the original , which will make it difficult to find those supplies. I don’t think the 3 is as popular as they hoped.
Thanks! My child stole my original Maker when they moved out, and they're creating some amazing art works with it. I had considered getting a Maker 3 (and possibly swapping with them so they have the latest machine), but neither of us sees a lot of advantages in the upgrade for what we want to do. As I reflected on it, I don't cut much thicker materials like wood or leather and while I liked them I really don't need the other special tools (score, perforate, etc.). Now I'm pretty convinced I will be getting the Joy Xtra instead. Thanks for the review!
Great video, I have the Cricut joy and im really enjoying it, ive been looking at the bigger machines and the price of the Maker original is a great price. I am only a beginner and will probably go with the original
I would actually prefer the rotary blade with housing and the mats to come with the maker 3. I now had to buy that separately and I was really annoyed of that. I don‘t just want to use smart Materials since they don‘t sell them in store where I live you just get it online
Would you plz plz plz make a video about all the cricut maker 3 tools and blades? I'm about to get it but I am still clueless about all those tools! Thanks! 😃
I’m still not sure. Excellent video but fabric can I just set it in a maker 3 or must it still be on a mat for cutting out 2 1/2” strips or even triangles and etc.?
Wow thanks you for posting this! As I still have an explore I’m looking to upgrade and use my explore for baking only!! I believe I am convinced maker is the best solution for my crafts!! Thank you again!! 🥰
Are the mats reusable? Is it not just a protective surface so the blade can cut completely through the material?. I am new at crafting and Cricut and I am interested in making gifts like personalized coffee mugs or wood items so I think the basic maker is good enough for me to begin with.
Great video on comparing Maker/3 features! I'm interested in if the cutting speed of 65 Lb to 110 Lb cover card stock is the same for both machines? (I don't believe white non-adhesive cardstock is available in a Smart Material). Many thanks, Sam
So much to learn! Do many decisions. After listening to many videos. I decided to go with the Maker. Especially since I found a nice sale at Joanne's right now. I love the idea of faster. But I have to be realistic and say I can deal with more time. I'm not a business after all. I'm just using it for my own needs and gift giving. After investing in the Joy and seeing how much easier it was to understand the program. I decided to get the cricut Maker. I currently own a Silhouette. I rarely use it. There is currently only $70 in price difference in New Zealand between the maker and maker 3. Would I better off with the 3 or original maker. I am looking to do iron on transfers on clothing at first and decals for glasses and mugs etc
How about the Cricut most useful for working with leather? What is the max. thickness the machine can handle, cut and or pass through? Have you ever used the debossing/embossing tip on dampened leather?
I can see this machine does more than I need but hmmm possibilities. I would like to cut wool fabric width of fabric 8” and length 10” to 54”. But strips if 1/8 - 1/4”. Would this be able to accomplish.

I have Cricut Explore Air 2 for 4 years now and it's starting to misfunction, with print and cut I put my image to a size I want and jt always prints bigger then the size I choose, and last night the print and cut feature kept giving me a error message. So I will be purchasing the Maker. Thank you for this video you made my decision easy.
Quick question making decals from my boat they are 3 1/2 feet long and 6 inches in height which machine will work best for my needs thank you and what a great video on the comparisons of both machines
Thank you so much very informative I’m going to buy it now. The maker 3, as I really couldn’t afford the other one. New subscriber here. Your content is so straightforward and to the point.
Hi! I just purchased my maker. My question is if you want to do larger vinyl projects, are you able to do those on the maker, or are you limited to what fits on the size of the mat? Thanks!
I have made larger items with my original Maker. But the max with is still 12” but you can go up to 24” in length. So I just rotate my image and cut that way.
This is exactly what I needed to know! Thank you very much! I was actually upset when Cricut launched the Maker 3! I thought the original Maker was the LAST machine that would be updated by software & different blades! I enjoy my Maker, but I now want to add the Maker 3! Lol 🤦♀️🤣
I have the maker and still confused On the machine…maybe I need to let it collect more dust lol…but seriously how can I use the Cricut maker using my Bluetooth
You have to turn your Bluetooth on your laptop and then turn your maker on and then let it search for the maker. When it finds it, it will list it. Double click on it and it will connect.
Thanks for the 411, and a quick video.I will probably go with the original Maker. Thank you again. The color options do make it a lot easier to make a decision. :)
I have the Cricut Maker, and no matter what I try it just won't cut properly. I've tried using brand new mats, brand new cutting blades, adjusting the pressure of the blade - but nothing. Despite using the correct thickness paper (or other material) and the correct blade for the task it just will not cut, or it only partially cuts or it just scores on the material instead of cutting through it. Sometimes if I increase the pressure when I am using card it will rip and macerate the paper in some parts and other parts it won't cut at all. I've had this machine as a Christmas present for 3 years coming up and used it just about 8 times and only on one time has it ever worked - just on paper!! There must be something seriously wrong with it.
I had issues with mine same as u when I first got I called customer service and put me in touch with there technical team and they did a upgrade with me walked me thru a re setup and I've never had no issues since I've had mine going on 5 years now and i use it all the time u wouldn't believe the things u can do with it when it works properly! Makes me sad u can't get it working right cause I know the possibilities are endless with it! Goodluck!
I'm going to buy a cricut maker I'm still confused which one to get. Maker or maker 3 😭 do I have to buy mats separately or do they come with the maker
You can use the same mats with both. The only reason you would not need a mat is if you have the Maker 3 and are using smart materials. The cricut site has a really good bundle on the original maker ($279 for the machine and a ton of materials)
This was super helpful. I feel like I might have bought the wrong unit. I bought the Cricut Air 2. I haven't used it yet, after watching this I feel like before I jump in and start using it I should exchange to the Maker... Any suggestions from everyone what to do? I am a beginner and haven't used it before but the things important to me would be quick, being able to make labels, and iron on's for t-shirts/sweatshirts for the next couple years.
Hi. Great comparison on both machines, I am a complete beginner on Circuit, a bit concerned that it might be too complex for me though😕 from what I can make out from your video The Circuit 3 sounds like the better machine, as it has many features. I wonder if you could please tell me, dose it cut Greyboard? Also I have a few decoupage sheets, if I put them through the maker 3 will it cut out the images? (Rather then using a Craft Knife I don’t do so well with a Craft Knife.
I have a Creality Falcon 2 40 Watt laser engraver and cutter. The one thing your not allowed to cut on a laser is Vinyl. It produces Chlorine gas which is very toxic. That is where the Cricut comes in. Since the Cricut does not produce heat while cutting.
When I was researching which cricut to get I chose the maker as it cuts so much more than the air2 and I knew eventually I would want to upgrade to a maker eventually.
Can you use cricut mat on new maker 3? I'm considering the new machine but would still like to use up all the non-smart vinyl I've purchased. Also can you use cardstock without the mat in the new machine? Hope those questions make sense. Thanks for the video!
Great video but why do creators work so hard to enunciate the “T” in “button” and “important” but then slide through all of the other “T” sounds? No exaggerated “T” sound in “cricut”, “expert”, “cut”, “fit” etc. No big deal but it sticks out when you pick and choose a few words to enunciate.
Yes. It drives me nuts when some of them say certain words like that. They almost talk robotic. I didn't notice it with this video, so it wasn't too bad, but sometimes I have to turn the volume down or just change the video, because that robotic voice drives me crazy. At least she didn't use up-speak. Just talk natural, people.

Thank you for the insite on both cricuts I'm definitely going to go with the original Maker 😁
Can normal Vinyl be used on these Machines or do you have to use the Vinyl it comes with as that will become pricey
I already have the original, the smart matless cutting is so cool. But I’m satisfied with my maker and what it does.
Thanks!
I would also like to know the answer to Erica Jones question from last month. I don't see a reply.
I have made larger items with my original Maker. But the max with is still 12” but you can go up to 24” in length. So I just rotate my image and cut that way.
Which cricut to use for infusible ink??
You can use any of them. The Joy, Maker series or Explore series machines.
This is exactly what I needed to know! Thank you very much! I was actually upset when Cricut launched the Maker 3! I thought the original Maker was the LAST machine that would be updated by software & different blades! I enjoy my Maker, but I now want to add the Maker 3! Lol 🤦♀️🤣
Hi, Will the Maker 3 cut shapes from a sheet of A2 cardboard?
Fabric, what is, if any, the difference between the maker and maker 3 when cutting fabric?
Thank you so much. I have a explorer 2 and have invested a lot of vinyl etc.. materials. Will I be able to use them on the cricut maker3?
I have the maker and still confused On the machine…maybe I need to let it collect more dust lol…but seriously how can I use the Cricut maker using my Bluetooth
You have to turn your Bluetooth on your laptop and then turn your maker on and then let it search for the maker. When it finds it, it will list it. Double click on it and it will connect.
Thank you for your video. It has helped me to decide which machine to buy .I have order you book to help me long the way.
I have both machines boxed sitting here.
Can you use the smart material on a mat on the maker?
This was SUPER helpful! Thank you!!
Thanks for the 411, and a quick video.I will probably go with the original Maker. Thank you again. The color options do make it a lot easier to make a decision. :)
You're not the only one. I still love your video.
Goodluck!
Can you crafters help me decide? I plan to make tshirts and eventually other things for my boutique, I am a beginner not sure which to choose
I'm mostly interested in cutting leather or template plastic for leather patterns. Not sure what one would be best for me.
Original will be perfect for you.
Is there any reason to get a maker 3 if I am cutting leather and fabric? the leather is fairly thin and ive been able to cut it on my Explorer Air
Thank you I think I going to Order the Maker 3.
I'm going to buy a cricut maker I'm still confused which one to get. Maker or maker 3 😭 do I have to buy mats separately or do they come with the maker
I hope someone replies to this. I just bought the maker today and wondering if I’ll need to buy a mat
You can use the same mats with both. The only reason you would not need a mat is if you have the Maker 3 and are using smart materials. The cricut site has a really good bundle on the original maker ($279 for the machine and a ton of materials)
@@katlynl7585 Thanks! I'm glad i stumbled onto your comment. :D I'm going to purchase the bundle!
@@ledaim7494 I got to open mine last week. So far so good! Came with everything I needed to get started ☺️
i still can’t decide because they’re both the same price right now on the website for $350ish. the only difference is the bundle package!
Which of these two cuts fabric faster or the same speed and thickness?
Does the roll holder come with the machine? If not where can you get it?
Thank you so much i was thinking about purchasing one today but i will get the maker
It does cut more and precise than that maker 1 one so if you want a better cutting experience then maker 3 is better.
Just get the maker 3 and you will be good for the next 5 years.
I have a Creality Falcon 2 40 Watt laser engraver and cutter. The one thing your not allowed to cut on a laser is Vinyl. It produces Chlorine gas which is very toxic. That is where the Cricut comes in. Since the Cricut does not produce heat while cutting.
I am asking for a circut for Christmas, a beginner at all this, and I am leaning towards the Explore Air2 or the Maker...any suggestions?
When I was researching which cricut to get I chose the maker as it cuts so much more than the air2 and I knew eventually I would want to upgrade to a maker eventually.
th-cam.com/video/nD8h7xgd-6g/w-d-xo.html. This video compares maker to explore.
Very helpful video. Thank you. I think the original maker will be fine for me, unless they have a great black Friday sale. 😂
The Maker 3 bundle is currently $99 and Maker bundle is $86 on their website right now! Discount ends in 8 hours
this was super helpful! thank you so much!
I was thinking of getting the maker 3 but did cricut update the software to design bigger as well since you can print bigger on the maker3?
I already have the Maker and I haven’t even mastered it so I think I will stay with it lol
Thank you, since it is my first one I decided on the original maker. I don't think I will use very much.
What exactly is a smart project?
I have the maker before the 3 and the only thing I want is the paper holder, with it could work with the prior makers
Can you use cricut mat on new maker 3? I'm considering the new machine but would still like to use up all the non-smart vinyl I've purchased. Also can you use cardstock without the mat in the new machine? Hope those questions make sense. Thanks for the video!
Yes, of course! You can still use your mats and all of the original materials. You can use smart cardstock in the new machine without the mat.
Very informative! Thank you! I have now subscribed to your channel :)
The cricut joy cuts the same kind of materials or only the "smart ones"?
The joys cuts both.. smart materials without a mat, and everything else with a mat.
Thank you for this comparison!
