Dave is singing along in the beginning and doing quite well, and then there is this look in his eye. Then she comes in and just knocks it out of the park like he heard in rehearsal.
The first time I heard this song I was just a kid. I'm 64 now, but I remember my pawpaw playing this on his old organ and singing the song. Like Emmylou Harris, he had that haunting quality to his voice and made that song a lifelong memory for me.
I'll always be so thankful that I got home from work just in time to find my Dad, mom and oldest brother sitting there watching this concert being broadcast live on TV that Sunday evening. Thankfully the concert had just begun so I didn't miss any of it. It was one of the greatest sweetest concerts I had ever seen. Unfortunately it was the last time we saw Johnny performing live and the last time we saw June. My dad pasted away a few years later and the only thing I was thankful for is that he didn't have to live long enough to survive Johnny Cash who passed away the following year. We knew if our dad had to survive the loss of Johnny Cash it would have crushed him. I have to believe he found my dad and they are together laughing over old stories and enjoying the music they both loved so much. Always in my Heart. I miss you both.
I watched the Johnny Cash tribute when it came on that evening, I think it was 1999. I never forgot this performance what a beautiful version, but nobody can beat Johnny Cash.
This concert circa '99 reignited my love for American Country, Blues, Southern Rock etc.. Every artist just blew it outta the water , not least these two. The Mavericks as house band were note perfect all through and when Johnny turned around at the end, the tears flowed .
These 2 are so powerful together and compliments each other's voice!!! what a musical pair, he's holding his part and she's holding hers!!! aw man, awesome, thnx to u both, this resonates deeply with me!!!!
When my granddaughter was 4yrs old and I was playing this song, she said "that's so sad ". Even a 4yr old cud feel it. I had Johnny Cash w/Emmylou's version. Ther contrasting voices made it so touching. I lost my husband when he was 23+I was 21. Why I "feel" t love +longing of T Long Black Veil. That Halloween I died my wedding Veil black + she and I went trick or treating w/me as t lady in this song. Hauting sound and memories 💔😭
these 2 artist entertainers, his deep as the earth n her voice flies higher than the clouds, they wrk PERFECT , they each can sing the poot out of this song, but together, oh wow, better than milk choc n yeollw cake mix when they R together, they make heat n BOOM ...... great music to u lips n these 2 R great music to u ears, hahaha !! great day everyone n SMILE BIG n don't mind helping another on God's planet be a better place for them n in turn u will be more Blessed for having a God giving Heart !! be safe, be helpful ,smile n enjoy the moment n have a great day !
It is truly a beautiful song. My vote for best country song is "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Most beautiful one, though, "Till I Can Gain Control Again".
@@genewisdom6478 I watched a show that rated greatest country songs and "He stopped Loving Her Today" as the best country song ever. I certainly think Marty Robbins' "At the end of a long, lonely day" is up there. It is one of the first country songs to address depression.
How can so many people complain about Emmlou Harris's performance? Her voice is so haunting and pure! It matches perfectly. Dave Matthews in comparison is lacking energy -_-
Nice Job Dave and nice back up Emmylou. I'll think of you both tonight as I perform this song in the Key of D along with my D harmonica on Broadway Street, Downtown Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Have i mentioned that im in awe, and completely obsessed with , and every other lovely glowing adjective that is not at the tip of my tongue, for this darling, fabulously talented man, at hte moment ....(or several moments, at least)
My dad met Frizzell. Back in the day, he and his siblings road all around Nebraska on a bus playing country standards. Eventually they made it out to Nashville to try and hit it big. They never did, but they met Lefty at the hotel they were staying at. Dad went to his room and played with him a bit, and watched him pound some booze. I've taken up the guitar and continued the tradition. Seeing your grandfather, a man who says little, let alone praise, tearyeyed....words fail to take shape.
This is a fantastic job, by 2 remarkable artists,...the previous negative comments are, from people who have no respect for talent,..and I'm sure Johnny would be proud of this version
@Bondidog I agree!! If an angel is singing, let us see her. She has been my favorite human being in show business since she made her first recording. Her voice is from heaven.
I've seen emmylou 3 times. Michigan Ave opera house, red rocks with the late great john prine and on the chicago lake front she did a duet with Mark knopler.
When it comes to female singers, regardless of genre, you simply cant get any better than Emmylou Harris
Joni Mitchell maybe ?
P. Cline.
never smart to state a best ever on the yootoob...but she is certainly amongst the very best of the very best
Dolly!
So missing Linda Ronstadt singing with Emmylou. Linda contracted a neurologic disease which took her beautiful voice.
DAVE AND THE WORLDS NO 1 FEMALE SINGER
Emmylou's voice is hauntingly beautiful and perfect for this song.
Love this song......Love Dave and Love Emmylou Harris.
God bless ......
Goosebumps when Emmylou breathes angelic life to those haunting cords! Moved to tears. This definitely hits hard.
Emmylou's voice sounds so ethereal and gorgeous. I still remember this performance years later and re-watch it often.
not only the voice, that's EMMYLOU!
I was at this show as a guest of Emmylou Harris. What an awesome night of entertainment! This song was my favourite of the lot
So beautiful broke my hart, she is magnificent ❤️
I've listened to so many renditions of this song, but Emmy Lou's ANGELIC VOICE makes this rendition stand out..above all the rest..!
I bought a 13 ft. Black Carbon Fiber Canoe... 38 lbs. I named her "Long Black Veil".....
This is my favorite rendition of Long Black Veil, and I've listened to a lot of them.

Check out the full DMB version from Listener Supported. It blows this out of the water.

Beyond beautiful ... this song has never been performed better, ever...

What a beautiful woman
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SONG AND WHAT A PAIR OF BEAUTIFUL SINGERS , THEY MAKE IT LOOK SO EASY ,
I love hearing different twists and arrangements to well known songs - this one hits the spot, and the rhythm and band are just perfect.
JCRS
Perfection. The instruments and the voices of these two created a haunting story. Love Dave and Emmy Lou.
Those drums are the finishing touch on this incredibly unique cover.

The best version i’ve ever listen of this song👏👏👏

I listen to this version quite a lot. Never get tired of beautiful music.
Me too Rob

I've always loved this song, but Emmylou's harmonies bring a completely new and wonderful dimension to it
This is such a beautiful old song, and both do it tremendous justice🦋

Best country song ever written in my humble opinion. What a story that this song tells.
It is truly a beautiful song. My vote for best country song is "He Stopped Loving Her Today". Most beautiful one, though, "Till I Can Gain Control Again".

What a genius pair¡! This song was destined to be mastered by these two, 😊together! 🎉😅❤
This performance hits me deep..
Sorry this is the best version I've heard except an Irish male solo version way back in the late Sixties who I have never had the chance to hear since
This version became one of my forever favorites I never tire of this version 💖 I have to hear it often!!
I love this rendition so much -- NEVER take it down, AWESOME!!!!
You must listen to Dave Matthews with Emmy Lou sing Long Black Veil!!
the harmony, the harmony, the harmony ... i cannot help it she always touch my soul.
Hello dear how are your day going over there with you? I hope you’re having a wonderful day
Emmylou is haunting!
Haunting, beautiful song - will be part of my life forever.
beautiful! I like how Dave really makes the song his own. Just beautiful
dave matthews is the man! saw him live a few months ago... it was just awesome
I love Dave's voice. It's so soothing.
My LORD, she can sing like an angel
Best version of so many good ones .
Emmy is a 👼 heaven sent to us to enjoy for awhile here on Earth
Everything she touches turns to gold.
Nobody but Dave and Emmylou could perform this song as chillingly as CASH. NOBODY!
I'd have to say give the original by Lefty Frizzell a listen. I think it's the best, but just about all of the versions bring tears to my eyes. ]=
@@TenshiB Lefty Frizzell sings it best I think
how could anyone ever thumbs down this ?
Emmylou, your gifts are endless, your music, your voice unrivaled. thank you, again and again.

I recall seeing this the first time. Awesome!! Thanks for sharing so we can see it all over again.
I love Dave & Johnny. Both versions are great. Ilove Emmy Lou on this... It adds a haunting quality. Thank you for posting this.
I love Dave's sheepish grin when he sings the lyrics - "I'd been in the arms of my best friend's wife" - he is dreamy!

Recorded this on vhs when this was first aired. Still great, emmylous voice is unreal
This is one the best versions of this song.
I am glad this is the first and only time I have heard Dave Matthews "sing".
Agree, one of the best covers.. Matthews and Harris really nail it.

This was 21 years ago. 21 years wow. The good stuff stays you know.

This song brings back childhood memories.

Great, great stuff. Thanks to whomever put this up.
WOW!!!!
If you want to hear Dave sing this really well, look for the Live at The Gorge DVD/CD
I've seen emmylou 3 times. Michigan Ave opera house, red rocks with the late great john prine and on the chicago lake front she did a duet with Mark knopler.
Great cover and, DAMN, Johnny Cash could write and sing a song.
originally performed by Lefty Frizzle, written by 2 others. -Wiki
Jim Weekley he certainly made it famous, but he didn’t write it.
Their voices work well together don't they? Dave Matthews rules.
Great link. Thanks. I really like this version.
emmylou is the best. thanks for this video
There stands two of the most adorable people ever. Great talent and taste.
Greets from Michigan!
