I hung a bug zapper lite over my plants and it started to zap them right away(what a great sound...made me smile!) After a few weeks, no more zaps were heard so I took them down. OVER A YEAR NOW & NO MORE GNATS! (still have the lites standing by in my closet just in case.) Good Luck! Rev. J 😊
I used to have a crazy amount of fungus gnats to the point I threw some plants due to infestation. Read somewhere about sticky pads which have been working for me and also, repotted all my plants in a very airy soil which dries every 3 days or so to give no chance for "adult gnats" to lay eggs. So far, been almost a year, and have been working for me.
Only top dressing the soil with potting sand or vermiculite the nat can't lay its eggs on that , this was told by our well known gardener here in Washington state , and he knows what he's talking about.
Actually, fungus gnats will also enter the bottom of pots through holes that make space available to them. I have watched them retreat into those holes at the bottom. I leave the top of my pots dry, watering only from the bottom, with Microbe-Lift mosquito control mixed into the water, plus the yellow sticky traps, cut to small strips for each pot.
From my plants that like to be dry for the most part I use it leca to cover the soil for my very moist tropical plants I use perlite please wear a mask if you decide to use that one. And for the propagation area very wet humid places I use sand! Great video keep it up
I just started watering with mosquito bits today...I hate fungus gnats 😡 I thought I had it under control with the sticky traps and not watering. Now they have hatched. Thanks for sharing this had helped! 😃
I use craft adhesive spray on yellow plastic, sourced from old office folio covers. Cheap as. I have indoor and outdoor plants, 12 storeys up, my neighbour has a huge outdoor garden, cheap soil is also a carrier. I'm thinking of growing in water only. The ones I have no pest problems.
I bought orchid mix at Lowe’s and they were in there. So I threw the dirt out in the garden. And I bought a couple of violets and brought them in too. So I put fly strip traps attached to plant stand each level, all good. And watched water also. Thanks
what did you do to our "rambling" Nicky?! The video/presentation was quite concise, straightforward, dare I say organised... 😉 I like both styles, but this more organised way of conveying the info really lends itself to the new "101 series". Congrats
I’ve never heard of butterwort 🌿it’s a cute little plant and it looks like it does the job. I’m going to inquire about it next time I plant shop. I was thinking of mosquito bits, but not really anxious to purchase another pest prevention item; going with my DE and bottom watering.
I never had them until I used potting soil ! I have a inside avocado tree. That's where they are. The avocado loves water. Does not do well without all the water it wants.
You can yes, but they don't usually burrow down to far so depending on the pot size it may or may not be worth it. They work best when on the top or diluted in water.
Actually, fungus gnats do kill plant roots, especially young plants, seedlings and cuttings. I have lost most of my new plants that I have just purchased, as as most of my succulents and smaller house plants. I have tried withholding water from most of my plants to the point of wilting, and when I scratch the surface a few centimetres deep, and out fly brand new fungus gnats! It is summer here in subtropical Australia and the humidity is causing an outbreak. This is the worse plague that we have ever had.
They are annoying, but hey people, Fungus Gnats have rights too, right? I don't think you can eradicate them, but they go along with plant keeping so I try to just keep the numbers down. I think it's a good sign that our soil is healthy too. They don't do a lot of damage but horrible when you get one up your nose! 😂 Great video Nicky! ♥️
Vinager apple cider fruit fly trap mix liked my favorite plant cause it tipped over been using mosquitoe bits and neem oil just for a sample of something new I'll let you guys know how it works and with the bits make a ya the night b4 with hot water shake it let it cool down the heat brings out the pesticides and I also been mixing cold pressed neem oil with the bits
Thankyou for this, got mosquito bits, but then all my gnats went away 😂😂 grrr...before that every time I had wine, two or 3 dive bombed into it, so I gave them that glass and got my own! Little f’ers! But it worked, by morning there were 30 of them!
Buy real sticky traps, the diy stuff doesn't work. Use with the mosquito bits on the soil. You need both. Remember it may take 30 days to get everything under control. Fungus gnats will not go into cider vinegar or wine . That only works on fruit flies. Look up the life cycle of a fungus gnat before you do anything else.
I think the hydrogen peroxide approach may be good for destroying the fungus and denying the larva food. I don’t do it. Mosquito Bits tea works, don’t spread the granules on top of your soil because it is food (see your section on not putting food on top) it gets fungusy and provides a treat for flys and it stinks too. I use sticky traps and the electronic Catchy traps they certainly work.
do you have a top 10 easiest plants video? I don't have the best humidity and I'm trying to decide between a splendid, verrucosum, and an el choco red.
@@PlantsPotsWhatNots they're pretty prolific at the moment damn things 😂😂 ps thanks so much for your videos I look forward to each and every one of them 😊
Diatomaceous earth and yellow stickies is what I used last year that finally worked. I brought in over 200 plants( annuals) to propagate and over winter trying to save myself some money 🤦♀️ and by the end of November I had a huge infestation. I think I probably spent a small fortune buying everything recommended to try and eradicate the little buggers. It was awful 😖. I have over 180 houseplants still in the house and I have a handle on them and know what to avoid to keep them at bay. ( I did not bring any annuals in this year 🤪) I also now realize that having plants = having at least a few fungus gnats 🤷♀️ 🪴🪴🪰 🪰 so I try not to panic when I see one flying around 😜
Fungus gnats don't care for vinegar and soap. here they don`t for sure . helps on fruit flies. A electric mosquito/blackflies trap is very effective to get all adults
Dont feel bad they did it first I feel like a devil when I see so much on those sticky stick when they fly near i blow air so they get on it and scream DIE then laugh like a maniac 😅😈
Interesting, but my problem is my outdoor plants 🪴 I’ve sprayed with loads of different items ( homemade) nothing working as yet. We get sooo much rain in Ireland. 🥲
Great info Nicki thx. I love the diy sticky trap idea cuz it never fails I get stuck to those damn things every time lol and twice two of my poor cats got stuck on them😿😅 I bought this cool thing on amazon called Katchy indoor insect and flying bug trap, the uv light attracts them then sucks them down to a sticky trap and it freakin works haha i love looking at it and seeing all the eggs i just prevented from being laid 🍳
101 Wednesdays sounds great! I love this idea! I'm so excited to see what kind of 101's you come up with. I will be sure to watch whatever they are. I love how you just threw a banana on top of your plant! LMBO You are hilarious!
I love you thank you so much. I follow a group on FB called Arizona House Plants and Soooo Many people have posted their frustrations. I posted this video on this site so fast!! Thank You Thank You Thank You!!

Lol anytime Hun! They are definitely a pain in the rear!!
They didn't work for me, and they are very expensive to buy here in England, so I was disappointed
I have several butterworts around my plants and there taking care of those pests. Just love them.
Yes!! Me too!!! 🥰🥰

Mosquito bits. I top a bit on all my pots and I never get them anymore
Yes! That's awesome! Apparently they work like a charm.
I bought orchid mix at Lowe’s and they were in there. So I threw the dirt out in the garden. And I bought a couple of violets and brought them in too. So I put fly strip traps attached to plant stand each level, all good. And watched water also. Thanks

🤣🤣🤣 Yes, I was trying to be a little more informational and not so rambley. 😂
if using wire wool, do that with the bottom watering method as it will get rusty very quick
Very true!!

butterworts are awesome and have nice flowers too :) and nice and compact so dont take up much room
They are amazing little plants and the multiply quite quickly!
I never had them until I used potting soil ! I have a inside avocado tree. That's where they are. The avocado loves water. Does not do well without all the water it wants.
carolyn palmer can you mix the bits in your soil container so when you repot it's already in there
You can yes, but they don't usually burrow down to far so depending on the pot size it may or may not be worth it. They work best when on the top or diluted in water.
Fungas gnats have literally made me question my plant parenthood journey, is it worth it ugh
Lolol That's me with Thrips. 😖
I’m actually done with mine!

Lol definitely! And the amount of wine I've thrown out over the years due to them falling in my glass is crazy. 😂😂

Or you could spinkel cinnamon on top of the soil. Hugs from Norway 😊
I actually tried that, and usually what that's great for is killing the fungus, giving the fungus gnats less to feed on.
Old red wine in bottle caps worked for me. Just rinse out the cap and throw it in the recycling when done.
Great idea!!
This was a great video since I have a few more plants this year .
Oh good Hun!! I'm glad you found it helpful! 🥰
Great informational video. Do lizards eat these? I have hundreds of lizards on my patio.
I'm not sure actually. They are quite small, but I'm sure they would if they could grab them.
Hey lady! Thanks, hadn't heard of Butter wart, going to try to acquire some! Your so helpful as always, appreciate you!
You definitely should! They are super cool little plants!
There's this thing called composting.. You should look it up.
Oh boy I’m so glad I was eating just as you said they’re trying to lay eggs in my body....
Eak!! Lol not good timing! Lol
Thank you, super helpful video! I really want to get a few butterwort now 🥰💚💚💚

That’s what I use for mine butterwart & sundew ,only thing is I am in U.K. & mine seem to sleep in winter,

I don't have an easiest 'rare' plant video yet, but, if you're looking for easy if care out of those three, I would definitely go with the splendid.
i currently have 3 of them playing king of the hill with my nostrills lol
Omg!! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 That's not good!

The pic on this video is hilarious no you didn’t girl I’m laughing out loud 😂🤣 ugh you crack me up 😂
Lol I thought it was worth a giggle. 🤣🤣
@@PlantsPotsWhatNots definitely 🥰😂
I put up yellow tape for a couple days but drowning them in rubbing alcohol is soothing Lol
I use, Garden Safe insecticidal soap, Insect killer, I buy it from Lowes.
I tried to make my own sticky traps with vaseline and not one gnat died on those. Sticky traps work.
Oh really? Sorry it didn't work for you Hun..
I love the carnivorous plants ideas.
They work amazingly well and they are much more fun! Lol

I use a systemic, seems to work for everything, just have to reapply. 😊
Those are banned in Canada...so... :( We have to get a little more creative unfortunately. :(
