Unboxing the iPhone 12 Pro in Pacific Blue: What color is it REALLY?? And what's up with MagSafe?

- Wondering what the iPhone 12 Pro in Pacific Blue actually looks like? And how the iPhone 12 Pro compares to the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro? And what’s up with MagSafe? Check out my unboxing and hands on review to find out!
Initial impressions of the iPhone 12 Pro…we have a very premium look here. The highly polished stainless steel sides really catch the eye. And I’m loving the way the doesn’t curve--it is going to make screen protectors so much easier!!
Unsurprisingly, we have a new chip in the iPhone 12 series-the A14 Bionic Chip. And of course we finally have 5G, although only iPhones purchased in the US will get the super fast mmwave form of 5G. Phones purchased in other countries will only be able to use sub6-the slower kind of 5G. And of course if no 5G is available in your area, then 4G LTE will work just fine.
The screen is beautifully bright--same brightness as last year-Apple calls this a Super XDR Retina Display. And it is OLED, like last year. Even the non pro iPhone 12s are OLED this year…no more LCD screens. And the screen is now made of material called Ceramic Shield-it is a special kind of glass that has ceramic infused into it…and the result is a material that is not even technically considered ‘glass’ anymore-I guess that’s why they call it Ceramic Shield-and it will give you 4 times better drop performance as compared with the iPhone 11 Pro screens. That’s a major step up! It’s important to note that Apple didn’t say anything about improved scratch resistance, only improved drop performance, so I’m definitely planning on continuing to use a screen protector with this beautiful phone.
Our front camera is basically the same as last year, from what I understand, but it does have the addition of Night Mode and something called Deep Fusion.
We have a 6.1 inch screen on the Pro this year-which is larger than the Pro screen size last year-and I have to say that when I originally heard that the 12 Pro was going to have a 6.1 screen, I was really worried that the phone was going to be too big. However, because the bezels are smaller on the 12 Pro, you get a noticeably larger screen for only a tiny bit bigger phone size.
Looking at the back, the color is just stunning. Such a pretty color of blue! I’m still not sure what to call it, though. Teal blue, blue green, ocean blue, slate blue, grey blue, sky blue, sea blue, cerulean blue, dark cyan blue…You tell me in the comments what color you think it is!!
We have a matte glass on the back of the phone, just like the pro models last year. It feels great to touch and is much more fingerprint resistant than a glossy finish glass.
And just like last year, the camera square still sticks out a little. The camera is supposed to be noticeably better this year-we get a new LIDAR sensor, it does Night Mode Portraits, and there is something called Apple ProRAW, and there are a few more bells and whistles in the video recording area-night mode time lapse and HDR Video Recording with Dolby Vision-but we still have the same ultrawide, wide and telephoto lenses as last year and the same amount of optical zoom.
We have an increased amount of water resistance-a truly impressive IP68 rating. The phone is rated to survive up to 30 minutes of immersion at a 6 meter depth…although it is important to note that Apple does say this water resistance may decline over time and that water damage to your phone is not covered under warranty! So if you are planning to swim with your phone, I would advise putting it in a waterproof case!
MagSafe charging technology uses a ring of implanted magnets in the phone to attach on to the MagSafe charger perfectly…every time...to give you super fast 15 watt wireless charging. That’s twice as fast as the 7.5 watts that iPhones normally wirelessly charge at, although not as fast as you are going to get if you plug in your iPhone to charge with the 20 watt USB-C charger that Apple recommends you buy.
I’m loving the size of the MagSafe charger-it’s larger than an Apple Watch charger, but not too bad, And because it sticks on to the back of your phone, you can continue to use your phone normally while charging. And the click that it makes when it connects with the sweet spot on the iPhone is really satisfying! Of course, the introduction of MagSafe is really shaking up the case industry-to get a MagSafe case, you currently have to either go with an Apple case or buy one of OtterBox’s MagSafe cases-they are the only official third party MagSafe case supplier so far. But I’m sure that will change soon..

Yeah, probably so. And it really is a great color! I was in an Apple Store today and went over to look at the colors of the iPhone 12, because I am planning to get the 12 mini as well. All the colors are kind of awful except for the blue. The blue is great. And the white and the black are good too, of course. But the red is sort of orangy, and the green is washed out. Really unfortunate--the colors on the iPhone 11 were much nicer...

@Language Lab well I have the space gray iPhone 11 Pro Max. I’ve always chosen the gold or space gray for years. The last time I had a silver iPhone was when I had the iPhone 5S lol so I figured since I already have a bigger phone and that normal color let me do something different this year. So I went with the silver.
I hear you on the silver. I absolutely loved my 11 Pro in silver. It looked great with every case, and always had a fresh, clean look to it. I'm going to miss it!!
@Mritunjoy Takhellambam because it’s my money, and I wanted a smaller device. It’s what I wanted. That’s why I got it. I didn’t upgrade...I’m keeping my iPhone 11 Pro Max and added an additional device to my collection. One for business one for personal.

My kids have iPhones and I like having everything synced with iCloud etc. my iPhone 11 Pro Max is an amazing device that’s why I chose to keep it lol but with my phone being a big part of my day I’d prefer a smaller device to handle everything. I have to use 2 hands with my pro Max. Lol 😂
@GunsandGlamour, I used to always have the Plus size phones, and then when the iPhone X came out, I fell in love with that size. So easy to carry everywhere, but still big enough to be fully usable. So I totally understand your desire for a smaller phone!
I've actually been very worried about the 12 Pro's size, ever since I heard that the 12 Pro was going to have a 6.1 inch screen, because I didn't want it to be any larger than my 11 Pro. But it turns out that the increase is size is truly tiny...I'm so relieved!

I don't really agree Magsafe should be included, but they should have at least given us the fast charging brick. They only included this ONCE, with the 11 Pro last year. Majority of people upgrading, like myself, aren't coming from an 11 Pro and will have to shell out another $19 for it. Not the end of the world and I appreciate Apple's environmental goals, but they should have included the brick for at least one more year.
Yes, at a bare minimum they should have given us the fast charging power adapter. Totally agree with you there.

Not having a power adapter is a scam...
Yeah, to be honest, if the charging cable that they included hadn't been lightning to USB-C (thus not working with all those 5 watt iPhone power adapters everyone has), then their logic might have made a little sense. But the way they did it, they are essentially forcing people to buy a fast USB-C charger, and/or a MagSafe charger. Their only other options to charge their new phone are to use an old lightning cable and old 5 watt charger to charge slowly, or use a wireless charger they might already have.

Hi Sampath! I don't have the regular 12...just the 12 Pro. The camera is the big difference between the two, and the stainless steel sides and matte glass back versus aluminum and glossy glass back for the regular 12. The 12 Pro looks higher end, but it is also heavier than the 12 due to the stainless steel sides. I think the choice comes down to personal preference...

Hi Christa! I'm absolutely loving my Pacific Blue 12 Pro, but I will say that it lessens your ability to match color-wise with cases. I have the 12 Pro Max in Silver, and it looks fantastic with every case you put it in. However, keep in mind that if you care about people being able to see that you have the latest iPhone version, you might want to go with Pacific Blue rather than Silver or Gold. Good luck with your decision!

I’m loving it, Fazil. They have packed a larger screen into the phone and while it is very slightly larger than the 11 Pro, it doesn’t feel like it. And it is a little bit thinner, so overall it feels smaller. Great phone!!

Oh, I disagree. The midnight green was a completely different color. I really disliked the midnight green, and went with silver for my iPhone 11 Pro instead. The Pacific Blue is a lovely color 😀

Great review. Pacific blue, I think is like the Pacific Ocean which is closest to Cupertino, California where the iPhone is designed at the beautiful Apple headquarter the circular building called Apple Park. I love when you explain every detail like fingerprint, slippery or not and tactile buttons. I’m getting Pacific Blue in the Max. I’m female and wondered if another female would like it...finally a word from us ladies! Thank you.

Which phone is handy comfirt 11pro or 12pro
The 12 Pro feels more secure in the hand due to the flatter, squarer edges...but if you don't use it with a case, I suppose those edges might feel a little sharp against your palm after a while. Personally, I always use a case, and so I definitely prefer the 12 Pro. Thanks for watching!

Is it very slippery to hold without a case? I can not use my 11 Pro Max without a case because it is too slippery. I am planning on using the 12 Pro Max with no case since the iPhone 5 was nice without a case, but the size of the Pro Max might make it a bad idea.
I think the squared off edges will make it easier to hold without a case, but I'm definitely going to always use a case. Because I am a case reviewer 😀
I just got a 12 pro today and it’s literally so pretty I can’t stop taking off the case. Nice and heavy too. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep it for the next 5-8 years

Ummm...I have a question: given mm wave frequency can easily be blocked by even a small obstacle like your hand, wouldn’t any type of case block the 5G reception on phone? Or, are the case specifically designed around the cut-out for 5G reception?

@@TheTechReviewer : Thats all okay. I was just intrigue how Apple has thought of work around mm wave frequency for 5G connectivity. I watched the reviews of 5G testing in US (Chicago) where the reviewers were testing the 5G speed right under the tower.

Yeah, mmWave 5G has a really short range, unlike Sub6 5G. Not that useful in a lot of areas, but cool.
Well, no mmWave 5G for me in China this year either, unfortunately. Maybe next year!

Regarding 5G, yes, I learnt 5G iPhone are made available only for US market. We can expect Apple to roll out 5G iPhones maybe in the next year.
No problem. Your assumption was actually correct--I'm American and ordinarily I do live in the US. But I have been living in Shanghai since 2017 because of my husband's job 😀

Oh yes. There is a slight curve to the edge of the screen, just past the viewable area, and it makes edge to edge screen protectors hard to design and install.
Glad I didn't get it. I currently have an s9 so I am over curved screens
Yeah, the Galaxy phones go pretty crazy for the curved screens and so screen protectors are miserable there. The fact that the iPhone 12/ 12 Pro has a flat screen is very much appreciated!!

It is really much nicer than I had hoped! I was so excited about the Midnight Green last year, but then was bitterly disappointed by the actual color, and I was worried that the Pacific Blue might fail me as well, but I have been so pleased with it! And I love the new design of the phone...so perfect! Now it's time to review some cases :-)
It is blue like the blue you find in the Pacific Ocean hence the name
