  • EPIC GEOLOGICAL EVENT, Most watch this footage to understand what happened to one the biggest waterfalls in Ecuador, it was surprising to witness this huge geological change. The volcan reventador next to the Rio Quijos had formed a gigantic natural dam many centuries ago and the river had been carving this rocks non stop until it found its way back through the original river bed. The footage here shown is from the day after the collapse of the waterfall, looking at aerial pictures from the well known ecuadorian photographer Jorge Anhalzer just a couple days later, the erosion of the river bed had moved several hundred meters upstream. The most interesting thoughts came to my mind when I saw this erosion rate been so fast and moving upstream towards the largest hydroelectric project in Ecuador called COCA CODO SYNCLAIR, just 5km upstream from this old basalt and volcanic dam. The river below the dam is turned into a massive mud channel and definetelly affected the geology and the nature of the river bed. Here we can see the none or little studies were made to place this monster project in that spot, considering that is rite next to one of the most active volcanoes in the world and in some of the most unstable geology you can find around. We hope the project stays intact as it ensures that the upper sections of the QUIJOS river stay untouched to ensure the flows this project need to work. Is the only good thing about this project really , we live on the upper AMAZON watershed and the road access is brought a lot of hydroelectric proposals that can't go on since the COCA CODO SYNCLAIR requires all the water in this rivers we call home. Little by little streams and creeks keep disappearing, used mostly as drinking water for the big city ( QUITO) where the overpopulation has created a massive demand of water. The problems we see in the future start with the diversion of rivers towards the west side of the mountains. And we have so much water on the Eastern slopes that never thought about lacking water, but we need to start moving forward to preserve our rivers and creeks.
Fuente @ElComercio.
