KPTLT. Siegfried Ludden. Commander of U-188. I am the proud owner of his inscribed U-Boat Ring. He must have been a very big guy, because the Ring is Size 11. Inside is marked KSL U-188. All three of these men were outstanding leaders. Imagine having the responsibility for 55-60 men and being less than 3o years old. Remarkable!
He commanded the U-188 for two years of which 356 days were at sea on patrol. He sunk a total of 9 ships of which one was a warship (the HMS Beverley). He was promoted after his death to Korvettenkapitän.
Yes. War is very much a young man's game. The conditions you are serving under are often severe and you need the resiliency of youth to do it. On Guadalcanal - they had a lot of long service Marine NCO's but these older men - though highly experienced - did not hold up well in the jungle climate of these Pacific Islands and most of them were soon sent home. In his book _Touched With Fire_ , Eric M. Bergerud noted that as soon as a unit was committed to the jungle - it was start to kill it and 90 days later - whether that unit had seen any combat or not - it had to be withdrawn and reconstituted. John F. Kennedy - waived his Survivors Leave after the 109 boat was sunk and commanded another one. Some of the actions in the movie - were IRL on this second boat - but the movie was named _PT-109_ so ... they just had it all happen on the 109. What got Kennedy sent home was all the tropical diseases he'd gotten. Doctors just sent him home where he was in the hospital for some months. When he was well enough to be released from the Hospital - the Navy released him from service. He was still to messed up physically to be sent out there again. Given what is going to happen to the people they send - they want them to be in good shape to start with. Being released like this from continued military service by people who had become casualties some how - was not uncommon in the US. We had enough people to that we didn't want to waste the resources needed to commit them if they weren't going to last very long. Germany didn't have enough people so they kept sending out those who were still not recovered and actually had units based on the types of problems the people in them had. That way - the medical people attached to the unit would be familiar with the types of problems those people had. .
I red a book about The Chindits. and how the doctors could not tell what was wrong with most of the patients. I think they wrote on the medical records something like virus of unknown origin. Basically the soldiers where that sick with most if not all of the disseises and viruses. The scary thing is that most wanted to carry on the fight. If I have a cold going to the shop at the end of the road is to much lol. Different times eh?
The U-boat pens along the west coast of France (La Pallice etc.) were far more important in German submarine efforts than the Baltic theatre after they were constructed following the defeat of France. By the time the facilities at Keil had been completed the war in the Atlantic had swung over in the Allies favour - May 1943 the decisive month when Doenitz lost 41 boats and was forced to withdraw from the key operational areas.
Pick a system; metric or imperial. Mentioning both is tedeous. Also, round to the nearest foot or meter; reciting to the second decimal place is also tedious. Finally, the deaths of 3 Uboat commanders is not a tragedy.
Should never blown up this U-Boat base. It should of repurposed as a American naval base of some sort. Now nuclear submarines sit in the open vulnerable to attack. They should of seen Russia as their new enemy which they are today.

So much for being magnanimous in victory . Did British have time and money for this bitterness?

Who would’ve thought a movie would take out those commanders.

Apologies for the typo's above but I'm to tired to fix them just now.

Appreciate you watching and have a great weekend :)
The quirks of War , or was it sabotage ?

There is no way a modern sub would fit into those old submarine bunkers. Today the area is used for making ships including submarines.
Good reply thanks. @@KjartanAndersen
Patton did got in a lot of trouble for voicing it
Yes there we go.@@danhigbee2283
Should “have” mate, not should of. 😢
My guy👍👍
Pick a measurement standard and go with it, incessantly reciting 2 different standards is beyond annoying.
