I've done this on my own acoustic, and discovered a few things, and learned a few things from luthiers and other experts. First, since you're using a magnetic pickup, use electric guitar strings. They sound better. Second, some guitars have access holes already drilled when the end pin strap button is located. You can remove the strap button and install a regular jack and strap button combo. If you want to change it back, just remove the jack and replace it with the original plug. It's real easy to fabricate a cable that's soldered to the end pin jack on one end and an 1/8th in plug on the other. You can also buy short cables with an 1/8th inch plug on one end and a 1/4 inch jack on the other, with a flap on the jack that goes on your strap button. Put the flap on first, then your strap, then a strap lock. Use a little low-residue tape to stick the skinny cable to your pickguard out of the way. This video is from 2016. Since then, there are some new soundhole pickups that also have volume and tone controls built in. LR Baggs even makes one with a built-in preamp powered by one of those batteries the size of a 25¢ piece.
This is exactly what i want. I prefer to have a wire sticking out regardless of how ridiculous it looks than to drill a hole on my guitar lol. Very helpful.
They've come a long way since the 1970s when they were wood and came in a little black bag with gold sinch straps.Dean Markley and others. The cords that came on those were really easy to mess up.
Great demo Tony! Question: Would acoustic percussion (tapping and drumming on the body) still produce a clean and warm sound? Or is it only the strings that gets picked up?
Hey 7 of 9, you got a Borg bionic pinky? Looks good. Thanks for the video, I've cut a body in two, reduced its size a bit, and now I can split that guitar. Right now I'm tinkering nuts and bolts, for a tight fit. I'm gonna put in a simple piezo pickup, for nylon strings. And also a nice modern neck pickup, for light electric strings. I hope there'll be some resonance left in that modified body. And I wonder what Signor Gomez would think about this project. The idea is something between a Spanish and a simple hollow body electric guitar. I'm lacking tools, so it's a lot of good old handwork. Sawing by hand, drilling by hand, adjusting drill holes using a file. But one day, perhaps next weeekend, I'll be able to install my neck pickup in the soundhole. Thanks for sharing this solution.
Hi, 1)is it possible to directly plug the sound-hole pick up to the recording interface? (in my case i use a zoom H4n) 2) What do you think about the Duncan Seymour Woody XL? Cheers,
Does the cord comes with the pickup itself ? or you had to buy it separately ? I was looking for a neo D fishman humbucker pickup on Amazon and didn't show any cable with it!. Plz answer i am really confused.
what about amplification? does the pickup wire goes to a electric guitar amplifier or a computer? can we directly feed it to computer audio jack and get high quality studio sound?
Has anyone ever done a modification for adding a sound hole pickup with the OEM/3rd party upgrade saddle/bridge pickup, with also installing a Gibson style 3 Position toggle that allows for either Rhythm, Treble or both pickups to be active on an acoustic electric. Similar to a semi-hollow arch top Gibson Les Paul ? And to up the ante on degree of difficulty, rather than the traditional center sound hole, let's do this to an Ovation that has the sound holes on either upper or both upper & lower sides of the top/soundboard ? Would dual active pickups even work without feedback issues plugged in ?
What types of pickups will I need that do require drilling into the guitar? I've had it since I was 11 and there's a dent on the side. I figured that would be a perfect place to put the hardware. Then I get pickups and remove an eyesore. Two birds.
i installed soundhole pickup and wired its cable to the guitar input socket to avoid the unsightly dangling cord coming out of the soundhole. so because the cord is inside the guitar body, there is an annoying buzzing sound when i play the guitar. how to solve this?
That Martin is truly beautiful! Super Jealous! I've been thinking about getting a black angel, I really like that the wire is removable, my main acoustic i play has a piezo, but I want some variety in options, though one day i want to find someone who can wire in a soundhole pickup to the guitars current electronics, and a selector switch :D
Hi Tony. Thanks for the video. I’m going to follow your tutorial and then tape the cable down on the body of the guitar. I’m concerned about damage to the varnish. I have a Martin D35. Any suggestions about good non-damaging tape products, please? Thanks brother
Some medical tapes especially paper ones have very weak water soluble adhesives because theyre used on skin. Also there are entirely non adhesive bondage tapes that sticks to itself and nothing else.
I am glad you asked this question :-) Magnetic soundhole pickups don't work very well with nylon stringed instruments due to the string composition. I would recommend a piezo type pickup or even a bridgeplate transducer style pickup for a classical :-)
Hey Thanks 4 the video Tony ! Tony ,can you tell me if its possible that i switch or cut off my Under Saddle Piezo pickup and connect wires to some Tranducer Pickups and have them still being controlled by my guitar's EQ Module ?
I'm gonna get a lipstick pickup and wire it to a output to be able to plug up my own guitar cable to the guitar. I wanna do this because I love the lipstick pickup's sound and it's looks cool.
Hi tony my guitar preamp stopped working is it expensive to fix this problem or should I install a sound hole pickup thanksits an estabon guitar since then i bought a martin dsr1
Hello Can i plug the pickup with magnetic\microphone (for example:Harley Benton TrueTone SH-30 Pro Active) directly into the mixer Dynacord (analog or digital etc) and that the guitar sound comes out to the speakers connected to the mixer? > Or do l need some accessories? (Guitar amps, Preamps)
Wait what? you can add a pick up but you have to use a really thin and flimsy cord that comes out of the sound hole to play with it? Am i the only person who's never seen anybody do that ever, i though you'd have to wire that shit though the body and out of the jack input.
But would it interfere with the sound of the guitar? I'll be purchasing my first guitar in a couple of days and just thought i might be better off with an electric-acoustic, since i'll be playing on stage occasionally, than a regular acoustic guitar but do they essentially sound the same after i install the pickup on the acoustic guitar?
My acoustic guitar had a pickup already installed in it and it was beneath the bridge but the pickup got messed up so i bought a sound hole pickup and laced it through the body and cut the wire coming from in and wired it to my preamp in my guitar and it’s “permanent” but it works and it sounds great, and you just plug it up in the previous hole that you used for the old pick up
Hi, I have 2 questions about this soundhole pickups (Dimarzio, LR BAggs, Saymour Duncan), if you can help me. First, they works with a normal steel strings, or only nickel strings? Finely, you think is possible to use them in a "silent guitar project" without acoustic body like a yamaha silent? Thank's for the great videos!
+Natalie Butler You can keep it in, but I would be very careful of the chord hanging out of the front of the guitar. There is nothing wrong with keeping it installed, as long as you put the access cable somewhere OR you can unplug the other end from the guitar... then it would truly be plug and play :-)
Hello. Awesome great video. My question is. I play a left hand guitar. Are these pickup's reversible? Or will I have to find a lefty one instead? Thanks in advance for any advice given.
I want to say a lefty version is available, but if not you can always install it to match your strings. It may just look a bit odd, but it will perform just fine :-)
Willie, I have 3 Sons who are taking Guitar in School. There are 3 Left Handed Kids and they don’t have any left handed Guitars. All the Kids have to learn right handed. Never heard this before.
@@silkcustoms520 Hi Butch Cassady. I have a left handed banjitar five left handed acoustic guitars a left hand mandolin a left hand electric guitar and one left handed violin. Thanks for sharing! I appreciate all you do! Any suggestions on my E string tuner is pretty stuck so I was wondering if I could use something to loosen up? The metal part is kind of hard to turn and tune the string. Thanks!

+Duane Capulla There are a couple that are quite good at a reasonable price. The DiMarzio Black Angel soundhole pickup is fantastic both for tone and price. On the other end of the spectrum Dean Markley makes a soundhole pickup that is fairly inexpensive and will allow you to plug in. Granted the Dean Markley pickup isn't the best sounding in my opinion, but it does give you that option to plug in. I hope that helps :-)
Very grateful to you for making this video. No longer will I be the only unamplified guitar at my local Open Mic event. Cheers

To bad they don't come wireless the cord hanging out of the soundhole just looks stupid.

Well, I too had that problem. But try drilling a hole (a small circular one) and use an output jack at the hole.

Absolutely, in fact most magnetic pickups can be installed on a gentle angle to compensate for string variation.
