#101 1958 & 1960 harley panhead complete head restoration repair welding & machining by tatro machine
valve seat removal, welding, machine and install new unleaded valve seat.
spark plug hole repair. change to 3/4" length.
spark plug and valve seat crack repair.
weld head gasket surface and machine.
complete welding of exhaust spigot and machine back to standard size of 2.050".
cooling fin welding repair and machine back to correct size for full heat transfer. this allows the stock cooling of the head.
weld and machine intake manifold o-ring nipples.
milled performance port job.
full performance multiple angle valve job.
install oversize intake valves.
machine rockerarm blocks to fit rockerarms correctly.
weld rockerarms to correct valve geometry.
set-up valve springs and guides for high lift hotrod cam camshaft.
fully assemble heads, rockerarms and pan covers.
Ha. I haven't done any replacement Pan and Shovel valve seats for years, but I have about four sets to do now, so I started watching videos to see what others do, and refresh my own memory. My one takeaway is that you really should take heed of the folks telling you to scrap those heads. I have a really high zoot scrap bin outside the door, if you just want to send them my way, I'll handle the disposal, no charge. Because, that's the kinda guy I am.
so you like free parts too.

Harley came out with dual points and coils in 1958 love your videos
no, that was 1961-64 and only on the panhead.

Can the intake manifold be welded to the cylinder heads to elimit the o ring set up.
you could but it would break very soon. the oil leaks would be big too.
tatro
Can a valve guide hole be welded ..
Great videos. Do you know what alloy harley used on the heads? Is it 356?
not a chance.

@@TatroMachine- You may be doing everything properly. I'm not criticizing. Just trying to be helpful because most welders are not welding engineers.
Most aluminum engine heads are cast from A356 or similar because its strength and detail. The alloy is 7% silicon. I was asking because your weldments look really smooth and flowing like maybe you are using 1100 or similar filler. A mistake a lot of welders make using it because it melts at a low temperature. 1100 has no silicon. If you use a filler that allows the silicon content of the weldment to drop down into the 3-4% range you have big problems. It takes about 6-12 months for the weldment to transform and fracture without any stress. It looks just like a glass marble that has been heated up and dropped in cold water. Completely fractured inside and held together with a thin skin. I've discussed this issue face to face with welding engineer Paul Dickerson of The American Welding Society so the info is valid. Keep up the good work :)
A356 is what modern heads are made out of, go ask your grampa what they used when he was your age. these are 1958 & 1958 castings that have every form of contamination that you can think of in them. these are like trying to weld a turd. i never herd of your 1100 rod. when you go to a welding shop to get some rod you have three choices, soft, hard or something else. i don't know how to stack dimes but i do know how to burn the crap out of my weld puddle so that i can get a good weld. when you are welding crap that is all that matters. amps, heat and time is all that it takes to get good welds, not some fancy welding rods. all that fancy engineering talk is nice and probably is true but all i care about is getting the job done and that takes alot of power to get done. burn out the crap and get it done.

I will look for those videos thanks
Those cracks are coused by over torquing head bolts . I know this from when i was a young lad i did the same thing
not likely. over heating and detonation cause these problems.
tatro
Hi tatro can you do video on welding aluminum
send me a camera and i will test it out and see what you can see.
tatro
I wouldn't waist my time on that set of heads .I'd just put new ones on it cost versus labor . Pull and replace when they are in that kinda shape
no one makes good panheads anymore. fix what you have is about it these days.

@@TatroMachine i think grain alcohol in fuel today contributes to the biggest part of top end damage today
I know you can't film it i was talking more about set up on how to weld aluminum
i have shown that at times. whatever the job is, it gets shown what to do to fix it. the shovel exhaust ports were the last ones done.

Scrap iron
Throw them away and put something else on their, lol
Buy some after market, they wont know the dif, lol
i would.

@@TatroMachine people just dont get it
Get too work
Jb weld, lol
If you are fixing or selling some of this part's..maybe u should stop smacking the shit out them!
these are harley parts and they can take it just fine. where is all that damage you think i am doing? none because i know what is going on. the speaker really picks up on that metallic sound.
