  • Today I dove into one of Ninjago's biggest issues: the way it handles trauma. Thank you for the support on my last video, means a lot to me! This video was mainly me talking about something that's bugged specifically me for many years. Not sure if anyone else feel the same way I do about the topic... let me know in the comments!

Skybound was so full of missed potential, it is downright infuriating. Jay gets kidnapped and tortured by pirates, watches all his friends effectively die, the friends he has left are angry at him, and it’s all his fault. His mental health is dragged through the dirt and he walks it off, we never get any mention of it again, besides some cheeky references that have no payoff. Nya dies painfully and just doesn't care. Nadakhan had the potential to be so much more complex and interesting as a villain, but no, he needed a creepy obsession with Nya, sure. The ending was not terrible, but it felt hollow. It could have worked if the characters actually were impacted by their trauma, but they weren't, it was over in an instant. This season could have been so much more, and it suffered from an overstuffed, confused plot, with no clear direction or motive, bastardization of multiple characters, and no impact during or after it took place.
TL;DR Skybound was a mess, but full of missed character moments and good ideas mixed in a sea of bad writing

A much better ending to this could’ve been:
Jay rewound time, brining them back to the moment when Nya could’ve held his hand. But, instead of brushing everything off, a terrified look fills his eyes, and he starts panicking. To still get that Jaya moment, Nya used her airjitzu and flew up to Jay, hugging him tight and comforting him. A tear runs down their faces and they just sit there. The other ninja are confused, but worried, and go to comfort their friends.

FINALLY, SOMEONE MADE VIDEO ON IT. I'm so mad that traumas almost never brought up as something characters experienced and felt, and this is brilliant. Like, I love and hate to think about it, Ice Emperor being as one example. I know story in the season is a bit waky, but if you think about how many time Zane spend as Ice Emperor, you'll soon understand that from logical point Akita was born when Zane was already a ruler. She probably was RAISED, running away from the ice and danger he caused. Don't know about poor nindroid, but I would never forgiven myself for turning somebody's life into nightmare since the day they were born.

There's an entire TH-cam recap season called Decoded that tackles Zanes trauma from Rebooted. He literally locked it away in order to properly reboot in season 4. Plus ToE spends Zanes entire arc about learning who he is and how he'll never be able to return to what he was before. It's not direct but TOE hinges on past events like the Wu/Misako from S2, Zanes death in rebooted, as well as mending the abandoned serpentine/human relationship from S1.
Other than TOE I agree Ninjago does a crummy job showing how the experiences the Ninja go through affect them.

Y'know what you said about Cole bottling up his feelings and never sharing with the group? I actually wonder sometimes if Cole struggles with emotional neglect. If you haven't heard of it before, it basically refers to people whose parents didn't pay adequate attention to their emotional needs when they were children. It can be chronic (happening over the long term) or acute (happening during some critical moment of stress). I would guess that Lou being absent while Cole was struggling with Lily's death would qualify as acute emotional neglect.
Emotionally neglected people often have a hard time expressing or even allowing themselves to feel their feelings because, since their caregivers didn't pay enough attention to their emotional needs, they grow up thinking that their emotions are something unimportant, or even something weak that they should be ashamed of. This carries over into their needs in general: emotionally neglected people often have difficulty prioritizing their own needs or saying "no" to people because they think their needs don't matter. This would fit with both the fact that Cole doesn't talk about his feelings with the others and with the fact that he's the dad of the group who always looks out for the others.
Conversely, emotionally neglected people have difficulties with empathy and understanding others' emotions because they never learned much about emotions, period. They also frequently have low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. I'm not sure that Cole really struggles with that. But it's some interesting food for thought regarding Cole.
Honestly, some of the trauma that the ninja have been through should affect their personalities more. Lloyd spent the first ten years of his life in a school which was meant to teach children to be supervillains. I suspect that bullying was rampant, adults were far from caring, and any signs of emotion and vulnerability would have been ruthlessly exploited. Lloyd should have probably had trust issues from the beginning.
Edit: It occurred to me that emotionally neglected people often tend to be more go-with-the-flow type of people, because they're so used to putting their needs aside and adjusting to other people's needs. I think that kind of fits Cole, too.
Edit 2: I just watched Corbyin's video on Cole. I take it back, Cole struggles with low self-esteem and depression. So I think there's a decent chance that he does struggle with emotional neglect.

This video makes so much sense and so manh good points! I love Ninjago so much, but I always feel like if some parts of it were rewritten, like OOC moments or, most of all, how they handle deep real life issues like trauma and other experiences similar to it, especially for Skybound (one of my favorite seasons, too, despite its flaws), Secrets of the Forbidden Spinjitzu, and Crystalized. I get this is a kid's show, but it has/had so much juicy potential to have loads more interior depth and substance.

With HoT it was weird how they brought back Kai and Nya's parents but then didn't... do anything with it? Like Kai and Nya came out from the season the same as they went in, just with parents now who were mostly just a plot device. It wasn't until Seabound that we actually got to see any complicated feelings around their return - in HoT all we got was Kai wondering if they were destined to be evil because their parents might be?? It would have been way cooler if they'd taken the parents plot as a chance to delve more into Kai and Nya's childhoods and how that shaped them into who they are now, lord knows Kai's character could use some introspection.

THANK YOU. This is one of the many reasons I’ve been feeling so disappointed with Ninjago this past half-a-decade. When I first began watching, I enjoyed the goofy lightheartedness of the first couple seasons and wanted nothing more. When I watched seasons 3-6, I was thrilled by the implications and promises of more serious themes and the main characters struggling with darker feelings, and the very few times those promises came through, it kept me glued to my seat in the seasons to come. However, the New Age style of writing makes me so mad: they introduce a dark plot element and want for the audience to take it seriously (i.e., Cole’s fall), and we do, because they can be some of the best parts of the show. But as soon as the writers are done with that season, they wipe their hands clean of whatever they’d previously written and use it in later seasons as a joke, as if the events would in no way have left an effect on the characters. Because of this, I can’t take the story or characters seriously anymore, because of the constant disappointment.
You did a really good job illustrating these points, and I enjoyed watching this video! You clearly have a good grasp on what good writing is, so I look forward to watching more of your videos!

Zane had it the worst. Zane full on died in rebooted only to be brought back with no consequence. I firmly believe he should have stayed dead through the entirety of the tournament of elements. Maybe hint at his return at by having Chen use ice without the ninja or viewers knowing about zane and having kai react to it (since he had that fight with chen where the staff breaks). have them discover pixel broken down at the end of the season and reveal that zane is alive. Possession could’ve had zane appear as a ghost or something else since he’s a robot. Maybe a disembodied piece of code like the overlord in rebooted or have him possess a retired nindroid body from rebooted. I know he was probably brought back right away because lego wanted zane sets to sell, but still would’ve been nice. Also everything you mentioned about ice emperor zane is very valid. It’s almost like the end of rebooted again. Hugely traumatic experience completely thrown out of his personality by the end of the season. And then him dying and the goofy ice emperor bits just make both of these worse since it makes these important character moments into jokes instead of good writing.

And his mom abandoned him and then suddenly came back and made up excuses for it and Lloyd forgives her

I really wished they would have spent more time on Zane remembering whp he is in the element turnament season. I really liked the scenes where he interacts with the dragon in his head. Like theres this thing inside of you that youre very afraid of, its dangerous, but its a part of you. You might not remember it, or know anything about it, but its there and its a central part of you.
I talked to a friend about it and they thought the dragon could represent trauma that youve locked away and forgotten. I think the dragon represents the personality you loose after a traumatic event and you want to rediscover it to heal. First off I love this. Secondly I think saying nothing traumatizing happened in season four isn’t really true. Kai faking betrayal and basically handing Lloyd to Chen without telling Lloyd that he was just acting would be pretty traumatic for Lloyd, and after that when Kai finally shows that he was acting, he falls under the corruption of the staff of elements and almost kills Lloyd and skylor. I’ve always hated that those two events happen and after the whole fight are never brought up again. Like it never happened at all. Also not to mention in this season lloyd had to send his dad to Lego hell to save everyone. So I think season four was pretty traumatizing.

In my eyes, ninjago is the kind of show that establishes something, then completely forgets about it and throw it away later on. Or at least temporarily. Think of skylor for an example. On Season 9, when mystake was fighting garmadon, skylor could’ve literally used The elemental of speed to touch him, take mystake, run away within a flash. LIKE SERIOUSLY- but she was somehow beaten up by none other than harumi, the weakest son of garmadon. There are a lot of other examples. Maybe because it’s a seasonal show? And about the trauma thing, Maybe because it’s meant for kids and they don’t want to touch on trauma? Either way, they just straight up trash everything that was established just for the plot or for the upcoming season.

I think there are definitely things that the writers would like to do but are constrained by the ratings of the show and their targeted audience (which are mostly elementary schoolers). Tommy Andreason did write his own "fanfiction" of a much grittier Ninjago called Way of the Departed with Cole as his star. Unfortunately, due to their TV rating and need to push for toy sales, character resetting is going to happen. Lessons having to be relearned, the ninja being in vague ages despite them taking on adult professions, etc... are all made to entertain kids. It's just something to be expected from a children show like this, but I agree that there are many shows that tackle writing in a better way. Hopefully Dragons Rising will be up to the task.

I think in tournament of elements, Lloyd would also get some trauma since his father sacraficed himself to end the fake anacondrai war to banish himself. And not to mention, he had to see his father one last time before the cursed realm being destroyed and his father dying too.
Overrall I agree with a lot of your points, something I do with my oc is give some traits that happened to her that she got from previous seasons and Ninjago doesn't do much to its characters (Except their golden boy and Ik its ironic that I pointed out something relating to him but it makes sense.) and it annoys me.

All of them should have had their trauma discussed or dealt with. Like, they have all been through literal hell.
(This is going to be a bit of a rant)
I feel like Lloyd, Kai, Jay, and Cole should all have had some form of negative reaction to water. Cole became a ghost, meaning he most likely developed a fear of water because for a while it could've killed him. Kai has had an intense fear of water because he can't swim. It has been briefly touched on but only for plot convenience. Kai has almost drowned twice, once while saving Lloyd after he was possessed by Morro, an the second time while he was fighting Kallmar. Jay also nearly drowned during the same season Nya sacrificed herself. I feel like those should've been addressed.
Lloyd should've had some reaction towards reminders of Morro or the affects of having been possessed. Morro's a dead guy, a ghost, he doesn't need nutrition so he most likely only gave Lloyd's body the bare minimum in order to survive. Plus any storms with strong winds should've reminded Lloyd of Morro in some way. He also should've had more of a reaction to his relationship with his Mother and her suddenly coming back. Nya and Kai did, why couldn't he? Misako had completely abandoned him at Darkely's, and oh yeah, they never mention how awful that school must've been or the fact that Lloyd was a homeless child for a while.
Cole should've also had some form of trauma from the fall and his mother's death but that's already been discussed.
As mentioned in the video, Skybound hould've heavily affected Nya and Jay. Realistically the two would've had nightmares for weeks or certain triggers that could possibly cause a panic attack. JUST. GIVE. US. SOMETHING.
Zane handling his countless near death and actual death experiences should be mentioned and dealt with aling with him becoming the Ice Emperor, but again, this has been talked about.
Kai feeling useless because he lost his powers, maybe touch on that? Same with when Nya lost hers.
I'm also pretty sure that NONE OF THEM would be okay after the sheer amount of near, and actual death experiences they have had. Kai's almost died a couple times, Jay's almost died a few times, we know Cole's almost died before and technically did since he became a ghost, Nya has died and has almost died, granted Lloyd and Zane are really the only ones with 100% canon deaths and of course the casual near death experiences.
None of these characters should be okay.

The thing for trauma for characters in my eyes, is how they feel, and how it changes their decisions. Trauma changes perspective of someone, changes how their mind works, because they wont through a specific experience they can’t forget about. But that doesn’t happen with the ninja.

I think there are multiple problems (even though it's my 2nd favourite season)
      - Jay gets a lot of trauma and depth and development that doesn't get mentioned in the later seasons at all, and pretty much only jaya is referenced
      - Nadahkaan was an extremely good and intelligent villain and was also traumatized by his family's death, but then instead of using that part of his character as a further motivation and instead of getting mentioned more one of his main motivations becomes marrying a child that looks like his ex gf or something. It was sort of annoying
-:a lot of people dislike the ending because it erases all the events that happen in the season, and although Jay and Nya remember everything they still don't seem that affected by it
But besides that i can't find other reasons. I feel like the season was very good by itself and i don't really understand why so many people hate it either. It has it's flaws but i don't think it'd horrible at all, though that may be bias because my favourite character is Jay

Hey, this is SUPER off topic lol, but I want to get into making a few Ninjago videos of my own. Where do you get the clips and such from the episodes themselves and what do you use to edit? This video is great by the way, very nice discussion :)

I use the Ninjago Media Project google drive for the episodes! (Except for Crystalized. Got those from TH-cam.) As for editing, I use Sony Vegas. Don't buy it, waste of money. Just 🏴‍☠️

While I was watching this video I realized probably why Mr. E is not Echo Zane, because Echo Zane was found by the ninjas when the pirates we're around and Jay didn't mention him in his wish.

5:08 actually Kai was possessed for a bit by Chen’s staff and he tried using it to kill Lloyd and Skylor. But thankfully he stopped when the ninjas including the other eliminated contestants arrives just in time in a vehicle

I agree with Crystalized, it handled grief well, but it brushed over a bunch of stuff, I would’ve liked the original version it would’ve ended. Where Lloyd was absolutely corrupted by the Oni side, destroying the Overlord entirely and taking his place (though Garmadon did actually die.) Nya hadn’t came back in the early episodes, but specifically the last episode, then her and Lloyd would have a 1v1.
I do think Lloyd being completely destroyed and taken over by the Oni side would’ve been a better way to show his bottled anger and other negative emotions, like you just watched your dad die for like what? The 4th time? So yeah, I would’ve been extremely upset to the point that I would lose control.
It also would’ve been nice to see Nya 1v1 Lloyd, she’s still the Ocean but it would’ve been great to see the fight. She has her memories back, but her found little brother is destroying the city she sacrificed to protect, so seeing a heartfelt/bittersweet 1v1 would’ve been amazing.

Don't worry ur not the only one who didn't like Crystalized for me it had many opurtunities to be great but they kinda fall flat either as show progress or durring the finally like...whole dragon form or rather how they got it was bull*shit sorry for swearing 0-0 it litterly has NO sense 0-0 they eresed elemental dragons bc "they were too OP" ...but then they give us this and still plan to continue the series 0-0
Are they also goona just erase it bc it's too op? ^^ Great Just Great !
I honestly thought when I saw the trailer that it would be about Lloyd becoming an antagonist maybe , and Overlord's return was...bit forced but I can forgive that, what Does bother me is ...Why couldn't we explore Where he got that crystal power why does he have it he never did before it would be interesting to explore :/...
I was also kinda excited when Overlord mentioned making Ninja evil, like imagin that they Did defeat overlord but he did menege to make some ninja evil ! Like Kai, Jay and Cole and idk make new 3 seasons about what type of villain would each ninja be~ And I don't mean Joke villains i mean Atcuall threats.
We kinda explored Kai's dark side before it would be cool to see it all out, in some "fire empire" that he build +,+
each could represent different type of villan ~
And Nya ( who is still working on bringing her powers back), Lloyd, Zane ( since he alredy got to be the villan once) and Wu would have to stop them, maybe even Skylor bc I do think like she is super underdeveloped as character and so is her realtionship with Kai so like this could potentially be great oportunity ! They would have to fight they're familly and bring them back to normal ~
BUT no instead we got some overpowerd dragon form and a fancy golden dragon I guess
