I'm seriously sending this to my dad. He's been mainlining the 'muc for as long as I can remember, and when I still lived at home, I would shake a cold bottle up for him every morning before school/work. He said he takes the pills now because he can't recreate the way that I always mixed it for him, his always turns gloopy super fast. If I knew it was just because I was shaking it up using ice cold water, I would've let him in on the "secret" sooner.
This week a young person told me that she used to microwave Metamucil to make “slime”, so the temperature really does change the results!

I am always so impressed with the fluidity of the scripts for your videos. Every word is purposeful and flows into what you are saying next. It honestly reads like poetry even though the content is about a fiber supplement.
also the last line is always a banger.
Another good way is just to blend it into your smoothies with frozen berries, if you like those in the morning. I just put a large tablespoon of psyllium husk (which is Metamucil basically is + flavoring) and bbrrr in the blender. As you said, cold temperature slows down the goopification and it also adds a nice thick texture to a smoothie.
It really is a gamechancer for anyone who's struggling with regularity.
I think this is a good idea, if your smoothies are primarily berries, and are cut with a decent amount of fluid to begin with. If you're making a smoothie that's also gonna have a ton of both fresh fruit AND leafy greens, throwing metamucil on top of it, in the same serving might actually be overkill, and have you running into those diarrhetic BMs people are scared of that causes fiber supplement hesitancy in the first place.
berries already contain plenty of fiber
It's a testament to your skills that a) I clicked on a video about metamucil and b) that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Heartily enjoy your channel, your no-frills scripts and your tasteful delivery
From someone who’s been using it regularly for over 12 years, here’s a tip: if it’s your first time taking psyllium fiber, take less than the recommended amount at first. If you’re not used to it, it can make you feel bloated all day. Start off by taking a small serving in between meals, and increase gradually over a few days. Enjoy!
Good tip, thank you
I'm an Dietitian from Australia, basically this. Fibre intake should be introduced slowly, starting out with -5g per week and increasing by 5 grams each week until you hit the 30g recommended intake in most countries. It really does depend on how much someone is used to eating fibre though, if you have someone who just needs that little bit more already is regularly adding vegetables to their meals, having snacks of fruit, nuts and wholegrain products then they won't need as much as are less likely to have gut issues as a result.
Gee, I wonder why?
i started with 2 cups a day but its been helping me so much, not to be gross lol but since i was a baby, ive had bad constipation, i'm 17 now, just started taking this 3 days ago and my shit doesn't come out hard or in balls, i literally feel like my life has changed

Just a quick tip for anyone out there who likes to save $$$ or found they didn't necessarily like Metamucil - you can buy 1 lb. bags of bulk psyllium husk (the "active ingredient" in Metamucil) for 1/10th the price. I found the taste of Metamucil strange and also didn't really feel like drinking a bunch of sugar or stevia (depending on what Metamucil variant you buy). You're gonna be trying to drink it fast anyway, why pay 10x for it to taste slightly orangey and sugary.
Be careful, many bulk psyllium husks contain lead, especially if they are sourced from India.
I'm on anticoagulants that restrict me from eating "leafy greens" which means my fiber intake is a bit limited, so I've been taking (generic) metamucil regularly. My only other protip is that the artificial orange flavor in the fiber is the same one that's used in tang, so I buy the sugar free fiber powder and then also add in some tang so it actually tastes like an orange drink and not "thick water that's orange flavor adjacent"
I've been drinking this stuff for a couple months now and I'm in my early 30s. Everyone I tell about it is always questioning me as to why, so I just hit them with my classy slogan "it just makes shit easy."
Honestly one of the best purchases I've ever done.
That's an excellent slogan
OMG, and the look on their face is ? lol
"We're making shit ezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz"
Metamucil is my secret for single-wipe poops
Early 30s here. Been drinking it for close the three years now. Best decision I’ve ever made.
If anyone lives near an Indian grocery store they psyllium husk for even cheaper, and you can often get the whole husk (not powdered) which you just take a spoonful straight followed with a full glass of water. None of the goopy grossness of the powdered stuff. They even have cardamom (elaichi) flavored husk sometimes. If you don't see "husk" it might be called "isabgol"
thanks :)
I buy the powdered version in bulk from the local coop and prefer it to the unground version. I did some research and either one is fine, it’s just a preference. I don’t like the gritty texture of the non ground psyllium. Plus it makes a great thickener if you’re cutting carbs. I also use it in my dog’s homemade diabetic dog food. He can only have 1 cup of food per day and he acts like he’s starving all the time, the psyllium powder helps him feel more full and he’s less likely to rampage. (Also good for blood sugar.)
Instead of husk or isabgol, it's sometimes labeled "Lal Mirch". Try to chug it so quickly you don't taste it until it's already down.
Please, be VERY careful with this. I once bought a cheaper version from India until I read the fine print - WARNING, CONTAINS LEAD. When I looked further into it, many products from India are unregulated and high in lead. Especially psyllium husk. Best to spend the extra couple dollars and be safe with something tested and regulated.

If you're wondering if you get enough fiber in a day, here's the math I did: 1/2 lb of Brussels sprouts(7g) 1 onion(1g), 1 tbsp chia seeds (6g), 2tbsp peanut butter(2g), 1 serving almonds(2g), 1 banana (2g), 1 protein bar (2g), 1 serving of whole wheat pasta (5g), and 1 bowl of grape nuts cereal (the ones that are like pebbles, 7g), most of which are considered great high fiber foods, adds up to 2g LESS than the amount of fiber recommended to me in a day (38g), and none of the rest of the food I logged had any fiber whatsoever. Hitting your fiber goals is a lot harder without some assistance than you'd think, even though people will say "just eat more vegetables like carrots and broccoli!" Even though 5 servings EACH OF those only gets you 20g of fiber in a day.
38 grams a day is an absolutely insane suggestion though. Like shit that’s almost equivalent to protein and that’s a macronutrient. No shot that average people from anytime period were hitting that unless their diet was part wood lol
@@monhi64 yeah so usually these amounts are found by surveying people who are healthy and saying "okay well the healthiest were in this range" and parsing out from there, so the recommended amount is probably based on how people who ate 38g per day either a) overestimated if they were bad studies, or b) basically ate a raw, superfood diet and used food as a tool to perfect their body. 38g for a 6'2" 180lb man isn't like "eat this to be healthy enough", it's "the healthiest people with the most desirable outcomes from eating fiber ate that amount or a little more." But that being said, trying to hit 38, even if you end at 28, is better than not.
Still eat the chia, almonds, flax, bananas, blueberries, and non-gluten grains. Eat as much farm not factory/unprocessed as you can. Lower your sweetness and sugar acuity. Skip all US wheat products and processed protein bars. Cut the lactose and eat nutrient dense meals with the amount of protein, greens, and fats dictated by your health and meditation. Look up low fodmaps, talk to your doctor. IBS C and D can be helped by similar diets. Can you eat greens or do you need to restrict them, is citrus creating skin problems, is your endocrine system getting what it needs. Are you a grazer with low blood sugar, or a three squares and two snacks person. Learn what realistic portions look like and ditch the giant plates for a more diminutive salad plate. So many things we could all be doing. Start with one small thing and give it a week. Then add another and give it a week. Before you know it. Bam. You feel better and you’re sleeping better. 🫶🏼
I will say that legumes are real good for this. I think a serving a split peas is maybe 17g by itself
Fantastic video on topic that never gets enough attention when it comes to nutrition! I'd like to add, if you can't have Metamucil because of some of the additives or simply prefer a cheaper/not as sweet drink: The main ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk/powder and is available to buy as a non-branded product in many places. It can be sprinkled over foods like oats without altering the taste or texture much. You can also drink it the same way you'd drink Metamucil, but the taste is a bit more noticeably "earthy", so it may take some getting used to. Generally, I find it more versatile than powder options with very strong flavors.
It can also be bought in capsule form, though I'm not sure if this can affect the effectiveness.
Shaq, this is serendipitous: I decided only yesterday, after learning that daily intake is safe and recommended, to get on a Metamucil (or similar product) routine. If anyone is curious about fiber in general, mycelium husk (Metamucil) is a soluble fiber. This is good for adding bulk to your stool, if youre dealing with runniness or small pellets. Insoluble fiber like bran flakes/raisin bran, is good for drawing water to your stool, like if you are very compacted or constipated. Different fibers for different problems
this comment just changed my life
@@trinh_win Ok nigga 👍
It’s the opposite. Soluble fiber draws water in, insoluble fiber adds bulk.
My dude it is quite literally the opposite.
Holy shit thank you!

You are so impressively well spoken! A delight to listen to
My mom extolled the benefits of fiber to me from a young age, so I tend to get enough from what I already eat (old fashioned oats for breakfast near daily, whole wheat bread, plenty of fruits and vegetables, etc)
Fiber supplement’s definitely a good idea for people who for whatever reason can’t get it from their diet though.
I tried this with just a regular glass of ice water and stirring it a lot with a metal straw and it was still way better than when I have used non ice water! Thank you!
I've honestly been thinking about taking this for a while, and seeing this is going to put me over the edge.
I'd actually been searching for how to make this palatable to drink and the best I had come up with was to stir it as fast as possible in half a glass of a protein shake and then chug it before it turns non-newtonian.
same here. i even used an immersion blender with a whisk attachment to get it super mixed and it would still turn to gloop after about a minute. i tried the ice and shake bottle trick and it works! i can finally just sip on it.
I bought a bottle of glucomannan pills and a bottle of psyllium pills yesterday. SERIOUS TIP: Cut your protein shakes with water soluble fiber, like flavorless Metamucil, and non soluble fiber, my favorite of which is just baker's chocolate powder. Having both types of fiber is good for you, and adding fiber to your pre-made protein powder helps reduce the sugar content even further. I even add peanut powder to mine for a little extra flavor and protein.
I mean, I don't know if that would hurt protein absorption (I try not to take fiber at the same time as my meds), but if not, that's kind of genius. Because protein shakes definitely make things worse downstairs.
if you use casein and throw it in the fridge for a few min, the whole thing sets up like pudding. i eat it in a bowl as a dessert.
@@philipfahy9658 fiber actually helps the protein digest properly. Gut bacteria will eat protein when plant matter isn’t available, which is the cause of nasty protein farts. It also helps the protein take it’s time and be absorbed instead of excreted prematurely.
Chocolate orange sounds good to me! I'll give the metaprotein mix a shot.
My roommate has been on me off and on for a while now trying to convince me to try metamucil. I fall pretty squarely in the first category: why do I need a supplement when I can just eat better food? The point you make about how difficult it is to eat that well every meal hit home though, and maybe getting a helping hand isn't the worst idea.
It's really not a big deal, just drink 8oz of water with a tablespoon of mucil mixed in every morning for a week and see if makes you poop better. That's it
it's literally just fiber and your body needs lots of it (more than you probably think). if you can "cheat" to get more, than do it lol.
I’m so happy you posted this video. Over a year ago when I moved out of my parents house I got the rudest awakening to the fact that my diet and BMs were utter cheeks. A Reddit-rabbit hole in and I was off to the nearest rite aid for what I would then go on to recommend to all of my friends. We were all in our mid-20s and as I approach 30 I can’t even begin to express my love for this stuff.

Love this.
I've been taking Metamucil since my early 20s because I knew that my fiber intake was never going to be as stable as I'd like. I've settled on taking a heaped tablespoon in a coffee mug every morning and night and it's honestly heavenly. I was amused to see the size of the container Shaq used, because when I started I was putting the powder into a similar amount of water and I HATED chugging that orange garbage down. Moving into a smaller container made the whole thing possible for me. (I do drink a lot of water and tea throughout the day, so I diluted the mixture soon after drinking it - it might be problematic to drink at that concentration otherwise)
This video is right on the money. Perfect message and even smoother delivery.
if you live in a country that doesn't have metamusil at a reasonable price, linen seeds are also an excellent source of fiber. find linen seed powder (or blitz whole linen seeds), add 1-2 teaspoons to a glass of water with an optional flavoring. alternatively, try to find some fiber suppliment with *psyllium* as the main component. that's the stuff they make metamusil from
Is linseed and linen seed the same thing?
@@triphazard2906 yes, sometimes it's called flaxseed too
I legit just started taking a generic brand fiber powder and I can say it's great. Start a little slower, maybe 1 teaspoon, if you're starting it so you know what you'll feel like. Drink it with plenty of water, and you'll be golden.
I mix mine with whatever Orange Juice I have in the fridge and I love it that way. I advise against mixing it with Orange Juice w/ Pulp though because it can make the consistency a bit overbearing.
truly an educational king. I thought we were only meant to take this when you get constipated but today I learned more
I've also just bought the generic, unflavored psyllium husk and drink it with a glass of milk. The semi-"nutty" flavor complements milk quite well.
Big chief coming in with what I thought was a joke, but now I am considering buying some muc'.
Thanks Shaq!
So, credit where credit is due, I've been drinking metamucil daily since I saw this video and it's actually lowered my cholesterol. However, I think this overcomplicates the process a little. I find that its much easier just to take a cup, put in metamucil, fill it halfway with cold water, give it a vigorous stir with a spoon and chug it. I found that the Ice was making it too cold to down it, plus the metamucil would clump up around the cubes. And shaking the bottle (I use a mason jar with lid) just made the bottle a lot messier as the muc would find it's way into the screw top of the lid. So, do it however you like, but for me a simple stir and chug does it.
A unique contribution to the food and cooking community. You really have an interesting and fresh approach.
Thanks for this video, Shaq! If anyone is interested, you can essentially forage the product Metamucil. It comes from plantain, not the banana-like thing, but plants in the genus Plantago. The seeds in particular produce *mucilage* which the important component of this product. Mucilage is essentially a dietary fiber and is responsible for the thickening action of the water it is placed and mixed into. I have a video on foraging and making an at home mucilage for those who are curious! I'll try to do one with Plantago in the future!
Wow I’m surprised you aren’t at 1M! Your channel is perfect imo
You are the best, most wholesome thing on the internet. I love you, Internet Shaquille!
other tips: pair with flavors that go well with the orange (I'm not crazy about the artificial orange flavor), and mix into a drink that's already thick so you don't have to chug to beat the gloop. The best of both of these worlds is mixing it into a smoothie with other fruit flavors. Tastes great, and is thick enough to keep the metamucil suspended. Even if it doesn't, the texture of a mucil glob won't really stand out amongst all the thick fruit pulp.
A lower effort option is mixing it into chocolate milk. The milk is a little thicker and chocolate and orange are a great pair. You can still have glooping problems, but personally I find them more tolerable in this context than if it were just plain water.
Metamucil is truly a game changer. First tried it a few years ago when eating really spicy food as I heard it would help the resulting bm go smoother, ended up using it daily after that and have been taking it ever since.
TMI but it has also helped with my hemorrhoids 💀😂 faster, cleaner, smoother shits, what's not to love?
Just check what kind of sweetener is used to avoid digestive issues, the sugar free version has aspartame, older sugar free versions have sucralose which can cause digestive upset and cramps for some people, the one with stevia is best.
This is good content. I've tried to adjust my diet to get more fiber so many times and.. realistically, I have failed. I won't stop trying (got 3 batches of kimchi fermenting in the fridge) but now that I think of it, there's no reason not to add some metamucil to my diet. Thanks for the reminder
I always add flavorless psyllium husk to my coffee. It works well! Changes the flavor and texture very slightly but I've gotten used to it and enjoy it.

Great video and what a help in mixing the muc! I now do it as you suggested and use low sodium V-8. Its already a little thick so you dont even notice the difference and I much prefer salty over sweet. Thank you!
Thanks for putting yourself out there and making a video like this. We appreciate what you do
Hank Green got me to try this with a similar unsponsored recommendation video, and it genuinely helped me with digestive issues I had for a long time
Nice information but I'd just like to point out that Metamucil has maltodextrin as a sugar substitute in order to make it "zero-sugar". But maltodextrin has been shown to adversely impact the gut microbiome, so Metamucil will help you in one way but may harm you in another way. I'd recommend finding pure psyllium husk powder if you can and make sure there are no other additives.
Oh that's so good to be aware of, thank you!
Embrace the goop, 2 minutes with mildly warm water makes a delicious jello drink that'll fill your belly with warmth that's perfect for putting you to sleep.
The Verizon ad at the beginning of this video (assuming you're also getting it) has made me realize that I'm homeowner age now and nowhere near owning a home. Great.
Did you know that there is a small subset of people who pee blood if they regularly use Metamucil? Neither did I! Did you also know that if you go to the doctor complaining about that, the first thing they do is stick a camera up your…thing to check what’s going on? Neither did I!
You're saving lives with this comment, my good man.

Here’s my ‘mucil process:
1) Turn faucet on to max cold and let it run while I prep
2) Take out my glass (I use a 12oz wide mouth Ball jar) and scoop in 3 smoothed/flattened teaspoons of the ‘muce
3) Fill it under the faucet while doing some light swirling, then take my coffee frother (I bought it literally only for Metamucil but keep it next to the coffee maker so no one asks about it) and spin that baby up until the ‘mucil is dissolved
4) Chug it as fast as possible because he’s not kidding, that cup will get thicker quicker than you’d like and it’s not fun to drink then
Note: I have the sugar-free/artificial sweetener name-brand Metamucil
Note: Don’t ask about my coffee frother
Happy ‘mucings to you and yours!
Sad this didn’t do as well as your other videos, you’re an angel!
I started taking psyllium husk this year and it’s honestly a lifesaver, I’m excited try this version out!
I can't believe you sold me on metamucil of all things. I was about to throw out that goopy gag-inducing orange powder but somehow you made it look fashionable to drink again. What the heck? You are a legendary salesperson.
Wow, this is the first time that I was already aware of all the advice you gave in a video. Regardless, this advice is AMAZING. I've sworn by Metamucil since I started taking it 6 or so years back. I drink it daily with a bottle of flavored water (since the taste isn't the greatest overall).
I’m not sure why I started taking it because someone left a container of it behind so after a year I gave it a whirl. I eat fairly healthy, lots of salad. I have regular BM’s first one regular and the second one loose almost diarrhea .but after Metamucil my second movement was regular like the first and I lost that sudden urge To go or I soil myself. I know TMI. As well I seem to be losing some of the extra weight I have been packing around. I am absolutly sold on this stuff. Thank you for sharing!
I love this stuff. One glass a day and things move like clockwork. I do 1.5 tbsp in a full glass of room-temp water, stir it fast and chug. But if you delay more than a few seconds it starts gooping up so I can see the benefit of going ice cold.
Didn't think I'd be buying Metamucil on Amazon today but here we are
Really appreciate having a video on healthy eating, and not just pretty eating
My DUDE, this is what the people have been waiting for!!
God bless you, netshaq, for making the content we need
Metamucil and other bulk-forming fiber laxatives absorb things like medications, so the general rule is take it 4-6 hours before or after something that needs to be absorbed by the body, and consult your doctor or psychiatrist.
This is the most 30's thing I've ever seen and as of last year, I'm here for it.
i remember going through my mom's old cookbooks and magazines as a kid and there were so many ads in the 80's about increasing fiber intake. for some reason, it's now seen as something that only "old" people do.
As a dude who has been rolling the dice with BMs for the last five years and never landed on a good fiber solution, I'm going to have to give this a try.
Content I was unaware I was looking for.
There's a reason that Metamucil has such amazing ratings on Amazon. I tried it out myself after reading a Reddit thread where people discussed inexpensive, yet life changing purchases.
I love your proof that this is non sponsored 😆
Great message. Husk powder is great!
Me from the past would never have imagined that I would stop watching TV in favour of independent creators online, who makes sincere and entertaining videos about whatever they cost- including Metamucil.
The internet is something else.
Hey I've been a long time muce and LaCroix tolerator. Turns out combining the two (preferably citrus lacroix or any other unsweetened flavored carbonated water) results in a product that is way more than the sum of its parts. It tastes straight up like orange soda.
Another reason not to take it, if I remember correctly, is that you can't take it nearby other medications as it can affect absorption. So for example if you take medicines throughout the day, might want to look into that. But yes I absolutely agree that people can do well to look into fiber supplementation!!
The marinara video got me intrigued and this video made me subscribe 😂
I always thought that I don't need those supplements because my bowels seem to work well enough and they always seemed kinda disgusting. This video has taken the second reason away and that has convinced me to try it because hey, I might be missing out.
They also have a no sugar added version (without aspartame) where a lot of generics have them sadly.
I put generic, unflavored fiber powder in my protein shakes. Works like a charm!
I've never had metamucil turn gloopy on me. My problem is the grainy settling. Good point on the bottle method
Metamucil is more expensive here in the UK since you need to order it online, so I'm looking at alternatives. Standard tub on Amazon is 29p/35c per serving compared to 8p/10c mentioned in the video, which gives you 2.4g soluble fibre/fiber. Ground flaxseed is around 1p/1c for 2.4g soluble fibre but obviously you can't make it into a tasty orange drink, so instead of two servings of Metamucil per day you could offset by having one serving of each. It's recommended to have around 10-15g soluble fibre per day so you can have the flaxseed with oats (3.8g/100g) for breakfast to add another decent chunk.
There's also a similar orange drink called Fybogel but that's still around 22p per serving, so it's cheaper but not 8p cheap.
Not hard to find plain psyllium husk in UK
I just started taking Metamucil to try and help my digestive issues…………… thank u shaq
I use 1.5 TBSP per 10 oz of water and rapidly stir and scrape the edges of the bottom of the glass (better to have a
glass where the interior bottom has a curve verses a 90 degree angle where the muc can accumulate). I find adding more water means it’s not so “gloopy” and dare I say actually “refreshing”. YMMV.
I eat about 2-4 tablespoons of ground flax seeds with water whenever I have binging cravings, and the fiber and protein do a great job with minimizing my junk food intake. Highly recommend!
You could get the same effect with veggies, but in a binge state flax seed or ‘muc is much easier to intervene with
Raw flax seeds may poison you in high quantities. Be careful.
@@mikaeleriksson1720 oh jeez I haven’t heard that before, how much is considered a high quantity? And where did you hear that?
Shaq could put out a sponsored video on tire pressure gauges and I would click in, knowing that in 4 minutes or less, I would both understand why he was making a video on it and also have my life meaningfully enriched with some useful info.
You got a lot of goodwill built up and I think the people see that you'll not say anything or agree to advertiser copy that would go against what you believe or mislead. Obvi you gotta know your analytics but based on engagement for a video about poop-good, I think you should get that bag every so often
This is absolutely main content material and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
YOOOO WHAT UPPP, METAMUCIL GAMING!!! Here's some more tips, for extra flavor, add some orange or lemon zest or oleo saccharum. Metamucil is already grainy, so you won't notice it! Also, regular flavored water is also good to mix it with.
I've been The Juice for a long time, and it has substantially improved my gut health. I'd put even more jokes into this post, but I've heard Metahumor isn't as popular nowadays.
