Hi Derek, Aidan here, met you on Friday morning in Lough Bradan Forest. I have much respect for you man and your journey. Wish we could have chatted longer! That old derelict building you were in @4.05 min was an old school, Willmount school, my father went to that school. You were well off the Ulster way there, glad you seen Sloughan glen waterfalls though! I grew up not far from there. Loving you channel and following you on the Ireland Way. Hope you having a nice rest in Belcoo and the blisters are healing...Buen Camino amigo!
Firstly, thank you for taking a second to like this video. I shoot and edit all videos on the trail (mostly on an iPad mini in my tent). Coffee link Is ko-fi.com/derekcullen I really do appreciate your support and I talk about certain issues in these videos not only for transparency/honesty/realism but also to open up discussions for those who might not feel okay about talking about such things in public. Thank you all 💚🇮🇪☘️
My grandmother believed that she had heard a banshee. She was on her way home from school in Bantry in the early 20th century. She thought at first that it was a woman in distress, so she tried to track the sound. Try as she might, she could never get closer to the source of the wailing. When she arrives home, she was told that her uncle had died. She was a firm believer in banshees
I'm glad I found your channel. I lived and worked in Belfast for a couple years, and my grandmother from Cork had told many many stories about the times she grew up in (pre WW II). I miss Ireland. Such a beautiful country. Thanks for posting 👍
Just started watching some older videos after following your journey along the Appalachian trail. The energy in your intro is inspiring and brought a smile to my face!
Toes are like siblings. The little one likes to mess with the one beside! My little one goes under his brother as well creating a major callous and sometimes blisters. When there is fluid I always use a needle to open and drain carefully then compeed up as best I can. Good you have a zero day or two. Keep smiling and singing.
Great video as always Derek 😊👍 I'd always heard that the story of the banshee came about from people hearing barn owls screeching. Because theyre nocturnal, people would have never seen one, so mystery sound. And it's quite a freaky sound if you've ever heard it. Hope the blister is healing up, nothing worse 😫 great song choices as always 😅👌👏
Derek, I continue to be impressed by your determination, willingness to take risks and honesty on your journey. I think that eruption from your blister may have anded here in Antrim😊 That film production looked impressive, though no way could compare to your epic production👍 Loved the phone box being reclaimed and even the possibility that the line was still live📞. Seeing the deer🦌 on a lonely forest track with no one else around was so cool. Some more cool campsites amid the forestry whilst managing there midges. And of course your singing soundtrack would be far better than that of the movie production too😊 Epic👍👍
Hi Derek! I found your videos while researching and gathering information for a possible Camino Frances walk (solo) in the near future. Your friendly spirit and positive outlook on life are inspiring! Also fun to hear all of the singing! Your comment on this video really hit home with me..."Are you willing to spend your whole life afraid of things that are very unlikely to happen, and as a result miss out on all the amazing things that might?" I do feel that same peace and happiness when outdoors in the wilderness, but have let fear stop me from fully enjoying it. There's not much adventure in sitting at home dreaming about it. Thanks for the motivation!
Loved the episode. Being honest with yourself around what your priorities are and ensuring you focus on your real dreams is a simple thought but fully transformational. Be safe
Well yv done it again Derek .. you have made me very homesick walking through donegal lol. Great video my friend... hope the blister is OK!! Ouch nasty that. Head good.. body good...Feet NOT good 😐 ... but your a warrior!!! From Delboy
Loved this Derek, your positivity at the start of the videos is so infectious, the mantra about "feet good, body good, mind good", never fails to make me smile plus you were, accidentally, or not, at the stones for the solstice. Must be the 'cosmic energy' Derek. Thanks for sharing
Derek I'm loving your journey! some man for one man. Really enjoying the videos & channel & your little chats & singing👏🤣,would love an aul hike & chin wag with ya! wish you all the best & also all the best with your blisters (nothing worse to drain your energy while walking (although I see your wearing hiking shoes all the time walking roads) wondering whether you brought some light runners for all the roads,I'm imagine it would help! Anyway your a legend! ☘
Lovin the videos bud. My day of reckoning has arrived 😂 I'm starting the e8 tomorrow and when that is done I'm continuing northwards on the Ireland way. Delighted I'll have your videos for entertainment ✌
Oh the sweet sweet nostalgic smell of freshly spread slurry. When I lived overseas, visiting home, this was a comforting smell. It’s amazing how your perceptions can change. Great show DC! 🧚♀️ 🌞
I really look forward to your videos Derek, enjoying the adventure, hope your foot heals up during the 2 night break, we'll see you again in a few days.
Now Derek I know it sounds mad...but I put a THIN layer of vaseline on my feet every morning on long distance hikes. Admittedly the longest I've done is 10 days. I was lucky enough to hear this tip on my first long hike and I've not had a blister so far.
Hello Derek. Great as always to see the next video of your journey and scenery. I was reminded today of a work colleague I used to have who's nickname was Blister, as he had an uncanny ability to show up when the work had been done!! Keep safe. 🙏
I have to say your toe situation was grim, in da face! 😂 I hope it doesn't give you any more bother. I really like how you interact and appreciate the landscape, wildlife and everything else you encounter along the way. Be safe and be lucky, all the best for the days ahead 👍
Thanks for the great videos. I watch them over my morning coffee in New Zealand. You are inspiring. I have a singalong with you too 🤣 a great way to start my day, all good!
Maybe a day or two rest will do u and yr feet a world of good. I got blisters on a hike I did and it wasn’t fun. Also Ramon noodles are a nice substitute for pasta. Looking forward to yr next video, always nice to hear what u have to say. Keep the spirit up and before u know it u will be in the rebel county. “Head good, body good, feet good all good” 👍
Derek, Your viddies are always welcomed here. They are always uplifting and leave us in a good state of mind. One thing for which I am far from an expert: The wild flower bombs will not do well under the pines. (At least that’s what I think.)
Spot on about finding adventure in Ireland. I've ran some amazing ultra runs in wiclow, kerry, tipperary and the mournes. Took part in some amazing adventure races where i didn't see any houses for hours on end. If you want to find adventure in Ireland your imagination is the limit. It genuine surprised me what I have found out there.
Hi Derek, I have been following your trek, you are great, some very thought provoking chats on your videos. Hope the feet get rested. It would be great to meet up if you are around Belcoo. Frankie
Fantastic video! I laughed when you said "I think that's the strongest smell of shite that's ever graced my nostrils" 🤣 I love all your videos but I thoroughly enjoyed that one!
Derek, The pinch blister could be due the Moabs which I find a narrow fit. I wear these shoes daily with no issues but 2 years ago on a backpacking trip on the GR11 I got pinch blisters on both my pinkies for the first time. I had to get off trail to recover. I bought a pair of Injinji toe socks in Pamplona and had no further issues with the shoes. Keep the videos coming
Great video update on your journey Dezzie. Never been to that NW part of Ireland, it looks beautiful. Your battle with keeping your feet sound for the trip is frustrating, I would never have thought of that. Good insight. Is it always something you find difficult to manage when walking?. Keep it goin, great updates, scenery and positive attitude!!
Another very enjoyable episode thanks. You might like to try Injinji toe socks sometime. I find them invaluable, without them my little toe always blisters.
Another brilliant video, thank you. I'm new to hiking and was wondering how much water you carry with you? I have the same little toe issue today, 27km and the toes are in bits. I found the plaster just made the 4th toe form a blister. I was wondering about bursting them, I'm not a bit squeamish. I will now that I see you got relief
Excellent video good points made , have you ever thought of taking ppl with you maybe who suffer mental health or newbies who dont have the courage to do it I'd say youd have a few who would jump at the chance keep it up bud
Thanks a lot Fra. While I often make (and talk about certain things in) these videos to help such people, I do not wish to take on a role of that kind. Cheers 👍
@@fra511 😂 I’m not afraid. I often give talks on mental health to big groups/companies but it’s not something I myself enjoy or wish to pursue at this time 👍
I'm not much afraid of the dark nights alone in a tent. But the thing is that in most places in Europe wild camping is illegal (including here in Belgium) So I am afraid of getting caught. I wish I could go walk somewhere without worrying where to sleep. Maybe it's easier to do that in rural Ireland, but not much in urban Flanders

Derek walks an extra 500 miles... Going back for the camera he left on the ground to get the aul "walking away" shot. 😁
The cry of a vixen on a dark night is kinda chilling as well. And was often mistaken for the Banshee by people of old.. 🐶

Derek my wife says that you would like a book called “The unlikely pilgrimage of Harold fry, by Rachel Joyce”. Really enjoying your walk mate.
