You mentioned the eye being an indicator of it being venemous or not is false. Can the same be said about head shape? That snakes with an arrow shaped head are venomous?
That snakes don't feel pain because they're cold blooded. I was reading about rattlesnake round-ups and the "rattle snake queen" used that as a justification for the cruelty of these animals. It's heartbreaking that people think that.

Yeah, snake charmers used to do nasty things to snakes. They would take a nonvenomous snake and jab a couple porcupine quills into it's head to make it look like an eyelash viper for the show, and of course, said snake would die. They also would remove the fangs of venomous snakes I believe (I read about this a long time ago so I'm not 100% sure), which was also probably fatal and was certainly painful.

Some people are speculating that this will roll into a van on private sale as well, but it is still legal to sell spider bp's privately. The controversy is about the neurological effects on the animal. Spiders (along with many other single gene morohs and morph combos) have a neurological side effect called wobble. It can have very minimal effect on the animal's quality of life or it can cause severe issues like chronic stargazing or the inability to effectively stike prey. Wobble can increase or decrease in severity throughout the snake's life and cannot be line bred to reduce or eliminate the effect. Personally, I think it is silly to ban one gene for wobble when others have it. Spider gets a bad rap because it is the oldest, most common gene with wobble, but some combos can have effects, like kinking, that require euthanasia if they aren't fatal (champagne x spider is one of a handful that is a fatal combo), and there is no controversy about those. 🙄
I accidentally said that for a video once without including that not all venomous snakes have vertical pupils, and I got roasted Good to see people not relying on my brain for accurate and clearly spoken information lol
IMO, that comes from most people being unable to identify a snake at a glance. Let's be real, most people who are not familiar with snakes probably wouldn't be able to tell if a snake is venomous or not, especially if it's big, brightly colored, or simply a species of snake they've never seen before. Show someone a picture of a python (any kind), and ask them to identify the species + whether it's venomous or not. Chances are, they'd probably get the answer wrong, unless they or someone they know keeps snakes.
2:10 That myth prob also originates from how they look. My friend (she’s scared of snakes) thinks they look wet or moist but they actually don’t feel like that.

Can't wait for the next time she mentions that story so I can debunk it for her lol. I love my grandma but she really needs to check where she gets her info from.
Just remember that the elderly are gullible and a lot of scammers love to take advantage of that fact. She may have read that in a rag magazine and, sadly, yes, there are people who believe those because they’re printed media and no printed media would lie to them, right? I remember when the missing kidney urban legend was going around back in the earlier days of the internet and, again, people believed it because it was “printed” information. People can be gullible about a lot of things.
I remember reading the pupil myth in a snake book when i was a little kid, and it was like "this is the truth!" And i was like "that's total crap, pythons don't have venom!!!!"
the myth about the vertical pupils meaning venomous probably comes from central europe I live in Germany and for all the 6-7 native snake species here it is true that coincidently all the venomous have vertical eyes and the non venomous have round eyes so it is an easy way of seeing if it is a dangerous one or not for people who otherwise don't know much about snakes and reptiles in general... as long as they really are just local ones
If I am close enough to see if it has round or vertical pupils and I am not sure if it is a dangerous snake, I am too f*cking close :D I was so excited when I saw my first grass snakes (Ringelnattern) years ago

My grandma used to believe snakes dind't have bones untill I spent a few hours explaining it to her. She also believes not just snakes, every reptile is slimy.
I would just like to point out that turtles and tortoises actually do not have a diaphragm. Their internal organs are all situated in what's called a "coelemic cavity". While being upside down won't instantly suffocate a turtle, it does lead to a much higher risk of respiratory infection
I once heard an exotic pet shop owner tell a family of four that garter snakes are very venemous and extremely agressive, in order to sell them a more expensive snake. The family was quite upset when I told them the truth and the owner of the pet shop forbid me to ever come back.
@@chair362 Some species do possess a mild neurotoxic venom. However, it is not dangerous to most humans. It is about equal to a bee sting, it can however be dangerous if you're allergic to the venom. I am very allergetic to bees and are in a higher risk than some others might be. This does not quilify garter snakes to be "very venemous" since the venom is only dangerous to people who are allergic. I informed the family of this too.
@@Kronby1 right, i shoulda added i knew they were not very venomous, what sucks about venom, be it bee or snake or what ever is, as far as i know you only find out if it will kill you after you've been injected. i have never to my knowledge been stung by a bee so i have no clue if i am allergic.
When I was a kid, a children's science museum had a boa of some kind (can't remember the specific subspecies) that they had rescued. Her name was Buttercup, and rather than being slimy, her skin was extremely smooth.

If you want to hear a stupid snake myth, in one of the episodes of the radio drama _The_ _Shadow,_ a murderer told a bafflingly stupid tale about his wife's encounter with a rattle snake: The snake had one tooth, it shot it's one tooth like a gun, the tooth bullet fully detached from the snake's mouth and killed the woman at great distance....
Congrats on a million subs! I used to hate snakes but I'm more or less okay with them now thanks to you. Wishing the best of luck for you and your business!

"Feets"--we all heard it. Turtles have feets, plural plural. Also--wish you'd touch on "venomous" vs. "poisonous", a lot of people still get the terms mixed up.
I think that the story about the python measuring if it can eat a prey item like a human probably came from a snake-fearing parent trying to convince their snake-loving child not to get a pet snake.
What will I ever do with all this information on snakes when I'm never gonna be able to have one? Oh right, nothing. But that's basically our school teaching us stuff we'd never use irl but at least I'm purposely watching this and not being forced to because it's so interesting

What about coral snakes and "red touches black venom lack", the farther south you go, the less true it is, also, they can be very dangerous, but are usually very shy. Another one is that there are only Constrictors, and Venomous Snakes, forgetting Indigos and such.
i would love to see you do a video on brumation! snake, lizard, gator, frog; an all around explanation would be awesome! i recently saw a clip on our local news station regarding some alligators that froze in the water with their snouts sticking out. well i didn’t see the entire clip or hear it very well either, so i spent the entire day thinking 16 alligators froze to death due to global warming somewhere it normally doesn’t freeze 😂😭 i later googled the article to fact check and found out they were just going into brumation! i love reptiles and would love to learn more about this subject from you, ed, and your scaly kids 💖
i went to a park and the info station said venomous snakes have slitted pupils, pits, and only one scale per row on the tail, and that non-venomous snakes had round pupils, no pits, and two scales per row on the tail. WOW.
Actually to tell if a snake is venomous or non venomous look at there head shape. Venomous snakes will tend to have triangular heads well non venomous snakes don't.
im SO happy you made this video, i was trying to explain to my aunt these points a little while ago and i was skimming your channel for a vid like this
Captive bred reptiles have a super low chance of carrying salmonella (Ive owned 5 for about 3 years now and haven't had a problem but you should always wash your hands after handling any reptile, captive or wild)
Yes, it's a myth. Many snakes will flatten their heads when they are threatened venomous or not. And while many pit vipers will have slightly v-shaped head naturally, elapids like coral snakes will not. You're better off just looking up the snakes in your area and learning to identify them. :)
This comes from the fact that vipers have that triangular head. But I mean, I fail to feel sorry for the guy who tries to cuddle a taipan on the basis that it doesn't have a triangular head so it must be harmless.
Enjoyed this and all the vids I've seen so far; compared to other's snake videos who come across as show-offs that make it all about themselves. Through your commentary and sharing of facts, I have actually grown more fond of snakes and have more of a respect and appreciation of these fascinating creatures.
Brian Barczyk covered that recently.
I accidentally said that for a video once without including that not all venomous snakes have vertical pupils, and I got roasted

What about this big myth: "All snakes are dangerous and will attack humans"?
xXKandy_StudiosXx V E RY T R U E
even if snakes aren't smart they sure are smarter than most humans
IMO, that comes from most people being unable to identify a snake at a glance.
Let's be real, most people who are not familiar with snakes probably wouldn't be able to tell if a snake is venomous or not, especially if it's big, brightly colored, or simply a species of snake they've never seen before.
Show someone a picture of a python (any kind), and ask them to identify the species + whether it's venomous or not. Chances are, they'd probably get the answer wrong, unless they or someone they know keeps snakes.
2:10
That myth prob also originates from how they look. My friend (she’s scared of snakes) thinks they look wet or moist but they actually don’t feel like that.
Actually I touched a snake and it was slimy, I don't know what kind of snake is but I just touch one snake in my entire life
@@alejandrobonillabalderas5629 I think your hands were probably just moist, I've heard before that if you touch a snake before and it feels slimey its probably just you, but you can double check that it was a while ago
Thanks so much for debunking all these snake myths. I love snakes and think they are awesome (and really adorable with the little fork tongue, and how they like to hide with just the head poking out it’s like, WE CAN SEE YOU, YA ADORABLE DANGER NOODLE!) but I still adore how you are so fearless with your snakes, and I just think it’s really awesome! 3:41 wait seriously?! Even as a snake lover I always thought that was actually something that happened because my grandmother would always bring it up like there was a legit news report on it or something. Can't wait for the next time she mentions that story so I can debunk it for her lol. I love my grandma but she really needs to check where she gets her info from.
grandparents are stupid
Just remember that the elderly are gullible and a lot of scammers love to take advantage of that fact. She may have read that in a rag magazine and, sadly, yes, there are people who believe those because they’re printed media and no printed media would lie to them, right? I remember when the missing kidney urban legend was going around back in the earlier days of the internet and, again, people believed it because it was “printed” information. People can be gullible about a lot of things.

One of my favorite Snake myths:
Jormangandr.
.?
@@TacoIntrusion Also known as the Midgard Serpent, it's said to be so large that its body encircles the Earth.
I remember reading the pupil myth in a snake book when i was a little kid, and it was like "this is the truth!" And i was like "that's total crap, pythons don't have venom!!!!"
the myth about the vertical pupils meaning venomous probably comes from central europe
I live in Germany and for all the 6-7 native snake species here it is true that coincidently all the venomous have vertical eyes and the non venomous have round eyes
so it is an easy way of seeing if it is a dangerous one or not for people who otherwise don't know much about snakes and reptiles in general... as long as they really are just local ones
If I am close enough to see if it has round or vertical pupils and I am not sure if it is a dangerous snake, I am too f*cking close :D
I was so excited when I saw my first grass snakes (Ringelnattern) years ago
Thanks for sharing! Old local wisdoms becoming widespread misconceptions is a common base for a lot of modern myths, it seems.
The only venomous snake here is the common viper, so it's quite easy to recognize, luckily.
Here in Italy is true too
IISheireenII it’s the same where I live. It’s helpful If you’re trying to identify local snakes but it’s not good to say for everywhere!
3:19 , i wanted a snake and my mom and my siblings keep saying that snakes will measure up like in the story and when i said it's a myth , she scolded me for refusing to believe the story . I'm not a kid anymore and i know that it's not true :( I'm having a mental breakdown rn and watched this video again. it's okay emily, i believe you :) and i will always support you no matter what .
While being upside down won't instantly suffocate a turtle, it does lead to a much higher risk of respiratory infection
thought the same thing. reptiles dont have a diaphragm.

I once heard an exotic pet shop owner tell a family of four that garter snakes are very venemous and extremely agressive, in order to sell them a more expensive snake. The family was quite upset when I told them the truth and the owner of the pet shop forbid me to ever come back.
i recently read that they are in fact venomous, it's just such a weak venom that it doesnt affect most humans. not sure if that's true though.
I love this channel so much you guys are amazing
When I was a kid, a children's science museum had a boa of some kind (can't remember the specific subspecies) that they had rescued. Her name was Buttercup, and rather than being slimy, her skin was extremely smooth.

I have named my new leopard gecko after Rex.
The way the tortoise looked at her after the second time was like Why you do that? Do it again, I dare you!
ObeyBunny I laughed too hard at this
this isn't a myth but this drives me crazy. Someone asking me
"Oh, is your snake poisonous?"
*Inner rage silently building* "No."
i dont have snakes (yet) but im very annoyed when people call snakes poisonous when they mean venomous. i always correct them. in a nice manner.
But I mean, snakes can be poisonous too.. Probably not those kept as pets though :D (yeah I know what you meant, just wanted to bring that out there).
I know I'm late, but next time tell them "I don't know, I haven't bitten it yet"

My 50 year old unkle beleives the "snakes sizing up their prey" and justified it by saying "snakes live in the trees. They stretch out in the branches".... He also said snakes never stop growing as long as you feed them . he said all this cus i said i wanted a pet snake when i move out.
You: that’s a snake skeleton

"Feets"--we all heard it. Turtles have feets, plural plural.
Also--wish you'd touch on "venomous" vs. "poisonous", a lot of people still get the terms mixed up.
centipedes have lots of feets.

I have never seen a snake yawn, but it was the cutest thing I have ever seen.
I think that the story about the python measuring if it can eat a prey item like a human probably came from a snake-fearing parent trying to convince their snake-loving child not to get a pet snake.

That python in the bed story really gets on my nerves. I own 2 cornsnakes and I have been asked if I'm worried they will size me up 😂
Hey I just want to know why the red sided garter snakes are black with blue stripes in captivity but are red with blue stripes in the wild
Could be the morph of those that are captive bred or even a different subspecies of that garter snake...
It's just a naturally occurring morph that someone bred more of. Much like bullsnakes can be normal or they can be hypo, or axanthic or albino. Same snake and species just a different color mark.

Cool video I had never heard of the stinging myth or the bone myth.
What about coral snakes and "red touches black venom lack", the farther south you go, the less true it is, also, they can be very dangerous, but are usually very shy. Another one is that there are only Constrictors, and Venomous Snakes, forgetting Indigos and such.
Can you do a video highlighting Ed’s big snakes please
i would love to see you do a video on brumation! snake, lizard, gator, frog; an all around explanation would be awesome! i recently saw a clip on our local news station regarding some alligators that froze in the water with their snouts sticking out. well i didn’t see the entire clip or hear it very well either, so i spent the entire day thinking 16 alligators froze to death due to global warming somewhere it normally doesn’t freeze 😂😭 i later googled the article to fact check and found out they were just going into brumation! i love reptiles and would love to learn more about this subject from you, ed, and your scaly kids 💖

How about doing alligator myths? We need Rex content
That story is exactly the story my grandma told me when I wanted a snake 2 years ago. I never got it because if that
i went to a park and the info station said venomous snakes have slitted pupils, pits, and only one scale per row on the tail, and that non-venomous snakes had round pupils, no pits, and two scales per row on the tail. WOW.
Actually to tell if a snake is venomous or non venomous look at there head shape. Venomous snakes will tend to have triangular heads well non venomous snakes don't.
That’s hilarious because almost all species of pythons have pits!!! Lol
im SO happy you made this video, i was trying to explain to my aunt these points a little while ago and i was skimming your channel for a vid like this
I love myth debunking videos. Do all reptiles carry salmonella. if so what's the risk of contracting it?
Captive bred reptiles have a super low chance of carrying salmonella (Ive owned 5 for about 3 years now and haven't had a problem but you should always wash your hands after handling any reptile, captive or wild)
@@_flamingo_8699 Well hand washing is a given. It's just something my mother is super paranoid about. Thanks for answering!

@@aurieamoore5823 That's what I thought lol
Is triangle head = venomous a real myth?
That is also a myth.
