+captaintaco2345 I knew a guy who hated the Beatles and would always insist the Monkees where better. His name was Alex, he was one of those self-consciously edgy dipshits you always meet at college.

Fun Fact: The leader of the Blue Meanies was a direct inspiration to Mark Hamill's vocal delivery when playing The Joker, along with silver screen actor Claude Rains.

+SonofMrPeanut also, none of the beatles played any of the band members. The only beatles member that did not like his voice actor in the movie was Ringo Starr.

While we're on trivia for this movie: Each Beatle came by to be filmed walking. The animators referenced this to create an accurate walking cycle for each Beatle.

+Toby77 c Another fact: that scene where Old Fred tells Ringo to NOT touch the button, but Ringo does anyway, after the film was released several kids would come up to Ringo and say "Why'd ya press the button?!" AND John was the one who suggested "Wouldn't it be great if a Yellow Submarine followed Ringo?" :)

I heard that George Martin, the composer, just passed away.
I'll take this movie as a tribute to him.

George Martin is indeed a great music producer to The Beatles and to my opinion, the Sixth Beatle. Whenever I see this movie, it's amazing and I always sing to some of the songs. At the credits, I quietly say; '"Brian would've been so proud of you boys."', since this movie was made almost one year later after he died.

I absolutely loved the animation in this movie. While many feel like it was rushed, I always looked at the "flaws" as adding to the psychedelic feel of it. Where you would catch a glimpse of something changing and your asking yourself if you saw what you think you saw. Watched this movie the first time about 20yrs ago after taking a few tabs of LSD and it was such a wonderful experience filled with laughter and pure happiness.

Max Mantell The blue meanies in the original didn't scared me,especially as a kid. But last year,I discovered that there was going to be a remake of that film on the Wikipedia,so I was researching if it was true because sometimes Wikipedia can be fake,so I look up the concept art of the yellow Submarine remake. And boy, when I saw the concept art for the fim,I was fine, but it wasn't until I saw the blue meanies and the sea of monsters and I almost *insert poop joke here* my pants.

That was the first sign that Craig McCracken was a major fan. The second sign was a certain episode from Season 3 that was just a long chain if Beatles references, even though it still managed to tell a decent story. Sgt Pepper from this movie even shows up as a rep for the Townsville Police and quotes Help when asking for the girls to make a comeback. Go see if you can watch Meet The Beat-Alls somewhere. It's a really funny episode.

Excellent review! As a HUGE Beatles fan, this film is kind of my life... the animation/ art is stunning, the Beatles and other characters are fun to watch (also a fun fact that some of them were created by the Beatles) and the soundtrack is amazing as always. Another thing u forgot to mention, when the Beatles, themselves appear at the end is fun to see too. When this was remastered once more in 2012, I got to go see it on the big screen and all the many kids/ adults in the theatre had a ball, which is proof this film will last on for many generations. Thank u for the review!

I can forgive some of the animation slip-ups, considering the fact that they made it in less than a year. They didn't have time to fix everything. George Martin was given reels haphazardly and wrote the score from that. It was a rush job, for sure, but it is still amazing.

You know that one movie that is more special to you than any other? Yellow Submarine is that movie for me. Thank you for such a wonderful review. 😊
Interesting note: some of the animation looks a bit rushed because it was - quite desperately! They only had a year to complete the film and even had art students come in after hours to paint the cels. That could partly explain the color switches and such. Still, it's truly remarkable that they were able to make this masterpiece so quickly!

Late 50s boy band. Early 60s rock band. Mid 60s psychedelic band. Late 60s harder rock band than before. Early 70s... non-band (broke up at the end of 1970). Sorry to be THAT guy, but if you wanna talk Beatles, get your timeline straight... there are people who take The Beatles WAAAAY too seriously.
That being said, good job on reviewing this one for what it is... a piece of art and a showcase for the music. You nailed it. I'm getting so tired of that style of reviewing where people just yell stuff like "That guy's BLUE? What the hell, movie?". You took the time to get it, so good on ya.
Also, do you think the leader of The Blue Meanies was sort of a proto "Him" from The Powerpuff Girls?

I really wouldn’t call the Beatles a boy band, since they were organically formed, too headstrong to be controlled by a Svengali-like manager, and had a large amount of artistic control (songwriting, musicianship, production,etc.). Most boy bands don’t have that.

Regarding the images seeming rushed, if you watch the documentary/extra material that may have been released with the remastered dvd, they describe the extreme time crunch put on the creation of animations that i believe were done locally not overseas - and that some many frames were filled in overnight by volunteer art students. I can't imagine this amazing work of art without the quirkiness of it. Oh and dear, you have a typo above maybe? "said to sea"... Thank you love.

Your review almost brought me to tears, but what really brought me to tears was when George Martin died this year. He discovered the Beatles and composed the music for the movie. Although it's my mom who showed me the movie first, it's not her I need to thank. It's my Paulie. I'm gonna go give my Paulie doll a hug for being such an awesome friend to me.

I just watched this movie, and I love it! I’ve even developed a theory that the 1965 cartoon Beatles show is actually the prequel to yellow submarine, with the show taking place 4 years before the events of the film. Kinda in my Beatles era right now 😊😊😊

The only people who hated the Beatles were those of old age from a different era at the start of the 1960s. Those from the jazz era whose ears weren't conditioned to conform to modern, beatnik of the late 1950s grassroot or Rockabilly ----- much less British rockers.

Again, really liked the video, thanks for covering it!

The film was made as they were contractually obligated to make 1 more film but didn’t want to act in another and they were already busy with other things.
As a result actors did the voice work apart from a brief scene at the end where the real Beatles do appear, and of course they sang the songs.
I watched it as a little kid in the 70s and the blue meanies and Jeremy did seem scary to me back then.
I do think overall the animators did a great job of giving it an LSD psychedelic feel as was popular at the time.
I can imagine if you had taken psychedelics such as acid or shrooms and watched it on a big screen it would have sounded and looked amazing.
On LSD or mushrooms the sound would have seemed to envelope the cinema goer and the visuals would strobe pulse and become 3d seeming to come out of the screen.
It is a shame the Beatles didn’t voice it themselves but as I said they were busy enough already, and had become bored with making films after a hard days night, help and magical mystery tour.
As a Beatles fan, I enjoyed it.
It’s not perfect, but it is fun, and hey it’s the Fab Four the biggest band ever who changed music forever and who still influence musicians and song writers today.

Elvis and The Beatles ARE the 2 biggest names in rock and roll, and the only ones to really make movies (even though most of the Elvis movies aren't that great)....Yellow Submarine and A Hard Day's Night are great movies, Help is good, and Let It Be, though not a movie, is interesting in watching the greatest group of all time at the groups ending time.....greatest group, greatest songwriting team, biggest selling recording artists of all time......those 4 youngsters from Liverpool.....Ladies and Gentlemen----THE BEATLES !!!!!!

This is such a beautiful film, you don't even really have to be a big Beatles fan to enjoy it. Sometimes it's even argued it's not a true Beatles film (like Help!, AHDN, MMT) because the actual lads don't show up in any form until the very end scene. If they could have used their actual voices, YS would've probably been one of my "perfect" favorite movies.
