excellent, ive been looking for something like this. This level stood out in my memory more than the others mainly because of this soundtrack. what an atmospheric game, you feel like your there, or a part of that reality when you really get into it. playing with the lights out and the sound up. You can't help but to use your imagination while you play, thinking what would it be like to be here, what happened in this rooms history, whats this for.. etc etc. Ughh, such a great game!

i might be the only one that finds it a bit unnerving, but that's what i love about it, it makes you feel this slight adrenaline rush, this feeling of lurking horror.

I cannot adequately emphasise the effect that this particular track has on me. In my years with the Thief franchise, through my first playthroughs of Gold and TMA to the inevitable burnout I would experience following my obsession with FMs, the music of Casing/Masks has never left my mind. In fact, I would even say that it has become a part of my life, and is something I always end up coming back to in spite of my distance from the Thief games. The best explanation I can give for this is that there is a distinctive quality to the ambiance featured in these two missions, almost as if Looking Glass' audio team managed to bottle something magical into this track and turn it into the form that it would end up taking: a warm, comforting presence captured in audio.
By the way, TEOS, thank you so much for sending me a copy of Wolfenstein 3D via Steam! If you don't mind me asking, what exactly inspired this act of generosity? lol

As for the track in 'Casing' and 'Masks', yes, I feel exactly the same way you do about this track, it is one of my very favorite Thief OSTs and it has always struck me in much the same way. We're not outliers. I cannot tell you how many people have expressed exactly the same reaction to this track. Well, what can we say...It is almost subliminal. It is very vague and ethereal without being flighty, it is also ambiguous...it has that aspect of just barely being there. We're not even sure what we're hearing so, paired with the associations of this giant manor house filled with hidden passages, exotic animal heads, ghosts and precursor masks. Our minds do the rest.
As for Wolfenstein 3d...it was on your list...Wolf 3d was the very beginning for me. It was the absolute first DOS PC game I ever played. When DOOM came out, I was as floored as everyone else, but I had this point of pride that I'd already heard of id Software. I will not attempt to relate what DOOM and Wolf 3d have come to mean to me, and very much still do, over my 30 years as a gamer, this message would violate the character limit if I tried. I turned 40 this year. It makes me feel somehow hopeful to see the real, right proper and true Wolf 3d on someone's Wishlist. I hope as time goes on, people will still engage with Wolf 3d and classic DOOM. Play thru Wolf 3d, do spear of Destiny. Go through DOOM, DOOM II and FINAL DOOM, be bad enough to bring those to heel and then discover all the amazing fan projects that have been made and are still being made. Giving someone the gift of their first copy of Wolfenstein 3d is sota like setting them off on the entire journey I've been on as a gamer...not exactly, and not along the same path, but...for $4.99 it's worth it to me for one other person to at least give Wolf 3d a go. Enjoy.

@@TheEyeOfStone You raise a good point by mentioning the balance that this particular track achieves in its sound. On one hand, it is meant to be a faint part of the background to a degree, yet certain aspects such as the recurring breathing and the high notes (which are also heard in the air tower) bring it to the forefront and provide the effect required to give this track its indelibly unique character. In regard to the community's consensus on this OST and on Thief's music in general, you are correct in pointing out that it is cherished and is still held in high value by many to this day, a sentiment which also applies to the games themselves. Had the legacy of this franchise withered and died, we wouldn't still be seeing a consistent flow of FMs into 2022, TTLG would not continue to have sustained activity in its forums and, overall, nobody would be talking about Thief or the impact that it had on the immersive sim genre. When you put all of this into consideration, Thief is more than just a series of stealth games; It becomes an experience that, depending on how receptive you are towards it, offers you something that you can only get once in a lifetime and elevates you to a new level.
On a different note, I am glad to hear that Wolfenstein 3D had such an impact on you. Plus, you definitely have a right to brag about your first experience with Wolf 3D, as you had the opportunity to see the 'revolution' in video gaming unfold before your eyes through this title. To me, this is part of the reason why Wolf 3D and Doom will never fade in popularity: they are simply too important to die, which is why I think you shouldn't worry too much. With that being said, I have already completed Doom and Doom II though admittedly, my personal experience with Wolf 3D only consists of two maps that I played through years ago, while I have never even touched Final Doom or any of these games' fan projects besides Brutal Doom, an issue that I know I should rectify. Once again, thanks for gifting me this game and giving me the opportunity to look back on one of the progenitors of the FPS genre. Now, all I need to do is to find enough free time to complete Wolf 3D and to go through the rest of my backlog, a task which has unfortunately become more difficult these days...

Comments like yours are why I do this, why I make these videos. Thief is unique. It's not a computer game, it is art. It's one of a limited number of times that the medium of the computer game has served up a legitimate work of art, but it's true. I actually have a bachelors AND master's degrees in fine art, so from a snobby, high and mighty perspective, yes thief is art. Thief cannot be forgotten.

Masks and Casing the Joint...ole Brammy's is one of my all time fav Thief levels, always in the top five, perhaps always in the top three, possibly...and the OST is right up there as well. It is such an essential facet of this level and what makes it work so effectively. There's this play of rising and falling tones which creates a tense and uneasy atmosphere. The place is haunted, you're not alone, those passage ways are perhaps not safe. Something bad happened in there...and then there is the breathing sound. Eric Brosius is among the best of the best, right up there with Bobby Prince and Kevin Schilder, the old grand masters.

@@Brittunculi Long Versions are something I could do...I'll consider that. You mention the bell sound in the Haunted Cathedral, only recently, and by chance, I discovered what that sound actually is. Turns out they lifted that sound straight out of the original Pet Semetary Film, if you watch the scene where he meets the first ghost in the basement, you will hear that sound.

That's my favorite track off of Further Down The Spiral...I never get tired of At the Heart of it All! I can see what you mean...A long time ago I asked a friend, who was also something of an Industrial musician himself about the music / background sounds in this level. He suggested that the breathing kind of sound might actually have been cold water moving through an ice maker line and that the other elements may have been machine sounds which had been stretched time wise, but those were just his guesses.

Yes and no, a couple of the elements of the music and ambiences you hear at ole Brammy's do occur in the Air tower, they are mixed differently and the air tower is arguably more melodic, but yes, Eric Brosius assembled these from some of the same parts.
