I thought everyone did this, but my coworker had never heard of turning the water off while brushing your teeth instead of letting it run for the whole 2 minutes. She immediately made the change b/c it’s such a simple habit.

I slice open my toothpaste/lotion tubes when it feels like they are empty. THERE IS ALWAYS SO MUCH PRODUCT LEFT INSIDE!!! If it is something that will dry out w too much air exposure, I scoop the remains in a Tupperware or little canister, and then use it till it’s actually done.
(And yes, I know I’m using plastic, but my plan is to use up every drop of everything I have in my home, and then make my sustainable swaps 💪🏼)

Yep! Also, the cut corners indicate that there is a problem in design. People like to take the shortest route instead of taking sharp 90 degree turns, and good urban design takes that into account by predicting pedestrian flows before construction

One tip that I have that’s pretty random is for style! Take the time to find your personal style and fits that flatter you. It will keep you more immune to trends (less fast fashion or new fashion buying overall) and it will also help you when shopping secondhand! If you have heard of the diderot effect you can understand how impactful this could be. It is comprised of two concepts: one, that goods purchased by a consumer will be cohesive with their identity and be complementary with each other and two, that if you buy something outside of that core identity, there will be additional purchases of complementary goods that can result in a consumption spiral. Therefore, taking the time to learn what types of things your true self appreciates should actually result in less items purchased and less environmental resources used! As much as I would like to be anti-consumer, understanding the system we live in and working within its rules to reduce consumption can be a really useful tool :)

1-When my foam soap is empty I put 1/4 of an inch of dish soap in it and fill the rest up with water. Don't shake it!
2- I put just enough fabric softener in the measureing cup to so I can't see the bottom.
3- I run a space heater during the day so my house heater isn't using oil to run. We save a good $800.00 on oil doing this.
4- I keep a list of things that need doing and try to only go do errands once a week. This helps me to not buy things on a fly.
5- I brush my teeth with toothpaste in the morning and oil pull with coconut oil after and brush when I spit it out. I save money on toothpaste as well as I get the big jug of coconut oil so my toothpaste last longer.
6- I put plastic on my windows and back door and a blanket is layed at the bottom on my front door to help with the draft.
Not sure how good all of this is for the environment but it has helped me save money.

Another thing I don't do is preheat the oven, and if I have to, I make sure to roast nuts or cook something else in the oven while it's getting to temperature. Another thing I do is turn off the heat when I'm cooking. Our place is small enough that we don't actually need both the heat and the stovetop/oven on.

We fill a 5 gallon bucket to bath with and any leftover we use to manually flush our toilet. We only flush our toilet 2x a day since the internal flusher mechanics broke years ago. And as a cashier at a grocery store PLEASE don't leave refridgerated/frozen stuff out to thaw or spoil!! Give it to a cashier or even just stick it back into a fridgerated or freezer where someone can reshop it to where its suppose to go. All the spoiled food has to be thrown away and more resources have to be used to make new stuff. Back in the 1930s they used what were called straw boxes/hot boxes which are boxes stuffed with straw and blankets and once your roast or food cooking is at a full boil, you put the covered cooking container into the box, cover with straw and a pillow and its insulated and that residual heat would cook the meal over the hours. Check out Wartime Farms video series with Ruth Goodman. I couldn't find a clip of that but its a good series to watch.

This keeps it hot til hubby wakes up (we have different schedules). Love your neurotic thoughts! So I love that you mentioned to pay attention where you walk. This is like 10x more important when using hiking and nature trails in parks and reserves! These native plants need to be left alone plus the erosion creates disturbance which makes it easier for invasive weeds to take hold and wreck the ecosystem. Plus it creates wider borders which effects the environment as well. So pay attention to the signs and stay on trails! People maintain these trails for a reason. Watch where you step and imagine what would happen if 100 other ppl went the same way.

I found these tips while trying to save on the electric bill. Unplug EVERYTHING until you need it, energy is consumed even when devices are not in use (INCLUDING CHARGERS.) Washers & dryers are normally on their own breaker, and most people only wash once a week or less, so flip the breaker when not in use. The same goes for other appliances, my husband and I only shower at night, so during the day the breaker for the water heater is off, then after dinner I turn the breaker on and we have hot water in about 30 minutes. Also, we live in the south and our winters are mild, so when the temp starts to drop I flip the breaker for the A/C unit and we use small energy efficient space heaters to heat ONLY the rooms we are currently using (we each have one.) Why heat or cool rooms you rarely use? BONUS!!!! If you contact your energy provider they will schedule a walk through of your home and give you recommendations to reduce your energy usage!!

    • @alaciawall6406
      @alaciawall6406 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Additional tip, somewhat unrelated...before you move into a new place call the energy provider and ask about the average electric bill, not only is this good practice for budgetary purposes, but it is an amazing indicator on how well insulated a home is when purchasing, since the primary drain on energy is through air conditioning. Additionally, older homes tend to have roll out insulation ( looks like cotton candy,) spray foam insulation is far more efficient at insulating and a relatively inexpensive upgrade that will save you hundreds a year on energy costs.

Cutting your product use in half - great idea! In case anyone didn't know, manufacturers suggest way more than you need . Well, they are in it to make money. Laundry detergent: so much is suggested that it is bad for the environment, bad for your washer and bad for your clothes. My towels kept getting stiffer and rougher. I thought, "I guess I need more". Opposite was true. I washed them without any detergent and there was a goodly amount of suds. My towels came out clean and soft. So then I started using about half the suggested amount for ALL my laundry. Everything is clean, smells fine and is softer. Less environmental impact and less money spent.

What I do is every Sunday for meal prep, after I wash my greens in a big HUGE bowl full of water I use that for my plants. My faucet isn’t always running and I wash all my greens in the water and watch the dirt fall to the bottom. Any little tiny loose leaves go into my potted plants and it breaks down for nutrients.
