- On Netflix there is a trilogy of Fullmetal Alchemist films that are some of the most nightmare inducing and hilarious. Join me as myself and my team lose our collective minds as we explore and review this incredibly strange set of films across two videos in search for an answer to one question... It's always strange to me when Cosplayers somehow have a better looking Cosplay of a character than the studio making a million dollar movie of said Manga.
The difference is cosplayers really care about the source material, the look and costumes.

Mark saying Ron instead of Roy has caused me to question myself in some kind of weird Stockholm syndrome leaving me to question if it was Ron all along......He's just so committed....
I also almost got gaslight into being convince of Ron instead of Roy as the canon name. Mark is getting more powerful in his persuasion skills.

Al's model is actually my favorite part of the entire adaptation. For what fraction of the show it actually appears.
It may look jarring and silly in this live action setting, but that's a good looking model and I actually like it.
I can't imagine animating Al into the movie to be easier then making a costume.

@@schwarzerritter5724it would look bad in action like the Power Ranger monsters/robots, but that's where the cgi could come in and polish the movement. He should be so strong he seems robotic, but have just enough sway to portray the humanistic aspect.
Honestly, this is one of the few anime where it's... weird to see all-Japanese cast. I always imagined the FMA characters to be of mostly European descent with a few Chinese exceptions.
Yeah, I dont get the "casting is good" comment. Amestrians are suppose to be mostly European in appearance, German/Austrian being apparent (confirmed by Shamballa movie and how their government is structured with a Fuhrer), with elements of Middle Eastern with Ishval and Xerxes, Chinese with Xing, Russian/USSR with Drachma, Byzantine/Balkan with Aerugo, Switzerland with Creta. Them all being East Asian casted looks off when the actual East Asian characters appear in the second movie, cause they are suppose to look different and do look different in the manga and anime. Arakawa draws them differently based on their ethnicity and race.But then this just proves even more the level of "quality" this production had when it couldnt even bother hiring actors that looked the part (and especially act the part).

I feel the same way. As I was watching this, I was thinking that this would have been the one time when Netflix or someone could have made an adaptation with non-Japanese people in it, because FMA is based off of WWII and European elements. In this case, it doesn't matter who plays who because it's bad either way, but I think it would have helped with the wig situation and linking the more gripping/terrifying/emotional elements of war if it was cast with people who more closely resembled the inspiration. I mean, Bradley is literally called Fuhrer and has a mustache...
That being said, that casting for Hughes was perfect!
It's a perfect casting for what they were working with, I doubt WB of Japan, the owners of these, would go out of their way to bring in european actors to this japanese production.
Can't believe they flew Markiplier out to Japan, taught him Japanese, and let him play the part of live Action Hughes.

For animated Hughes, they literally just filmed Markiplier and edited him in
LITERALLY the only good thing I ever said about this movie was that Hughes' casting was phenominal. Dude captures the lovability perfectly too.
While watching Oshi no Ko, you actually get that Japanese industry doesn't consider live action movie as something to be treated with respect, but rather as a commercial to promote the original product.
And yet weebs will still defend of the quality of them (despite their objective lack thereof).

no they don't defend the quality of the movies. But you have to consider that 1) Japanese acting is very different from the west... I've seen shows that were very popular when I was in Japan and the acting looks so cartoonish and over the top that the fma movie looks great in comparison. 2) Japanese otaku are on another level. Adaptations are difficult because of you change any scene or cut things the Japanese fans get extremely angry, but if you don't do it at the level fans expect they'll also get mad. But you just can't adapt a whole Manga into movies so sacrifices have to be made. Fans seem to be more focused on bringing their favorite characters and story to life than to adapt and keep the important topics of the storyline..... And studios will work with that in mind, not really wanting to make a good story
So that's why the characters are all Asian instead of European nearly every single human character is European with zero Japanese features
This was such an enjoyable video! My favourite thing about it though, has to be the fact that because mark is reviewing a live action, his anime avatars that he usually sprinkles across his reviews, are also now live action, it’s genius!
I hope when he finishes a series review he watches the terrible live action adaptations like this, I need more live action mark avatar lol
If anyone is interested in some Arakawa’s other work to wash down the fma movies, why not try out Silver Spoon(A manga about farm life and agriculture) and Yomi no Tsugai(her newest big action series about a pair of siblings)

@@Luchiop Also Eckhart just sucks as a antagonist. Her motivations was wanting to go to “shambella” (Amestris) to obtain power, but after getting there she feared that world and wanted to destroy it.
I like how this would have been the only time in anime where hiring white actors was the right move and they couldn’t even do that right
Race relations is kind of a thing in the manga/anime, so why not have all the actors be the same race with different wigs? /s
@@SomeRandomJackAss yeah of course but this is one of those times where the characters, names, and land were based on an European country like Germany. The author and country of origin of the story has nothing to do with the story being told.
Both FMA and Attack on Titan live action adaptations failed miserably at that.

The sad part of this failure of cinema is that FMA is a fantastic story to translate to live action, the fantasy elements are subdued enough to not be a comeplete CGI mess, I'd love this story in live action with a better hand at the helm
Problem is Japanese and American filmmaking sit at VERY opposite ends, so we would've most likely ended up with another Dragonball Evolution. So to avoid that, the japanese decided "fuck it, we are doing it ourselves!" and shouldered all the burdens they would have to bear. Didn't result in an amazing movie, but I prefer it that way.
Had they toned it down to be more grounded and used early 2003 as a bit of a base model both in term of tone and cinematic directing style it might have actually been able to function as more of a military drama with fantasy adventure elements instead of the aimless mess this turned out to be.
Part of the problem is trying to adapt a pretty long story into three movies.
the fact they tries SO VERY hard to make someone's hair match envy's without stopping to realize that it looks awful really just shows that they only have a shallow surface level of whats important. like, make anyone blonde, BLONDE, not mustard flat yellow.
The part about fma being depressing is definitely due to the first anime, like that's the biggest difference with botherhood and 2003 for me, 2003 is just SO depressing
Yeah, FMA2003 basically says “the world sucks and there is nothing you can do about it” while the manga and Brotherhood at least have the hope that we can make the world a better place if we work hard and work together.

@@hootle4641 It is depressing, wholeheartedly so, though I do believe there is a significant difference between the two iterations, ie Brotherhood's "Atone for what you can, choose to do better for that which can't take back" and 2003's "Your individual choices don't matter, you're doomed by the narrative regardless of the work you put in to better yourself and the world"
Agreed. Anyone remember that ending to the 2003 anime? Holy shit, I remember feeling so miserable after that and I only recovered after Conqueror of Shamballa.

I love Mark’s life action assets. Was utterly funny. Amazing job.
The biggest issue with these adaptions is always pacing. There is a saying that perfection isn't when there is nothing to add but nothing left to remove. FMA is really high quality, you cant condense over 13 hours of content into less than 6 without cutting out a lot of vital bits.

i love the "live action mark", nice touch. Also we're getting out of the video game adaptation curse, so i'm convinced one day we will get consistently decent to good adaptations one day, it just need the right people working on it
I would love for you to compare the two anime’s next. Both absolutely great and shine in their own ways especially with the way the 2003 version decided to take the story in its own direction.
He should do this. He could then do a Follow-Up of the Conqueror of Shamballa movie, which as an anime follow-up is fantastic.

@@skoaldipper125 I think part of what made it so solid was because its narrative was originally planned as a second “season” of sorts, but they had to turn it into a movie lest Brotherhood got delayed to the point of its finale not coinciding with the manga’s. Because of that, it does a good job completing the story.
There's a point in the second movie where you can see one of Armstrong's projectile attacks with a visible border that hasnt been properly edited out. And that just says everything that needs to be said about these movies

The worst thing about anime adaptations is there's no balance between source material and live-action. This is a huge issue with not only Hollywood or whoever is making the movie but also with the fans. You either have a movie where they change so much it barely resembles the source material, like the Dragonball or the cowboy bebop Netflix show. The writers or producers thought their ideas would work over the original source material which they never do. On the flip side, you get FMA that follows it way too much, which ends up being cringe af. I find though most anime fans want the adaptation to be identical and it just can't translate, like with the cowboy bebop adaptation, fans were pissed Faye wore a dif outfit, even tho it would look ridiculous in live-action.

I remember someone in the industry once saying that modern anime is bad because the people making it are all anime fans, not creators. It kind of shows in this product, which seems obsessed with replicating stylistic choices and scenes verbatim without understanding what made them unique, or the fact that different media require different approaches.
That's why we have so many terrible isekais

What's so funny about the movies is that if you watch it in English, it's actually dubbed over with the English cast of the anime.

The live action Mark throughout the video is such a hilarious detail
I think a lot of the "suspension of disbelief" is lost due to trying to make asian actors portray european characters. The manga/anime has "asian" characters from Xing that are very clearly stylized as asian. (specifically Japanese) Blonde hair on asian actors just doesn't look "natural" and that ruins immersion. The reason they did this is because the dialogue is in Japanese and I'm sure it was impossible to find natural blondes who look somewhat like Edward/Al/Hawkeye/Hohenheim/Winry and also spoke japanese. Scar's actor needed to have a Linebacker physique. They did a good job on his glasses, scar, and hair, but the guy looks like he just got past puberty. Armstrong's character needed to be an actual body builder. I don't care if the blonde strand of hair is fake as long as he's an actual strongman; think of the Mountain from GoT. The Hughes actor is easily the closest to the character. Mustang and Lust also look decent as well. I do also like how they animated Al in the armor, but of course I'm sure that's crazy expensive to make. All this to say that forcing a "look" on people who don't match that look constantly reminds you that you are watching a movie, rather than getting lost in it.
Styled as Japanese? Man Xing as a country and it’s people, both names, ways of dressing, and imperial hierarchy are very clearly based on china. I think they even use the phrase Middle Kingdom at some point
What's depressing about these adaptations is that I don't think it's a lack of passion. I can tell that they really tried their best to recreate the story faithfully while working with the constraints of a different medium. And it is pretty telling that each time I see an image of the movie, I can pretty much always tell which part of the story this is.
It just happens that their honest best attempt is really, really bad. Which is a lot more depressing than if they had not really tried in the first place.
Passion can only get you so far. The Silent Hill movies were both directed by fans of the series, but range from bad to so bad it's hilarious.

Rouroni Kenshin was the best live action adaptation. Its not the best thing ever but its good. A solid 7/10.

That said, Great Teacher Onizuka had several live action adaptations I really enjoyed.

German, French, Slavic, Italian, Turkish, Arabic, Persian and a pinch of Chinese.
I'd be really interested in your thoughts about the 2003 anime + the Conqueror of Shambala movie. Even if it's not the canonical story, I think they managed to make a very impactful story with some very mature and cool themes. Or maybe it's just nostalgia since that's what I grew up with. Either way, I think you'd have a blast, especially when put against the Brotherhood anime which, at the time, assumed everyone watched the original series and rushed through it's first part, making things such as Hughes death (who's a lot more present in the original series making things a lot more impactful imho) and even Nina a lot less impactful. It's also a more somber series, with less humor and some very serious tones. Plus it's very cool to see them try to resolve problems and explain things that hadn't been explained in the manga yet, such as the truth door, the homunculi, or things such as who Pride was, or Wrath or Sloth whom hadn't been shown up yet at the time, among other things. Please don't sleep on it, it's a grand old time and a lot of people even go as far as to say they prefer the 2003 anime as opposed to Brotherhood, even if the story itself is very different from the author's wishes.
I love the 2003 version. Not more than Brotherhood ofc but it's still amazing. Funnily enough, a friend of mine prefers the 2003 version because of it's darker themes and ending.
I think I love them both in different ways. I think the 2003 is a lot more mature and has more of a somber and serious tone, not to mention the music is incredible, I also really like it's ending and subsequent movie tie-in. I would love to see a fresh new perspective to it, because it was my favorite anime when growing up so I have a lot of nostalgia for it and I absolutely loved its ending as well as motifs it tries to explore. Brotherhood is, for all intents and purposes, the official version of the anime. It's the creator's vision, it's unquestionably the story of the series and for that reason alone it's the better version. But I think 2003's anime hits very differently, not to mention it makes better use of its characters (since a lot of the bigger key players in the series get introduced much later on when the anime had already been finished, so they only had a fraction of the cast to work with) making it feel a lot more personal than Brotherhood in some ways, such as Hughes being far more impactful and making better use of characters such as Winry or Sheska, Rose and even Tucker. It also feels very personal especially when in combination with stuff such as the Shambala movie (that ends the story) and the "Kids" OVA which just hits hard for me lmao, also the music which was, for me, the most disappointing aspect of Brotherhood (not that it's bad, it's excellent in many ways too, but come on, when Bratja/brothers started playing... it gave me chills every time).
Yes!! I’d love for him to also review Shamballa as well! The 2003 version is my preference simply because it’s darker with some 90s grid to it.
Its surprising how much the 2003 guessed would happen in the actual version when the actual version wasn't out. Perhaps they gave the author some ideas?
I agree. I loved the 2003 version a lot, but some things that happened with the ending felt like the came out of nowhere and were just super weird. Looking at you, Rose… disappearing after the Father Cornello thing and then just showing up at the end like you were supposed to be relevant the whole time.
I remember turning the movie on and then turning it off 5 minutes in. You are a much braver man than myself, Mark.

As a fan of this anime really liked that because how people who created the movie threated to the characters not that purly.
Yeah had some flaws, but that was way better than Death Note, Cowboy Beebop and etc. what Netflix do with live action anime adaptations.

FMA/B is tied with OP as my favorite anime, and when these movies first came out, my friends tried ad nauseum to get me to watch them knowing I'm a huge fan, but I treated them like that horrendous DB live action movie and gave em a wide berth. I've been laughing at this video so much because of you to match the Live Action movies, use live action photos of your animated self. It's great, man. I love it.
A lot of Japanese movies and tv shows have a very specific style of acting (and when I say 'acting' I really mean OVER acting) I think that a lot of cringiness also comes from that

Samurai X live action trillogy was good fun and not really bad. If you ever review Samurai X, dont forget the live action!
The Rurouin Kenshin live action movie is awesome and done with care, unlike these trash heaps
It's not a trilogy. There are two more. One for the revenge arc and the other for Kenshin's past that is a total tearjerker. You should watch them.
You know, many years ago me and a friend of mine discussed how we would adapt various anime into live action- we never discussed much about casting or the like but more about a potential screenplay
When we tackled FMA we only really came up with the opening of the movie
The idea we had was a silent black and white montage of Ed and Al' life up until trying to bring back their mom, with occasional cuts to black with narration going over the laws of alchemy
The last scene before the title reveal would be the boys about to start trying to bring back their mom followed by the final law about human transmutation being shown, the screen would then fade to black as the first line we hear from the characters as the title appears is Ed screaming Al's name
The guy in this movie must be RON while the manga version is Roy!

I've never seen the movies but it seems it's as terrible as I imagined it to be.
I saw the first and honestly believed they wouldn't create more. So, when Mark said a Trilogy 😮😮😮
My jaw dropped seeing how dirty they did Roy Mustang, he's one of my favorite characters. I love seeing him try to find Hughes killer and the rage taking him over.
Hawkeye and Scar talking him down with Roy realizing he's in the wrong is so good. I love this show so much, I own the Mangas.
But what they did in the movies makes me want to bang my head against the wall. It sucks because it looks like they wanted to make it close to the orginal but failed to do so.
The only thing I liked about the movie was that in the Neutral Spanish dub Alphonse was voiced by his anime dub voice actor, Johnny Torres, the thing is that FMA '03 and Brotherhood were dubbed in Venezuela but the live-action movies were dubbed in Mexico, but by sheer coincidence Johnny moved to Mexico in the mid 2010s, so that's why he was able to reprise his role
Interestingly, in 2021 Funimation re-dubbed FMA Brotherhood into Neutral Spanish, but the re-dub was made in Mexico instead of Venezuela, so Johnny reprised again his role as Alphonse, they also managed to bring back Edward's original dub actor, José Manuel Vieira, who recorded his dialog from Spain (since he moved there), and Winry was voiced by the actress who voiced the live-action version of the character, Montserrat Aguilar, not to mention that some dub actors who worked in the live-action played other roles in the re-dub. I have to day that the re-dub is better than the original dub, the Venezuelan dub had a lot of problems, though I missed some of the original interpretations of characters like Mustang and Hughes
Netflix doesn't seem to learn their mistakes when it comes to making live action versions of loved anime/manga Not only do they end up looking terrible but they also go change things from it which leads to original fans hating and netflix not profiting from it.

Because Netflix aren't the only one who make live action adaption of Japanese animated series ; Sony and warner make them too .
Most if them are made by Japanese themselves (*cough* *cough* AOT with a Japanese only cast to describe European looking characters).

It feels like the strongest parts of these movies happen outdoors. The moment the lighting switches to interior lighting, the whole thing turns into a meandering slog.
Here's how they could have made these movies better:
Make it more grounded and real, more practical effects, embrace some horror elements as some of these creatures are nightmare fuel, and do away with that Japanese style of overacting.
The "Winry finds out Scar killed her parents" scene shows me that the actress for Winry can play Winry well. It's just the script for a majority of these films needed her to be goofy-cartoony and so that's what we got. Very unfortunate.
People always dunk on Hollywood for adapting things badly but they never complain about Japan adapting things 1:1 and turning it into hilarious cringe bad cosplay shows.
Yeah the American way is lackluster but it is also the only way to even ATTEMPT to make something genuinely good. They simply haven't succeeded much.
Japanese adaptations always try to retranscrire things 1:1 forgetting that they're things that work in animation or on a piece of paper that will not work in real life with real actors whose bodies are more bound to the laws of physics and who are not as colorful and as stylised .

Honestly the acting like cartoons is very common, at least from all the anime live action adaptations I saw, almost all of them did that and it was always a painful experience lol I remember me and my gf watching the Saiki Kusuo movie and everytime there was a scene with Teruhashi and Kuboyasu I felt like I reached a state of true emptiness
Not even live actions of anime, J-drama in general can be like that. I think the only adaption it worked for (for me) was Kuragehime because I expected it going in, but it would be nice if they'd let it go

@Bionickpunk Anime is their biggest export, honestly. But it seems executives of their media companies are as out of touch as ours and misunderstand WHAT makes Anime appealing.

Personally , I only watched this kind of acting in adaptions made by Japanese , in the ones made by americans , actors look like actors and act like actors , they interpret a characters like actors .
While in Japanese adaptations , actoers look like cosplayers , try to retranscript cartoon characters one by one and avoid acting in a good way .
Alphonse should have been a suit/puppet. There's no reason to CGI him. Even as a very limited puppet, you can make an adaptational change to say Alphonse has limited mobility as a suit of armor and I'd buy it as someone new to the franchise. One of the things newcomers struggle with (that GREED even canonically doesn't get) is how poor Al's quality of life is in the armor and showing him unable to easily move (even if he got better at it as the story goes on) would be a way to physically show it rather than exposit about it.

If you're thinking about seeing FMA 03, you should know that the series was made when the manga was getting done with Lab 5 part of the story, so most of it doesn't follow the manga's story. Also, the movie (Conqueror of Shamballa) is the epilogue of the story, but, it's not what the writers wanted it to be, it was heavily cut down, so if you want to see a bit of what it was supposed to be, there's a novelization that's closer to what they wanted to make.

I only got like 20 minutes into the first movie. Based on the characters' features in the manga/anime, I assumed Ed and Al were English, so the Japanese characters in the movie with the fake blonde hair (like they did in Bleach) just looked wrong to me. I couldn't get past that. Normally it's not a deal breaker for me for actors of a different ethnicity portraying said characters, but I'm too attached to what I've developed in my head for FMA.
Hair and eye colour in Japanese media hardly play a factor into a characters race for example ichigo kurosaki is a ginger does that mean he is European? All might or as he is known by his real name yagi toshinori has blond hair and blue eyes is he not Japanese anymore
@@psycho9815 Yes, but the world of FMA is heavily reminiscent of the English Industrial Revolution. The characters all have English names except for the certainly Asian characters from the 'east' nation of Xing.

It’s just so goofy. The bad cgi, the soldiers’ overacting screams, and especially how the prosthetics are too big for the actor to walk properly so he has to waddle after them like a penguin
6 hours is unironically plenty of time to adapt this story. This reads like a film by committee where they have to shove iconic scenes as early as possible to be hooks for the audience, outside of any context or setup.
I mean, you are right about the casting being on point for the most part. Legit, when I saw Live-Action!Hohenheim, I legit almost creamed myself. Afterwards, I was like, "Oh... so this is how yaoi fangirls feel..."

That one scene is good because for the first time, and only time, it manages to tap into the core theme of the entire series: struggling with grief and whether to make war.
Scar kills Nina. Ed and Al can't bring themselves to fight him because he may have been right.
Scar loses everything and everyone and makes war. Later, he regrets it.
Winry discovers the truth of her parents' death and struggles to literally put the gun down.
Mustang hunts down and nearly kills Envy before his companions stop him.
It's hard to make a good adaptation of the film if you don't know why these scenes play so well in the story and why they are linked. Love and hate are not just two sides of the same coin, and Full Metal Alchemist goes to great lengths to show that. In the loss of something or someone you love, you can choose hate and make war, or you can grieve and seek healing in others.
Because Mustang killed Lust and Envy unceremoniously, the adaptation automatically failed multiple other scenes that are tied to that. Scar has no true redemption as a wisened anti-war monk. Nina is killed by a killer. There's no separation between Roy and Bradley. The only scene left untouched is Winry and Scar because to her, Scar is just a killer and needed no redemption but was spared.
One last thing; this is also why the argument between Ed and Al (are Al's memories real) seems like a departure in the original series. Because it is. It's a dilemma that plays at the forefront of everything. And we, the audience, expect it to tie into the story's major theme but were met with the existential and necessary assumption of solopsism: that we exist and know ourselves. As a personal theory, I feel like this was meant to go on longer as a slow burn, culminating not as a fight between brothers but as a revelation through Alphonse's conversation with Hoenheim. Many people grieving find it easier to dissociate with life and events, and the questions Barry brought to Al could have provoked him into that kind of state. A kind of irreverence would occasionally stick out in dialog leading to a mutual separation. But later upon speaking with Hoenheim, Al would realize that he did exist before and still does, and that that trauma he had been neglecting was still there connecting him and his brother.

You know, there is a live action Kenshin movie (Next blind read please?) series that shows how to do live action anime right. It is so good and captures everything I love about the manga and anime. I just wonder what it does that makes it so good as opposed to this. While this isn't the worst, itpales in comparison to the source material

Like you said as well, I feel a common issue i've noticed in live action adaptations of anime is they try to TOO CLOSELY mimic the original scenes, which leads to the cartoony movements that look fine when animated but when in person just make it look goofy.
I watched Jellyfish Princess LA and they perfectly recreated frames from the manga. And it was horrible. Casting was spot on though.
I feel like I didn’t say it well enough. I mean the actors froze in place using the exact same framing as the manga. It didn’t just look ridiculous but it messed with the pacing and ruined the timing on the jokes.

I love when people try to blame netflix for an adaptation that was made and they just licensed to stream in the US. They didn't pay for this to be made. It was made, and they paid to stream it.

I only saw the first movie but all I could say about it was "I barely speak Japanese and the fact I can tell this is terribly acted is all you need to know".
FMA is one of the few anime I've said absolutely SHOULD be adapted in the west. Our budgets tend to be higher, VFX tend to look better (if the studio cares), and...well, simply put, almost every character in FMA is distinctly NOT Asian. Of course there's Ling, Lan Fan, Fu and May and a few other side characters but that's about it. I mean how great would it be if Armstrong was played by someone like John Cena?
It really reminds me of the corniness that takes itself very seriously like other Korean dramas I’ve seen, like the moon embracing the sun, for example. It feels awkward almost the entire time, but something pulls you in and keeps you watching.
It's interesting to hear Mark speak in glowing terms about Mustang's final confrontation with Envy in the manga, whereas I felt that part didn't really work. I get what Arakawa was going for, but
1) Envy has essentially no redeeming qualities,
2) it's hard to call Envy helpless because we've already seen him recover from his shriveled state once, and
3) in context, the Ft. Briggs soldiers are supposedly doing much worse things to much less-deserving foes off-screen.
34:16 To be fair the entire line of soldiers happens in the manga too I'm pretty sure.
I'm probably horrible for this, but I'm willing to forgive every sin of the second film, and possibly these movies all together, just for Tsubasa Honda in that Winry outfit.
