    Isis Gallery presents INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAlN (Some Gnostic Cartoons) by David Tibet
    www.isisgallery...
    Recent works on paper inspired by Apocryphal, Gnostic and Hallucinatory scriptures.
    Private view: Friday 28th November 2008 6pm-8pm
    29th November - 10th Jan 2009
    11am-6pm Tuesday to Saturday
    For INVOCATION OF HALLUCINATORY MOUNTAlN (Some Gnostic Cartoons), David Tibet will install a beguiling cycle of recent works on paper that have sprung from his intense study of scriptural and apocryphal Gnostic and Christian texts in the Coptic language as well as from his joyous exploration of the Canon of Apocalyptic Cartoons.
    David Tibet's visionary drawings are those of the artist as scribe illuminating the contours and spaces of our shared spirit worlds. Tibet's work is profoundly magical in intention and it portrays and describes the dimensions of hallucinatory bodies and their worlds, where writing and image are both fluid and entwined. His drawings are child-like, playful and comical, as he continues his colouring in of the universes. In these spaces the hierarchy of human, animal and spirit forms is dissolved: masks dream of planets and grin at moons.
    The imaginative world that Tibet gives form to is one in which writing and speech are divine, full of promises and threats. This investigation of word and form is rooted in his studies of the Coptic language, as well as in readings of ecstatic canonical and non-canonical Christian texts. However, these ideas are filtered through a uniquely English sensibility that places him in the tradition of such diverse figures as Enid Blyton, Aleister Crowley and Louis Wain. His idiosyncratic and passionate work shines an inmost light on the pleasures and horrors of the divine comedy that we all inhabit.

    I love David Tibet. Sure, his beliefs are kinda out-there, but he's sincere about them and he's clearly come into them on his own (they weren't forced upon him by his parents).

    David's life and my own life reminds me of the Parable of the Lost Sheep from the Gospel of Thomas. Sometimes a child needs to rebel a little, get out and explore the world before we can truly understand the love a father or mother has for their child.

    Current93 is the journey of David Tibet. Thats it! He's been in many places, many stages and in none of those he presentes himself as the bearer of truths. He's an artist not a Vicar, it's incredible the amount of people that forgets this on "both sides of the spectrum", he's referring Christ at the same time that he says he loves Mayhem's first álbum (profoundly violent and non-christic). He is a spiritual person, always was but if you Don't know gnosticism and the concept of simbology, and what esoterism is you wont understand that God and Demons and Christs are not the literal little things that every church tells you...the more quoted gospel by David is tbe gospel of Thomas, an apocryphal one tbat means tbat its a gospel that the vatican tjought dangerous and kept it out of the bible, that tells you sometjing. If you analyze the journey of an artist through the lens of the church you wont ser any artist...he's not there. David talks to you about Christ while he still reads Crowley, if you cant understand the new approach that this means then dont bother...he's NOT preaching, he's describing his experience through the intelligent, unique and mind-stretching view that we'll only be able to get from him. Don't be surprised if the next álbum is about alchemy and numbers or Christ and Aliens or having breakfast with Nietschze and saint Rita at the edge of the world...hes an artist!!

      @jiqian ปีที่แล้ว

      "God and Demons and Christs are not the literal little things that every church tells you..." Yeah except for Tibet saying he affirms the Second Coming, "the skies opening and Christ returning on a white horse", is what will literally happen. Your pseudo-nuance is simplifying his views too.

    One of the most interesting artists / musicians / bands (Current 93) of the last 40-odd years. One of those bands that dispel the notion of 'genre' altogether, their sound is just that - their sound. And it can go in any path depending on how the mood strikes.

    you don't have to be an atheist or a postmodernist to dislike the other world/paradise-obsessed, wrathful daddy in the sky, herd-like fire and brimstone mentality of most Christians. tibet seems like he's a gnostic of some sort, an heretical Christian, which is something I do find "interesting." @EmitFlestiKY WHY?? Christ is love and God is love and this is the greatest Power. None of post-modern, neo-smthng, human thoughts is more powerful than the Bible and alive God. I am proud of David that He's interested in Christ and God and Bible and Christianity. It's not lame, it's the bravest.
    @Maldoror418: Tibet is not weak.. He seems to be very warm person that is strong in many hard moments in his life and i hope he will be praying and keep his faith in Christ. i pray for David

    I’m confused as to what exactly Tibet believes. He seems to have similarities to Gnosticism, but he also sticks way closer to the Bible than most Gnostics do (he thinks the Jewish god is the same god that created Jesus, he believes in the rapture, he obviously doesn’t hate the material world as a whole, etc).

    • @jiqian
      @jiqian ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He's not really "Gnostic" in the usual, Valentinian way... In that regard, his views are closer to some form of traditional Christianity than Valentinianism. He doesn't appear to even agree with the tales of creation of those people (I don't think he has ever expressed thought related to their views on Sophia creating the Demiurge, for example). I think most of his disagreements are over the nature and operations of God and Christ so calling him a "gnostic" is inaccurate. I doubt he belongs to any established Church, though, not the Orthodox or Catholic at least (he's a bit too "unorthodox" for those).

  • @thehauntedchair

  • @Maldoror418

    @ threedotsandadash. Yeah, he was sometimes apocalypse focussed, but not all of the time. He once sang "this is our Law, and the Law of the strong.." It seems like something has happened in his life to make him like this. I've not kept track of what he has been up to, but can anyone advise? He's like an iconoclast confessing to all of his sins in order to be absolved, having previously avowed that it was "better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven". Sad...

  • @BrianGarant
    @BrianGarant 13 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @Maldoror418 Never thought you'd "see him praying / talking about praying" or "harping on about apocalyptic 'crap' like this"? I am truly at a loss. I'd like to be shown a time where Mr. Tibet WASN'T talking about such things. Though his views have shifted considerably over the years, there is no denying that, I think it is fair to state that the subject matter / his obsessions have been fairly consistent as a whole.

    Whats all this fuss about Tibets beliefs ? Obviously he does not fit anywhere, he is just himself. Theres no need to label it. Are some of you people really so fanatical that when someone mentiones anything related to christianity you get all butthurt (cuz christian stuff is not cool or whatever?) ? Just chill

    • @jiqian

      @@jiqian True, I do consider David to be christian. Its just that people usually imagine very specific things under the labels, but he seems to have his own take on it.

      Tibet has said so

    • @GabiGhita
      @GabiGhita 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@maxrush1931 I see that EP as more of a "trailer" for Aleph and Baalstorm. The first piece off there became the lyrics to one of the Aleph songs and later the melody to one of the Baalstorm songs. Not to mention the names of all four EP tracks are recited in order, word for word, in both English and Coptic, at the end of the song UrShadow.
      All the albums from Aleph through Field seem connected in a way, probably because they all seem like long form poems broken down into single pieces, similar to Hypnagogue. You can actually find single-track versions of the full texts for Aleph, Honeysuckle and Field released on/as separate albums (respectively: the first track off Aleph on Docetic Mountain, Drank Honeysucke Aeons and My Name Is Nearly All That's Left), and all three are brilliant listens which I highly, highly recommend to any C93 fan.
      Anyway, if memory serves, the trilogy was initially supposed to begin with Black Ships, but to me it sounds more like it started with Aleph and just kept going from there. The only album I see clearly breaking away thematically from all these is The Light Is Leaving Us All. Whatever the case may be, I'm really liking the more introspective/obscure/personal tone of the releases from Hypnagogue up to now.

    @inversedigestion But that's the main mistake that people can make about God. everyone who seeks real, alive God in our world (not in books or philosophy, except Bible) can see this.God's compassion is greater than His justice. He doesn't want anybody to go to hell, or to suffer on Earth, but He gives us free will. He loves us so much that He respects our freedom. Choice is ours. Here in Poland we have many great witnesses for that, but all in polish language, so i can't show it to You :(

      Peter Seroka thanks for your sensitive answer on my dark hearted post .
      i think love is the energy of the universe and if i recieve , i think i recieve it from there .
      i know many scenes , drugscenes , criminal scenes , right wing political extremism scenes , prostitution scenes... but the most selfish , egoish , hypocritical , phony and materialistic ratrace i experienced in the scene of love , of the love-searchers , the partnersearchers .
      so if i recieve love from universe it pushes me to contact humans , but to bring love down to the human realm just soils it , makes it trivial . and isnt hate ist the answer of the natural law for soiling love .
      i think the inner sexual attraction is the evil , magnetism , evil is sexy , sexual desire is the desire for soil , abuse and humilation , and the way to satisfy a drive to abuse and humilate is sex , so the not loving sadist is loved for this by the love giving masochist , the most mean persons are the most desired , good people mostly are not very sexy . "so you open your books , and you open your legs , so open your heart and let in the badness" you know this song from david tibet ?
      my berlin enviroment for me is an abomination , modern society , so full of slick and treason under the doktrin and religion of "love" . the frigide porno culture , use and consume .
      the tradition of the troubadur i like , their love is religion , but never let down to reality .
      david tibet i like too . but most of his lyrics i do not understand with my english :-)
      i think people have to learn to feel love , and too not be driven down by it , so maybe this is called "love is the law , love under will" ?
