    Okay but have you ever actually spend an entire day climbing on ladders and sweeping the tops of cabinets, or polished the wooden floor on your knees, cleaned out a cast iron casserole, or walked half an hour carrying your shopping home? Back in the early 20th century, daily life demanded a lot more physical activity and regular people had no need or interest in working out.

    • @sarahmarin3203

      True dat! Depending on the cleaning tools available, even dusting and sweeping 2-3 rooms can add 5,000 steps to your pedometer/fitbit count. And those extra stetches and squats done to clean high/low areas all add to the calorie burning.

      Not only that, but there were more home cooked meals and less high calorie processed food available (or fast food for that matter) which cause people to easily gain weight. People might have exercised less, but they led more active lives overall and did not spend most of their time sitting.

    Tbh, the advice from way back when isn't that far out. Walking vigorously rather than slowly is still recommended. Leaving your hair sweaty can damage it. Housework, if done vigorously and long enough, can be great exercise. Regular exercise can increase your appetite a bit (if you're new to exercise) and reducing your calories is actually better than exercise when it comes to losing weight (though you should definitely still incorporate some exercise). The only thing I'd raise an eyebrow at (besides the diet pills) is the belief that women shouldn't lift weights.

    • @ktoth29
      @ktoth29 5 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Over the years I've found that a lot of old timey exercises that people made fun of as a kid like indian clubs, power walking etc, actually make a lot of sense especially given the time and context. On the other hand I think most modern fitness trends are gimmicks driven by marketing fads, which this video shows pretty well.

      "Housework, if done vigorously and long enough, can be great exercise" - this is both true and not true as some of the chores may require you to use moves and posistions that aren't comfortable for your body and done repeatedly over the years may cause more harm than benefit. Also- there is a difference between cleaning up a house and i.e. taking care of a farm. I know many people who were raised on small farms in 50s or 60s and helped with the chores since they were children - all of them have problems with their bones, joints and muscles due to hard work they had to do daily for years. Because no one cared if you were tired, there was work to be done. So the key is to do everything in moderation and being mindful not to harm yourself.

      Full makeup, bedazzled nails, jewelry, and 3 Olympic medals! She was in my original script! (I wrote this--I'm always so bummed when comments say "what about..." when I had it in there originally!) I think because the video focused on non-athletes' fitness, FloJo didn't make the cut for this video. She should certainly be in a future one on beauty icons of each decade.

And as time goes by, we are getting more sedentary so we need to exercise.

      Montse G Kayla Itsines comes to mind just because she is I think the first personal trainer who gained such massive traction by harnessing the power of Instagram back in its early days, really marketing her bikini body guide through the app, and now she’s famous worldwide. She, to me at least, is part of that “fitness movement” on insta that made working out to look lean and to be strong and healthy (as opposed to crash dieting to look anorexically thin) cool. So this video feels incomplete to me as it doesn’t mention that insta movement, Kayla or anyone like her
