- I have shot high ISO all my career and for me it's normal...whilst I know that for others it's not the norm. So here I am telling you all I know about shooting high ISO in wildlife photography, illustrated by a lot of very high ISO shots all of which have sold commercially. Suitable for all levels of photographer. Watch and enjoy!

Hi Andy, wonderful shots, I use whatever ISO is needed. As a side note, I use the highest ISO my OMDs will go to, and use a pinhole body cap with sepia for that 1850s look. Cheers!

New to the channel, nice photos. It would be nice to see your raw file and then edited photos. I am fairly new to wildlife photography. I find focus struggles in low light. I struggle with some soft shots in low light. I also notice colors are not as brilliant. Noise can be overcome for sure with today’s tools. I’m still learning, but that is my biggest obstacle.
Not my focus on here and have never been into that. I just try to inspire and on here that's my limit, on my Patreon channel I go further with walkthrus and help

Yep I have to go to silly ISO when I'm shooting sport's, and it amaze's me when I see people putting there camera's away cos"the ISO gone to far up !" to shoot. carry on shooting you might just get that 1 in a million shot

I agree entirely with you regarding high ISO, particularly in these days of modern mirrorless cameras, Andy. The vast majority of my photography is wildlife, mostly birds, often in flight, full manual exposure, hand-held camera, so shutter speed overrules ISO considerations every time. If the shot needs it to stop the action, I just crank up the ISO.
In addition to wildlife, landscape, family etc, I also retain a life-long interest in steam locos, reawakened in recent years, and your night shot of that GWR tank at the station is a great illustration of what can be done. Steam-hauled trains are a rarity these days locally, and usually I have to travel a long way if I want to photograph them. There are exceptions, maybe two or three times a year or even less, when a special passes our local area, so I try to make the most of them. Your shot reminds me of some I took just before last Christmas on a moonless night in December. A preserved express loco was passing through on its way to and from Edinburgh on a special. It went north early on a frosty, still morning, with exhaust hanging for a mile behind it - great for long distance shots, but the return would be in full darkness, after 7pm. In my old film days it would have been out of the question and if anyone had suggested that it was photographable in motion in the days when I was tripod-mounting a camera for 10 second exposures at a station with Ilford HP4, I'd have said they were nuts.
No more.
I went along to the local station, illuminated only by the LED overhead station lighting, and took some test exposures the night before.
The train arrived, maybe not travelling at its 75mph permitted maximum speed, but certainly not far below that, loads of white exhaust bursting from the chimney. 1/640 second to freeze the motion and 32,000 ISO at F2.8 did the job almost perfectly, with good crisp images. In hindsight, because of the direct pooling of the station's LED lights and the dark paint of the loco, I should maybe have gone to ISO 50,000, but I was still delighted with the results. (Canon EOS R5).
Wow and what proof that high iso delivers. Sounds like you had a blast!!!
Cracking shots Andy. Some months ago, and in order to illustrate how good the OM1 really is, I suggested to an M43 critic, that he should view your 20000 ISO image of the woodpecker. He went quiet after that.

Love your attitude on photographers attitude with high iso,,,,i am a very amateur photographer who likes to shoot all sorts ,,ive went from a nikon d850 to the om-1,, love what its capable of doing ..BUT tend to use auto iso ,, im afraid if i play with the iso manually ill miss the shot ,,would you recommend an average day to day iso setting to stick to as living up in cumbria the weather is very often grey and overcast ,,

I love using high ISO and have been doing so for well over the last 10 years for exactly the reasons you state. Shoot to the right and pull back in post. The high ISO capability of the OM-1 is phenomenal.

@@Wildmanrouse Cheers Andy. This morning, nearly at lunchtime, in the shade, I was pushing the OM-1 to ISO51200 to get a sharp enough shot of a snake with the macro lens and also enough depth of field. I was amazed how good even ISO51200 came out. I pushed the exposure as far as possible and as soon as the red highlight warnings came on, I dialled in 1/3 stop more shutter speed to ensure I am not blowing any highlights. I must say, even at that ultra high ISO the result is outstanding. Shame I can't share that image with you here.

I wouldn't have come back with half of my favourite images from my trip to South Africa without going high ISO. Shooting with a G9 at 4000, 6400, 8000 - I used DxO Photolab 6 to denoise my images, DeepPrime XD works wonders for wildlife images.

Hi Andy, thankyou I've been saying for ages get the shot even if it's high iso doesn't matter. Get as much right in the can,camera. Then if its still unusable then you tried.

Noise and ISO seems to be the only thing Olympus ambassadors want to talk about. they imply it doesn’t matter it doesn’t matter.
Great video. I used to use the Olympus OMD EM5iii and found that if I used an ISO over 5,000 the results were horrible, even with denoising software. I then upgraded to the OM-1 and am confident enough that I don’t bat an eye at ISO 6400. On occasion I’m very low light I’ve pushed it to 10,000 and have been surprised by how good the results are. I’ve never gone beyond that but maybe I should.
I almost always use auto-ISO because I want instant control of my shutter speed and aperture. I have my auto ISO limit currently set at 6400 but based on your video I will push it to 8000 then later to 10,000 if I am happy with the results. I’m thinking if I need to go higher than that I’d prefer to make that decision in the moment because maybe I can open the aperture of slow the shutter speed a touch instead.
My current workflow is to throw everything into a denoising software (Topaz Photo AI works well for me) then do my RAW processing afterwards. The denoising software is so good that I seldom think twice about it and seldom fine tune the automatic settings. The built in sharpening elements of the software also helps with the softness associated with the high ISO.

Everyone has their own ideas and preferences. For professional use I would never shoot the OM1 above ISO 3200 but everyone's use of the images differs so that's cool!
Enjoyed this Andy,it makes a lot of sense. I would love to try the OM system (so much lighter and easier to manage) but we are always being told it’s about the light, full frame is the way to go blah blah! Your photography skill shows that it’s not all about the larger sensor, l really want to embrace the smaller sensor could you possibly do a video about it? thanks.

I have been amazed at the high iso capabilities of the OM-1. I was told that having moved from Nikon FF - D6 and D850 - I’d soon be back. Not a bit of it. Great video.
hi, just getting into photography. is it possible to shoot on manual with auto iso, so i can set whatever shutter speed i need and let the cammera sort the iso out..
Of course if you know the shutter speed you need but rarely do we have a finite value in mind. It’s usually just a feeling. With me I use AV set the minimum aperture and that means automatically I get the fastest shutter speed for the iso I choose.
How much are you pushing it - 0.3/0.7 of a stop or more?

Nope I said I don’t during it and I stick to it. And also during my review of the new enhance function previously. Just my view and others may disagree but that’s fine. I am always relaxed when I present

I think the dxo camera raw noise processing is very good. According to my tests, I have for some photos a better result with dxo and with other photos camera raw is better.

Nice shots Andy, I am never afraid to use higher ISO when necessary. I think if the images are really interesting or have particular features the high ISO becomes a little less of a problem because the viewer is concentrating on what is before them as opposed to tearing the image to bits looking for faults. Having said that if the shot is nothing special then I think the lack of definition and poorer colour rendition becomes more apparent. Shooting to the right does make a big difference. I get the impression you always set the ISO manually as opposed to using Auto ISO is this just because you always did or do you have a particular reason? I can't think of anything easier/convenient than auto if not using flash. Lastly have you done any serious comparison between the noise removal software, again personal preference/subjectivity comes into play but from a personal point of view I find myself coming back to DxO. I admit the Adobe Enhance is very similar but the advantage for me is the DxO is pretty automatic I just turn off the sharpening and sharpen in ACR. It could be argued the advantage of Adobe is you can vary the amount whereas DxO you get what you are given but from what I understand DxO is the leader in image processing. Your views would be welcome.
To me DXO gives artefacts and bits I don’t want in the background. It’s just a gut feel from using both. I’m no Adobe fan or bigot trust me, I just use it because I think it’s the best. But seriously whatever works for you my friend. I set manual iso because I want to be in control!!! Thanks for the great reply I love it when I someone actually watches my videos!!!!!
I don't bat an eyelid at shooting at 12800, and tbh these days is 3200 or even 6400 considered as "high ISO" any more?
The very first pic I ever entered in a club comp, scored top marks, and was shot iso6400 on a 5d3.

the photo at 4:20 looks like my ex girlfriend's hand, only her nail's and skin wasn't quite as well kept as the 1 in your photo.
