Lionel T Dean's 3D-printed gold collection aims to transform the jewellery industry

  • Digital manufacturing could "reshape the jewellery industry," says designer Lionel T Dean, who has created a collection that is 3D printed in 18 carat gold.
Dean designed the pieces as part of a project called Precious, a collaboration between five companies including software provider Delcam and precious metal supplier Cooksongold, which is aiming to modernise the UK jewellery industry.
The first range, which includes items by Dean and other designers, was unveiled in August at Birmingham City University's School of Jewellery.
"We're here today to launch our collection of 3D-printed gold artefacts to demonstrate to the UK jewellery industry the potential of 3D printing," Dean explains in the movie. "Additive manufacturing with metal allows you to create forms that would be almost impossible to create by conventional means."
While the jewellery industry has used 3D printing to create moulds for a long time, Dean says it has been much slower to take up printing directly with metal.
"The jewellery industry was one of the early adopters of additive technology, using it in an indirect sense," he says. "So printing waxes and casting from those waxes. It's been more reluctant to adopt direct metal processes."
One of the reasons for this is the high value of the raw materials. Initially, Dean tried using a regular laser-sintering machine to produce his jewellery, but the wastage was too high. Cooksongold provided a laser-sintering machine called the Precious M080, which it developed together with 3D printer manufacturer EOS specifically for use with precious metals.

Are there any printing services that use gold DLMS machines? Shapeways seems to do more lost wax casting rather than direct printing.

I am a student with logistics issues. I live 8n a small apt. Other than fine .999 silver I am not permitted heavy tanks in ky small residence. I had an Idea: using my Rhino software i use my 3D printer make a positive jewelry piece asvwell as a negative of the same as a mold. If the mold is about 6/8 around dimentionally I can use a PRECIOUS METAL CLAY and a klin. Precious metal clay hardens. Once that happens klin firing is between 5% - 15% shrinkage for the organic clay to burn away leaving metal. I can place the Precious metal Clay in a Delft clay investment cylinder does that seem workable? A 3D printed mold negative from my original jewelery print, Precious metal clay folded in removed once dryed hard -- placed in a clay investment tubing and klin fired??

We assume that a shape that would be impossible to make by hand is incredibly valuable, but if it's incredibly easy to make with a machine, then it will soon be seen as cheap.

Nobody talks about 3D printed items as less valuable. Jewellery. Furniture. Sculptures. Etc. 3D printed items are "cheap". Feels "cheap". Feels "dead". There is nothing to feel proud about. There is no achievement. Mastery. I will never buy a 3D printed jewellery. The totally other thing is highly technical things like rocket engines printed out of titanium.

The design and machine operation requires a lot of expertise and artistry. It takes training and practice. 3D printing is just another tool. Making new forms possible or old forms easier to make doesn't supplant the artisan.

Most of the wedding rings in videos shows that its handmade. But those are casted. They make CAD and Print and cast only. 👍 I'm a jeweller from India.
