If you really think about it, the eyes are always spherical balls with a pupil, with the sole major difference being color, which you usually do not notice at a normal distance. I believe every single characteristic, physical or not, combines to form a window to the soul, which is why good actors can transform themselves into a seemingly different character, not just the actor in different clothes or settings or lighting. A prime example of this is when actors have to act as two different characters in the same film or other media, whom may or may not interact with each other but have distinctly differing personalities or are clearly two different individuals despite having the same face. The skin around the eyes, the expression, would be a more accurate thing to call 'the windows to the soul', was what my extremely talented art teacher had once told me.
