- A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other senior officials suffered a crash in Jolfa in northwestern Iran on May 19. Raisi - often seen as a potential successor to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei- is missing after his helicopter went down. One helicopter in a convoy of three in which Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was travelling was involved in an accident. A large-scale search operation is underway, involving Red Crescent rescue teams, military personnel, and police support units. Rescuers are unable to fly over the heavily wooded and valleyed mountainous area, so search parties are going out by foot, helped by dogs and drones.
