This video was wonderful and perfectly timely in my life. My friend and I just turned something we love (reading queer books and talking about them) in to work (a podcast called Lavender Lit Club) and I’ve been wrestling with that decision. This helped me decide that what we’re doing is necessary and important and good, both for us and for our community! Thank you!

I think it's a little of both. Being able to find something fufilling in work is so important, but it's also equally important to have things you enjoy purely as recreational time. Failing to do either is gonna lead to a burnout.
I voted for Alice, Orin, and Henry to decide Hank's punishment. Because the little ones deserve a chance to torture their father/uncle as Henry has had. I know Orin's still really little but I'm sure Mama can help him out.

I relate to this so much (on a smaller scale). I have a habit of seeing everything as a productive task or work to be done. Reading books just to have read them, learning something new so it can feed into my professional skills, creating something just so I can add it to my portfolio rather than just creating something for fun. I'm a graphic designer so my creativity has all basically become my work, and I've found I don't have hobbies anymore because my interests have turned into my job.
Interloper is one of my favorite words simply because I so often feel like one, and I'm thankful that nerdfighteria has become one of the few places where I don't feel like an interloper, and I can't thank you enough for that gift. Thank you.
Hank you are nothing if not the hardest working person I know. I aspire to be like you, and a lot of people do. In respect to line between work and life: my grandfather is my biggest inspiration, and always will be. He passed away last year at 88, and he worked 5 or more days a week every week of his life until he died. He found his passion in art in 1973 at the age of 44 when his lumber business collapsed, and he was supporting a wife and 3 kids off of unemployment checks and odd jobs. At a time when most people should’ve turned around, he chose to dive deeper into his passion. If it makes you happy it is worthwhile. Work shouldn’t be life by default but it can be life for those of us fortunate enough to love what we do and who we do it with. I think you’re blessed with both of those things.

I made a Haunted House "Choose Your Own Adventure" book for one of my graduate classes. That was the first time I turned work into something I love. I'm a huge horror and Halloween fan, and I poured myself into this book! Its set up scrapbook style, so the pages were handmade. I loved seeing people play it, when I brought the book to class, and yell out their results. I felt like I made something good, and fun, that brought people joy! It also showed me possibilities. I'm an archivist and librarian, now, and I'm really passionate about using my degree to do life changing and fun things for the community. Its not just shelving books!
I think the saying goes "Make a career out of something you love and you'll never work a day in your life." And I think it can (and probably should) be true for each of us. Thanks, Hank and John - I deeply enjoy what I've learned through your media!

We tend to overwork as a means of self-escape, as a way of trying to justify our existence." - - Many of the topics both you and John have brought up of late have reminded me of this work.

Yes, work is part of life and enjoying what you do is the trick. Hank and John are a happy place for me. When I feel I need something positive and up lifting, I watch them. They never disappoint.
In Free Agent Nation, Daniel Pink talks about how work/life balance is kind of a corporate concept, and that if you are doing work you enjoy on a freelance basis, it will naturally intermingle with the rest of your life because, as you say as well, work is a part of life. Also, I used the same "reading is work!" excuse when I became a contributor for Book Riot (and have the same complicated relationship with the ideas you mentioned in the video).
I also think the same is for work and play. They can really be one if we make how we play efficiently a source of value. Do you think it makes sense to only treat them as separate?

He sells his labour and uses capital to enable the extraction of labour. In this case his own as well as other peoples labour. He still accumulates wealth through labour, but at least a small part of it is his own (And I mean small in the sense that complexly employs a lot of people and most certainly not in the way that he doesn't work much, but even Hank's day has only 24h) Sorry for the bad English, my native language isn't English and the topic isn't quite easy

Ownership, individual or collective of the means of production, means worker (which we all in a way are) get reconnected with their work and have a chance of seeing it as more than just a set of repetitive tasks and hours to be wasted.

I totally recognise myself in the complete failure in separating work and "life". I always found this problematic, until I embraced it. Now, I got a PhD and a tenure track position, focussing my life on designing games, play and playgrounds! I get to communicate my knowledge for free to all that are interested, and I'm finding ways to present it even further through channels such as TH-cam. And my employer says "good work"! I literally punched the air when you said census. I love that shit and can't wait for the analysis video. Also, you really touched me with how you describe the dynamic between you and your brother, and I feel I have that with my sister. Makes me feel blessed.
Hank is my role model for conscientious entrepreneurship. It's so easy to get lost in "this is a cool idea" or "this will make money" that I sometimes forget to give the "this will do good" ideas my attention.
The only thing I got out of this video is that even though we are fundamentally alone, the only way to truly know ourselves passes through communicating with the people that know us and we care about
Thank you for this, Hank. I've been out of a job for way too long now and I'm scrambling to find something to do that pays enough to cover the bills. I feel very similarly about my work and my life. I've been really lucky to have the time and resources to do what I want, and it can easily devolve into me making everything into work and getting burned out. I've been trying to take a wider look at what I want to do and filter as I go along. Thanks for sharing Hank!
It’s good that you can find joy in putting the things you create out into the world. It may not be traditional work but anything you put time into is work and should be valid to you and everyone who enjoys it.
This was such a great video to have the census in, because it perfectly encapsulates what I love so much about you and Nerdfigheria, and reminds me why I'm still hear after so long and with such a quiet relationship to the community. Thank you for shortening the census! Because of all the work you put into the community, I've always been happy to fill out the whole freakin' thing. That said, there have definitely been years where it's felt like the (not fun) type of work. Also, you hit the nail on the head with the whole our culture (and I'm not sure how specific this is to America) values working and careerism so highly, that calling things you love to do "work" actually makes you feel more comfortable and less guilty about doing it- which is you know, bizarre.
HANK. This is not a problem, you are living THE DREAM. As a creative individual working in a creative field, I do it mostly for the love of the job, for the short bits of joy I get amidst long working hours, I do it even though 90 percent of what I do may be dull and repetitive, the 10 percent is still worth it for me. How I wish I can make what I do into what I love most of the time! This is the ultimate level of work/life balance, to not see it as seperate! Because we work most of our lives, it's a true joy to be able to enjoy our work.

This is super interesting, Hank! Somehow you have found the reverse of the phenomenon that when something one does for fun becomes "a job" that all the joy gets sucked out of it. Instead you intentionally create a work-oriented reason to do the things you love and that no only doesn't spoil them for you, but seems to give you license to indulge.

my last two years of college I did a research project about identity and video games, thus making playing video games and talking to people about them "homework". it was amazing and I made some very good friends be doing this (as well as bumping up my gpa because I really cared about the work I was doing. now my dream is having a homestead/halfway house/summer camp? thing? and I have some good people checking my ideas and making sure I don't overwhelm myself.
So Hank’s job is 40 jobs, but none of them are work? Nice.

@@armorsmith43 It plays an important part because he himself gets to decide what to do, how to do it, who to do it with (to an extent), why to do it and what to use the results for. Ownership, individual or collective of the means of production, means worker (which we all in a way are) get reconnected with their work and have a chance of seeing it as more than just a set of repetitive tasks and hours to be wasted.
@@melonlord1414 Self employed people (working on their own and not employing others), are actually classless. In the ideal marxist society (almost all different types of marxists agree on this) the workers collectively own their own means of productions. The board of directors as well as the cleaning ladies together are in control of their labour, essentially they are collectively self-employed.
I totally recognise myself in the complete failure in separating work and "life". I always found this problematic, until I embraced it. Now, I got a PhD and a tenure track position, focussing my life on designing games, play and playgrounds! I get to communicate my knowledge for free to all that are interested, and I'm finding ways to present it even further through channels such as TH-cam. And my employer says "good work"! Makes it hard to see where employment ends and spare time begins.

I took the census! Wished it had an “I’m a social media hermit” option.
Hank is my role model for conscientious entrepreneurship. It's so easy to get lost in "this is a cool idea" or "this will make money" that I sometimes forget to give the "this will do good" ideas my attention.
The only thing I got out of this video is that even though we are fundamentally alone, the only way to truly know ourselves passes through communicating with the people that know us and we care about
Thank you for this, Hank. I've been out of a job for way too long now and I'm scrambling to find something to do that pays enough to cover the bills. This encourages me that someday I'll be able to do my "work that doesn't seem like work," whatever that is. I really need to be busy doing something helpful to others.

I feel very similarly about my work and my life. I've been really lucky to have the time and resources to do what I want, and it can easily devolve into me making everything into work and getting burned out. I've been trying to take a wider look at what I want to do and filter as I go along. Thanks for sharing Hank!

It’s good that you can find joy in putting the things you create out into the world. It may not be traditional work but anything you put time into is work and should be valid to you and everyone who enjoys it.
This was such a great video to have the census in, because it perfectly encapsulates what I love so much about you and Nerdfigheria, and reminds me why I'm still hear after so long and with such a quiet relationship to the community. Thank you so much for this perspective both on a major issue in all of our lives, and also on the history of this thing that we all love so much. Thank you for shortening the census! Because of all the work you put into the community, I've always been happy to fill out the whole freakin' thing. That said, there have definitely been years where it's felt like the (not fun) type of work.
Also, you hit the nail on the head with the whole our culture (and I'm not sure how specific this is to America) values working and careerism so highly, that calling things you love to do "work" actually makes you feel more comfortable and less guilty about doing it- which is you know, bizarre.
HANK. This is not a problem, you are living THE DREAM. As a creative individual working in a creative field, I do it mostly for the love of the job, for the short bits of joy I get amidst long working hours, I do it even though 90 percent of what I do may be dull and repetitive, the 10 percent is still worth it for me. How I wish I can make what I do into what I love most of the time! This is the ultimate level of work/life balance, to not see it as seperate! Because we work most of our lives, it's a true joy to be able to enjoy our work.

This is super interesting, Hank! Somehow you have found the reverse of the phenomenon that when something one does for fun becomes "a job" that all the joy gets sucked out of it. Instead you intentionally create a work-oriented reason to do the things you love and that no only doesn't spoil them for you, but seems to give you license to indulge.

The work/play distinction makes me think of this quote by L.P. my last two years of college I did a research project about identity and video games, thus making playing video games and talking to people about them "homework". it was amazing and I made some very good friends be doing this (as well as bumping up my gpa because I really cared about the work I was doing. now my dream is having a homestead/halfway house/summer camp? thing? and I have some good people checking my ideas and making sure I don't overwhelm myself.
