    Is Seattle a dangerous place? People have been warning me to stay away from Seattle. But is it that bad? Today I returned to the Capitol Hill neighborhood to see for myself if the area has changed. A few years back, I used to hang out and shop in Capitol Hill. So I headed to Volunteer Park. A large and beautiful tree lined park.
    I walked down to Macrina Bakery to get a coffee and a pastry for breakfast. Macrina Bakery has long been my favorite local bakery and it was just as good today.
    I also walked down and got a closer look at the Space Needle across the city.
    There was one person snooping around my van. But other than that, Capitol Hill seems to be a nice, safe neighborhood.

    My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
    Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

    I love Seattle, it was my dream city to move to for a decade, I finally got out there in 2016, during covid it took a really dark turn, at night downtown was like something out of a post apacalyptic movie, windows boarded up, homeless everyone, even one guy with a chain swinging it around yelling and hitting things. I know it wasn't always that way, and it breaks my heart as it's so beautiful and has such potential to be one of the best cities in the country, I have heard they are taking measure to fix it up. Sadly back in 2021 my mom passed so i moved back to Georgia to be closer to family, though I am wanting to move back when I am able.

    Last weekend my husband & I picked up my son from SeaTac. He is in the USCG & had a layover for a few hours flying between Alaska & NC. Someone did a smash & grab and stole all of my sons bags & military gear from our car while we were having a meal. I think Seattle, like most large cities, has gone downhill.

    I spent a couple days in Seattle. Like any other large city it has its elements of people with bad intentions. In all cities we just need to be cognizant of our surroundings and keep our heads on a swivel. I see people walking around with headphones on or ear buds and not paying attention to their surroundings; or those who are on their cell phones completely oblivious to the environment. I loved the excitement that Seattle generates and its charisma as a major hub.

    Very interesting video and nice to see you make it on such a beautiful rare sunny day in seattle. My wife and I moved here in the late 80s. We've seen the good and the bad that a big city can offer in those decades. We bought a house up north in snohomish about 25 years ago in a brand new development at that time. What has surprised me the most is that the price of homes have skyrocketed in that time. Home unaffordability has helped exacerbate this homeless crisis. I remember driving with my wife around Capital Hill and Queen Anne during the christmas season and looking at all the old homes decorated so beautifully with lights. We would go out to dinner and then drive around the city for a while. We lived on Beacon Hill then. Seattle is a beautiful city and I hope it can be saved.

    Those little Piezio Start Butance (fuel canister looks like spray bottle and lay flat) are nice. Very portable and convenient. Sometimes I take butane stove on my bicycle to somewhere I feel like cooking something while watching sunset. U can set it on a park BBQ thing and cook there. I never keep propane / butane indoors. If it leaks outside just wastes the fuel but inside very dangerous(might accidently drop small fuel cannister). Spent a few days in Seattle 20ish years ago visiting friends. Seemed neat. Road the Monorail. Went to Folk Life Festival which was very good. Took ferry to one of the islands. Kayaked/caned on some city park were traffic overpass went above. I like to visit the science museums and hope they aren't super little kid only focused and enjoy the planetarium shows. The Science museum I went to in Seoul Korea and Glasgow Scotland is too little kid only focused. Haven't been to Lawrence Hall of Science in a bazillion years. North Capital hill is a pretty wealthy area. Start heading south around seatroit central comunistity college indoctrination center and Yessler terrace, you'll start raising your trouble chances quickly. A few years back, a body was found in the Volunteer Park water holding tank requiring extra chlorine for a few days . Chicago is the murder Capital of the US and possibly the world, but all large cities have their problems. As you say, don't go looking for trouble and you'll be fine.
    Makrina bakery is good, fortunately upscale grocers sell their breads. Essential Bakery is a treat too. Butter Pecan rolls or my favorite, the bread Pudding Muffins. Take care.

    I had a thought. Have you tried Cold brew? I've tried all the different ways of making coffee and tea over the years, and when I found my way to cold brewing I rejoiced! It tastes so much richer, smoother, with more flavor, much better notes. And when you want it hot, you just heat it quick. It's so simple too. Like filling a rumble jar with coffee and water, putting it in the fridge, and a few hours later, it's coffee! Plus you don't have to heat up the van with the stove, and you can use your plug in kettle with the cold brew to make it hot! Perfect for warm weather!

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve tried several cold brew coffees and not liked any of them. To my taste buds, they lack nuance. I actually loathe cold coffee so I’d want to heat it up. So cold brew isn’t ideal for me.

      @greeneyedggirl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StaticCamperVanah,makes sense to me! My coffee tastes are not nearly as refined or cultured as yours, so that I fully understand and appreciate. I only suggested it because I thought it would cut down on how much you had to use the stove in the warmer weather.

      @StaticCamperVan  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes I make coffee because of the process. If I’m stressed about something, taking the ten minutes to boil water, grind coffee and brew really relaxes me.

      @@StaticCamperVan oh my yes, this has a long tradition going back to the famed "tea ceremony" of anxiety japan. It's the entire concept of mindfulness, that relaxed meditative state of doing things step by step, savoring the moments of each step as it then leads to the next one! It's a great way to do coffee, and forgive me for forgetting that you do that. We had talked about it once before! You're an uncommon man Scott, good for you! *And yes, that was definitely a compliment!

    Thank you for this. I’m guilty of letting fear-mongers get to me and cause me unnecessary anxiety about certain parts of the world. I haven’t visited Seattle since returning to the west coast this year but I look forward to it when the time comes. I’ve visited a handful of times and never had any problems. But I have had my door handles jiggled and been approached by shady people in areas that I felt were “safe”. I guess the lesson is that pre-conceived notions don’t do us much good.

    Don't know if you are interested or not, but Nomadic Movement has just planted their own coffee plants on their land in Panama and started a COFFEE FARM. Makes total sense as they were buying coffee from native farms for some time now. Just thought I would let you know even though you weren't interested in buying coffee from them, you might want to follow their progress. It is fascinating to me even though I can't even drink coffee, any more. Just FYI. The very last video tells about it.

If you come back the area around Magnolia Park is quite nice, as is North Ballard, Madison Beach and Wedgwood. I wish the Nissan e-NV200 was available in the US; it would make an ideal vehicle for small vanlifing - put some solar panels on the top and take you where the sun powers you to go.

    So right, even small towns have sketchy areas so key is to stay in more upscale areas. I really like your van set up but the only drawback I see is it's not a hybrid. I could sleep easily in 80 but vehicles can get 20-30 degrees hotter than outside so my only option would be a Sienna hybrid so to stay cool & warm. Only thing is the hybrid battery wears out quicker & OEM would be 4k & you lose a lot of sq. footage. Always pros & cons so no perfect solution.

    I totally respect your guys opinions but as someone that takes public transportation is Seattle every day, the city is not safe. There is constant open drug use on buses, on the streets and on the trains and the homeless get to take all public transportation for free while working Seattle residents have to pay 2.50 per ride and trust there children to take the buses to school sitting next to the drug addicts and criminals. Going to one of the nicest wealthiest parks in Capitol Hill is a horrible example of what the majority of Seattle is like. If you want a true example of Seattle danger don’t go to rich suburbs???
