    Thanks for explaining the right hand picking pattern which a lot of other videos on repeating licks don't explain and I think it's half of what it takes to learn them.

      Seth Velsey Absolutely, in my experience that's where a lot of people go wrong when trying to play fast, so I thought it was worth going into detail on the picking technique.

    Hands down the best and most enjoyable instructional videos I've seen on youtube. Thanks for taking the time to put these up, I really appreciate it.
    While it's a great idea to use your little finger to the same extent you would any other fretting finger, it's also fine to choose not to use it in given context - not a cop out, crutch, or constraint in any way shape or form. To imply that it's improper technique in the context of these particular licks - well, I think that's a stretch.

There will always be someone there to put you down for reasons of their own. But people like this has only encouraged me to work harder. Tell me i such at something I love to do. I'm going to work my ass off to improve even more. So with respect to your comment. Who is the one that really gets the thumbs down. We know who we are .

    regarding the pinkie, yes it's there to be used, proper technique by the classical teachers would punctuate this but they are training for consistent precision, fluidity, and speed. Another commenter mentioned Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Nothing to diss these creative players as well as Gilmore (one of my favourite guitar players) and many blues players, but finesse and speed in the genre of Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, Phil Keaggy and the jazz guitarists is not what these talented players are about. S.R.V. was considered a great blues player by many but three fingers stretching four frets requiring a lateral movement of the hand obviously requires more time to reach the destination than a finger which is already millimetres away from its destination. If blues and classic rock is all you want to play, then go to town with three fingers. If you want to shred and/or elicit fast passages and do so consistently with finesse and precision then take the time to develop proper technique. Watch and listen to the speed passages of Gilbert, Vai, Gambale, and the jazz players. They don't require thick gobs of distortion while playing fast in order to smoothen out and conceal timing and other errors. Enjoy the journey. J

    • @acpg
      @acpg 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, well put - agree with most of that. No right or wrong here as long as it works and sounds good. I'd certainly get my pinkie involved for more complex licks, particularly where stretches are involved.

    I play Lick No.2 using upward economy/economy picking. Basically up(E)/up(D)/pull-off(B)/up(A) and then repeat indefinitely at high speed.

    • @pud354
      @pud354 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting, you're using a hammer-on to and a pull-off to play all the notes on the B string.
      It'll definitely get less sloppy if you practise slowly and bump up the speed gradually. Maybe find music you can slip the lick shape into so you don't get bored practicing it over and over again.

      Yes, and occasionally I get a little rattle from the D-string after the g-string bend. I find that using my palm to help mute the g and d string, and using my playing hand index finger to help mute the g string silences this pretty well.
