In this episode, Nikhil discusses the SCO Summit in Astana and PM Modi’s decision to skip the event.
Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) meeting has begun in Kazakastan’s Astana. Foreign minister Dr S. Jaishankar is representing India. Earlier, PM Modi was expected at the summit. But, he changed his mind at the last moment. Government sources cite the busy schedule of PM Modi, however many claim that India is not very sure about SCO. Also, Belarus, which helped Russia launch its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, will become the latest authoritarian state to join the club. Last year, Iran was included in the grouping, and Pakistan is already a member. Since it has become a familiar turf for Chinese expansionism, India is losing interest in SCO. Last year, it hosted the summit virtually. This year, PM skipped the event. However, He is visiting Russia to meet Putin on July 08.
Founded in 2001 to combat terrorism and promote border security, the SCO has grown in recent years in line with China and Russia’s shared ambition to counter what they see as US “hegemony” and reshape the international system in their favour.
