    I will mention this...from experience!
    When you ACTUALLY get into a confrontation, you DO NOT HAVE TIME in your mind to go thru an 'inventory' of techniques! You DEPEND on basic "muscle memory" movements and core body movements!
    SO...for students, start slow, but work on PERFECT MOVEMENT FIRST! Make the muscles "remember" the movement CORRECTLY! NEVER 'practice' with sloppy or 'halfway' movements! As you get the CORRECT movement committed to memory, then add speed gradually, while continuing to discipline your movement. As you increase speed, start STRIKING something! A 'heavy bag' in your garage of basement, a Tree in your backyard, Wrap a post on your patio with an old blanket...whatever you come up with. BUT HIT SOMETHING! HARDER and HARDER! Until you get POWER and "Instant Reaction" into your mind and body at the INSTINCT level, you are not yet "ready" to effectively defend yourself!
    Get one or 2 blocking moves for "high, middle, and low" down STRONG, with at least 2 follow-up moves (strikes and/or hooks)...then you can continue to 'expand' your knowledge and skills over time. An attacker is almost always going to be stronger than you, and already mentally prepared for the attack. YOU will NOT defeat them with a weak 'swat' of your cane...
    [Also get STRONG with the "hammer fist" strike, and an open-hand SLAP! They are a lot more effective, and safer for your own hands, than a 'traditional punch'..]

      As an older black belt (Kenpo, Hapkido, mma, wrestling) and ex bouncer who now uses a cane. I can tell you thos is very sound advice. Also, remember that most attacks are very sudden, savage and violent. Look up advi e on TH-cam on how street fights work or the anatomy of a street fight. Learn how to avoid the sucker punch which is how most attacks will start. Learn the signals of how a potential attack will happen and when to use a preemptive attack. Good luck everyone in your training.

      true. But the more you practice the moves, the better your muscle memory will react. The goal is that they become your reflexes. So now how your basic reflex is, and work on that to adapt accordingly. complex moves are irrelevant and just for fun/show

    This system is fascinating. I was there at its creation in the 1980s in Nevada when Soke Dave McNeill created it and researched the various woods and I heard directly from him what inspired him to create this system. Also we are the recipients of his hand carved canes.

    The cane you held looked a little bigger than a standard 1 inch. Do you manufacture those? If so, I may be interested in just a bent, and carved unfinished hickory core, { from the very center of the tree, and I could finish it myself. }

    I am a two time stroke survivor. Can this system be use to gain control of a movement disorder which start at about the six month point of my healing journey? Are there any practitioners in the warren/Youngstown area of OHIO?

    This is a really good program. Some critiques: 1. Don't ever try to reason with a mugger, only take action. 2. Yell fire or rape, not help; nobody responds to someone calling for help.

    I used a cane for several years, until I was able to have some corrective surgery. Since I am still physically over 210 lbs, and rather muscular, I was not as much of a "target" as many people over 50. But I still thought often of ways I could use my cane in defense, if necessary. I developed a hook device that I could use to hang my cane off of my belt, rather than my pocket, because the cane would hit the floor if I bent over or stooped to pick up something. My 'invention' would move the tip of the cane in the direction of my hips, so it would move backward if I bent over, and would remain hooked on my belt.
    At the time, I had returned to college, and no "weapons" were allowed on campus...but I always had my cane with me! (-;

      +Floyd Burdett Do you still the hook device invention & are selling them?
      I always have problems with where to put the cane when I need both hands or how to keep it from fall on the floor while I'm seated for a long time like at Church, that may require two devices one for standing & one for while your seated ?

    Here's the deal a cane is a distance weapon you don't want someone to get close to you . YOu best bet is try to beat the crap out them with the cane. If someone gets close to you what you are going to be doing fighting someone from taking the cane from you . And if you legit need it to walk and if you are old you are not going to win that battle.

    Hello everyone,
    It has been a long time since I have checked in on this video since I have moved the Channel over to I Cane Do, so if you are interested in seeing more techniques with the cane please check it out.
    In response to the comments below.
    Floyd, I am glad you made a hook to carry your cane with, you may want to contact GM Shuey about merchandising the devise through his site. As for the learn a limited number of moves well, I agree 100%. I believe a person should start out with "bread and butter" moves, ones they can use instinctively in a combat situation. As for your concern about "a weak swat", at no point do GM Shuey or I advocate using a weak swat to finish an opponent. While practicing a partner you are going to have to stop the hit and not "finish" the swing, assuming you are not looking to injury your partner. In my classes I have the techniques practiced in the following pattern: Individual (basically in the air by themselves), target (generally on a BOB or WaveMaster), partner. During the individual and target segments they are trained to follow through and use the appropriate amount of force to stop the opponent. In the partner phase of the practice they must exhibit control and not make contact with the training partner. I am going to assume the reasons for that need for control do not need to be explained.
    What you see in the video mainly the partner drills so control was needed.

    This kind of crap can get people injured or killed. Muggers/thieves, criminals HATE people resisting. So unless you are REALLY good at it, don't even think about it.

      When I'm out with my mom or dad, I take the cane. Your opinion is ok I suppose, but personally, I disagree with you. Both parents, and myself ARE pretty good with the cane. We practice regularly. PS I also have a carry permit. Yes, I carry. PSS My dad is 81 and mom is 77. Practicing 45 minutes daily is good exercise and I also bought an 80 pound fighting bag which I hung in the basement.

    Canemaster has screwed up every order i have ever made from them. I order 5 videos 3 of the 5 they sent where not the videos i had ordered. I ordered a cane it came with a big gash down it. it's outrageous, and most of the videos the quality of the videos are awful set to music that sound like 70's porn and they rarely show technique in full speed it is always overly telegraphed attacks in slow motion. the exception is street techniques 2 that was a good video.

    Brilliant! I work with seniors who are not interested in "exercise" so it's often difficult to motivate them to do anything when I'm not around to bug them. This is a wonderful idea-- since the cane is with them night and day! Very safe, very effective and ingenious sets of exercise.

    Hey Mark, it is ok to mention that you took cane lessons from Soke McNeill and Goju-Shorei before Cane Masters was founded. After all many of the techniques and terminology comes from Goju-Shorei.
