If you don't care for Tatiana's growls you might not like Jinjer, but give it a shot. Many who dislike growls tend to warm up to Tatiana. She's hypnotising and a beast.

I tried for years to get into the growling, but i really couldn’t with the exception of Wintersun maybe, and some Epica but that’s about it.

I have never cared much for growls, especially if a singer has a great voice like she does. She has a strong voice in the up tempo part where she sings clear. However an occasional 5-10 second growl for dramatic effect on a lyrical role in a song I can get into. Like I enjoy a growl here or there on Unleash the Archers because primarily Brittney Slayes is doing the majority of singing. I do like this song in general for the music and when she sings clear!
But to each his own. :)

Regarding her "Satanic" voice: If you were a selfless fish (Pisces) who wanted to see the world but was a bit skittish, and then got into the nets and was hooked by handsome butchers who proceed to rip away your scales and entrails (emeralds)... you'd growl too! So you see, sometimes the lyrics call for extreme vocals in a song. Tatiana (who's not singing as someone possessed, so you can toss the garlic back into the spaghetti sauce) wrote an incredible story and sang about it the way it deserved to be sung... as with most of her songs. Some vocalist just keep singing in their nice and charming voice even when the lyrics call out desperation. Not so with Tati. Her extreme expression - a rare ability - adds so much more to a song... especially if you follow the music with the lyrics and how the beautiful cacophony tells the story.

Haha Mike - loved your "that's what I like" and then "Noo!" when she went growling again. I know that - first time listening to Arch Ennemy I thought "wow, cute front woman" until she started to sing, and then the thought was "what the hell you're getting with her at home and once forgot to put the trash out, or clean the floors :D Anyway, let's admit, Tatiana is excellent - even honestly I can't listen (or at least take pleasure listening) to all their songs. But excellent musicians and a versatile and perfect singer for what they do!

My three favourite songs from Jinjer are Teacher Teacher, I Speak Astronomy, and the recently released live vocal video of Judgement and Punishment. In the latter you can very clearly see how she switches from clean to growl, and how the music switches as well.

Ahhh, it never gets old. Jinjer fans just sit here in our leather armchairs, polishing our Persian cats like Bond villains, and counting down the four bars of rimshots on our fingers... ;-)
Yes, it really is her voice. This is a technique called growling or gutterals, and it IS possible to do it without damaging your voice IF you do it right (i.e. with proper training) Tatiana's just very, very good at it, and her ability to switch from cleans to growls almost from word-to-word in some songs is outstanding. I'm afraid that pretty much all of their songs have growling in them though, so if that's a deal-breaker then too bad. Having said that, I never liked growling until I started listening to Jinjer a couple of years ago, so maybe give it a chance?
The official video for Teacher, Teacher is probably my favorite, since it gives you a flavour of what their gigs are like (I've been to one). Oon the other hand, since Ginger likes good 'proper' music videos, the one for Judgement And Punishment will probably amuse her (Tati having FAR too much fun playing a witch...)

Tati (normal voice): time for bed kids
Kids: awww mum we want to stay up and watch...
Tati (cooklie monster voice): GO TO BED...

This song has that huge contrast of the different styles. I am no huge Jinjer fan, but the few other songs I have heard from them are not so bipolar as in the growling blends more into the song than here, but Pisces is the ultimate "wtf" moment for any reaction channel and it never gets old... I'm sure someone more into the band can recommend you some of their other songs, but I like the "teacher teacher" one quite a lot personally.

"I Speak Astronomy" and "Judgment and Punishment" are my favorite music videos of their's. Live, "Perinial" is a staple. Just about every song of their's includes her growling.
I get that metal growls aren't for everyone, but there is no intention of representing evil with it - Christian based or otherwise. Just strong emotion. You might find some people commenting may be a little touchy on that subject. The "satanism" thing is something the metal community has had to deal with for years.

    The lyrics...
    Jinjer - Pisces
Step forward and meet a new sunrise
    A coward is shivering inside
Today I'll, I'll be a friend of mine who swallows
    Suffering with smile
    I drew a different reality
    With unconditional loyalty
Ego hardly can be piqued 'cause I'm selfless
    Scale armour belies
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    Scale armour belies
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    No promises I ever give
Don't rely on me and I won't deceive
The beginning or the end you can't tell
When I wave my fin and shake my tail
    I grew in different normality
    With unblamable morality
Hooks and nets are there for me but I'm skittish
    Scale armour belies
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    Scale armour belies
    Virgin innocence
    One being brings life
    Another runs for death
    Neptune's child shivering inside
    Drowns in the liquid gold
Cherished his life to the underworld
Meet me flashing when the winter cries
    Pisces swimming through the river
All their life against the stream
Searching for a hook to catch on
    And see their sun beam
    Then suffocate in painful tortures
On cutting tables of callous men
Under a knife of handsome butchers emeralds are ripped away
    Emeralds are ripped away
    Emeralds are ripped away
    Emeralds are ripped away

Yes, you really got a jolt in this one. Great Reaction! To add some info:
    1) The growling-style singing is sometimes referred to as "Fry Vocals". One of the best, if not the best, in the world at this type of singing is Canadian singer Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy, (but this is very, very heavy metal, so maybe leave it for a bit before trying): "Nemesis Live at Wacken 2016" at th-cam.com/video/UNPKGyYzPCo/w-d-xo.html;
    2) The world's leading authority on fry-vocals is US Las Vegas based singer and vocal coach "Mary Zee" (Zimmer) at "VoiceHacks". She has done a number of online videos of how to sing this type of vocals, and the major sub-genres within it, and how to do so without hurting your throat. Most interestingly, however, she (Mary) and Floor are old friends -- Mary once toured with Floor when Floor had her own band and Mary was in another band. Mary has also done some breakdowns of Floor's singing in online videos as well.
    Keep well!

Jinjer's been around since 2009, so Mike might be thinking of some other band. I am fairly new to Jinjer and while I'm not a huge fan of harsh vocals, I do appreciate it at times when it's used as a contrast. I feel that "Pisces" does that very well, as it is a self-reflection on the singer Tatiana's dualistic nature. All songs I've heard from Jinjer includes her harsh vocals, but again - I am quite new to this band and perhaps someone else has got more accurate information.
A personal favourite of mine is "I Speak Astronomy", which I'd place in the progressive metal/djent category (I'm a proghead at heart). Technically complex and dynamic, it took a couple of listens until I _really_ started to appreciate it. Another nice one is "Teacher Teacher" - and once again, it didn't win me over on my first listen. It felt too disjointed, but after a few times I really started to like it.
    Thanks for the reaction!

Bad Water has only clean vocals, and maybe Beggars Dance, but that is not a proper full song. I Speak Astronomy at least has very little harsh vocals, only two times at the beginning and the rest is clean. A mixture of harsh and clean vocals is kinda their key style though, and what most people enjoy. I personally think it adds to the variety of the songs.
Their instrumentals can be pretty hard to follow if you don't have a good ear for it. Took me a bit of time for some of their harder songs, but they pretty much trained my brain to make sense of it, and now those songs are some of my favorites.

      @calanor4130 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Dark__Thoughts Yep, I saw Jacob Stewart's comment about "Bad Water". I agree that switching between clean and harsh adds variety; well, that goes for switching between other vocal techniques as well. What you say about training the brain makes sense to me, it kind of "clicked" after a few listens. I feel that Jinjer might have expanded my taste in music a bit, which doesn't happen all that often to me.

    • @Dark__Thoughts
      @Dark__Thoughts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@calanor4130 If you're not used to odd timings, tempo and beat changes, etc then it can be just too much for your brain to follow.
I had real trouble at first with Sit Stay Roll Over and other harder / faster songs of theirs, and I suddenly realized what non metalheads hear, when they say they just hear "noise" when they listen to metal.
The more you listen to it though, the more you adjust. I started to dissect each instrument and part of a song instead of taking it all in at once, and kinda trained my brain to entangle and make sense of what previously was a mess.
This also helped me to appreciate instrumentals in other bands and their songs more, because I feel I kinda pay more attention to them, or have a better focus for what is going on in a song.

    • @calanor4130
      @calanor4130 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Dark__Thoughts Well, I've been a prog fan for many years, so I am used to weird time signatures. Still, I sometimes need a little time to adjust - you should have seen my expression when I listened to Yes' "Close to the Edge" for the first time 😄

I've got a band for you. They are a fast rising family band composed of 3 brothers and two sisters ranging in age from 13 to 21. They are an impressively talented band called Liliac. Here is a link to one of the singles from their upcoming album Queen of Hearts which will be released October 30 #goosebumps The name of the song is Nothing:

If you like clean powerful vocals, kind of an 80s vibe but modernized, check out Canadian power metal band Unleash The Archers and their song Abyss. The lead singer Brittney Slayes has got an amazing voice. I chose this song specifically because some of their songs do have minor growl parts in them as an accent, but this song doesn't. It is an epic song and if you do decide to check it out, please don't listen to it beforehand. Genuine first time reactions are best. 🤘🇨🇦

Jinjer is a combo of singing and growls in all their songs. However, I think you’ll grow to appreciate the bands talent and artistry. The lyrics are great as well. I suggest an actual live performance to get the real deal and also how charismatic Tatiana is as a performer. Perennial live at Wacken, who is gonna be the one, or try Judgement and punishment one take vocal performance.

A great song by them that doesn't have any growls is Beggars' Dance, no video and really short but it is awesome and always puts a smile on my face. Maybe double it up with their only full-length song without growls, Bad Water. I Speak Astronomy only has a bit of growling, and some epic belting at the end - watch out for the fake ending though. No really great concert video for I Speak Astronomy yet (though the 2018 Summer Breeze video is decent but the sound quality isn't quite there) but the official video is beautiful. Perennial at Wacken open air is the next lightest. They are generally better in concert, or at least more impressive. I never liked growls until I discovered Jinjer, but Tatiana's have a way of growing on a person. Cheers!
