This is my jam: contemporary American art music that requires metric and melodic execution at the highest levels. Just magnificent. Not sure modern audiences can achieve the level of concentration needed to appreciate this kind of show anymore (Star of Indiana Bartok show was the end of the challenging music IMHO). Oh, well, at least there are synthesizers and huge props cluttering the field now…
Absolutely unbelievable what Zingali was able to design without Pyware or a computer or any other tools. He created in his mind and wrote it down. A true genius.
totally agree! In '84, George Zingali told me that for the next season ('85), he was going to do something "totally outrageous" and that he wanted to do something "completely off the wall". He said that he thought about starting the show "in no particular formation with everyone scattered about like an exploded asteroid that slowly comes together to form one big 'bleepin' formation". He also said he didn't know how he was going to pull it off or if the other staff would go for it, but it didn't matter because he was going to do it anyway. George was a brilliant mind always trying something new and creative. After watching this show, he definitely did what he said he was going to do...He's a pure artistic genius (RIP). what you said there, and what you can hear on this old video, is the basis for MY argument, there is no drum and BUGLE corps today. The sound they (Garfield) coming from the horns, just reaches out and slaps you in the face. Also notice these old (equipment) recordings, virtually NONE are performed in a dome. I can't think of anytime (in those days) where a drum corps show was in a dome. OF course there weren't as many domes then as now.

Some guy named "sqiurmin", I believe, recorded your Finals performance from the stands. The sound is clearer, IMO, than the DCI recording and the crowd is pretty silent as far as idle chatter goes. He actually posted the BD and SCV shows also.
This video is a perfect example of why i actually prefer "hi" or "single-camera" drum corps performances. On the PBS broadcast the hi-camera cuts-away to the pit at around 12:30 or so and i've never seen, until this video, how the corps connects to form the final single-line formation. I must be a junkie for this sort of thing because FINALLY seeing how they do that made me almost fall out of my chair as i've never been able to visualize it in my head. Such a great show. I'll never forget watching this live :)
It is funny because I marched Cadets and I just recently saw the high cam of the 92 show. I never realized how the drill looked because I was performing it and then only saw the PBS broadcast. I'd also love to see semi finals performances from the years I marched and others. DCI and the corps could make a some loot by selling high cams and semi performances.

@@timber72 Were you in SCV? that show was legendary. It isn't a popular opinion but I feel like you guys, Crossmen, and Madison should have been ahead of BD in 92. Also, SCV's design team should have left the props and stuff in the show. I saw an early season performance recently and I got chills, especially when the guard came up for the bottle dance wearing the classic uniforms.
People don’t appreciate how INNOVATIVE this was for the time. Drill just wasn’t commonly done to this artistic of a level. The corps is literally ALL OVER the field from side 1 to 2, from to back, and groups were capped at like 128 at the time. Other groups were still mostly symmetrical.
A superb corps during the Zingalli era. He was creative and innovative, and everyone else was playing catch-up. When George left drum corps, it was corps loss.

Wow. Just wow. Crowd appeal and technical excellence. Hornline as brilliant as any of Crown's best and much much LOUDER (just can't beat G bugles). This show would still win DCI today.
It would not. While I love this style drill and into the 90's and early 2000's, that's just not rewarded. CG staging is...not good; and they would consider 'multiple responsibilities" ("why aren't they smashing bugs and rolling over?").
I marched Profanation in high school (93) and it was freaking hard. Tons of mixed meter. This was the inspiration. I think we watched this video ALL THE TIME that year. This is my favorite show ever. My cousin was in this show.
5:48 to the end of the opener is such a freakin’ cool “push” to the end. The music is just so dramatic, dissonant, and intense. I absolutely love it - can’t stop replaying that chunk!
Just amazing! It was Garfield or SCV all season. Both were fantastic! But Garfield had the demand and cleanliness. What a killer brass book. Only a small handful of corps could play that book today, and even fewer could play that book while marching that drill.
Mike Klesch wrote the brass book in '85 (I believe it was his first time doing so)...not bad for someone who played the bass drum in '82, and then was drum major in '83.

Not everything that he created made it to paper. Sometimes he'd just go on the field, wave his arms around, and it happened. It was amazing.

They would have been penalized for using formations that take up the entire field (leaving no room for props!!!)

I was there! Some of the best finals were at Madison. Great memories.
I was there sitting in the first row of the upper deck in Camp Randall stadium. They really poured it on the next night.
