LACoFD Battling Massive 3rd Alarm Commercial Structure Fire with Collapse: Huntington Park

  • Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Gage Avenue and Atlantic Avenue for a reported commercial building fire. Engine 165 was first on scene and found a large metal tilt up commercial building with heavy smoke and fire showing. Firefighters at first went into an offensive posture to attack the blaze but quickly switched into a defensive posture as conditions rapidly deteriorated. As a result, the fire was upgraded to a 2nd alarm. After a long and hard fought battle, the fire, which later became a 3rd alarm, was knocked down with the use of ladder pipes. The cause of the fire is under investigation by investigators and other fire department personnel.

This shows how little can be done to fight large fires. The firemen do an incredible job and we are all great full to them .some pay the ultimate price for keeping us safe.

Above a certain size, it's not about extinguishing the fire anymore, but rather letting it burn down in a controlled manner while avoiding loss of life and further damage to neighboring properties.

Any firefighter can only do as much as they can with their equipment available. Nobody can do much against the fierceness of this inferno other than to let it burn itself out. Thank you to the hero firefighters for the dangerous work they do. I tip my hat to all of you brave men...and woman...

Calm down, we're just doing the job. It's just bloody fire, it's not like we get on the truck ready for some last stand at Thermopylae facing a horde of Persians.
We appreciate the sentiment, but seriously it gets a bit much sometimes and it's actually embarrassing. At least the firefighters I work with and I get red faced and don't like the over the top zealous behaviour and words.
A simple, I don't think I could do that. Thanks... is more than enough and if you EVER get a firefighter looking for or loving the 'admiration', they are what we refer to as... Tools.
Child birth, something I personally think is 100x harder than putting out a building fire or responding to car accidents.

2 Engines, 1 Tanker ,1 Ladder , 1 Trolley to Transport Fireman to the Secene, Command Vehicle (Usual a Big Transporter with the Technical equipment for Local communication and Information ), Municipal Fire Chief and his Deputy, Section Leader, County fire Chief in thier own Cars that have Sirens and Lights. . Yup. Once those walls fall in it's very hard to get good water on the fire. But it has enough holes to burn like a blow torch. Bad combo.

. . . what can be seen is that any under-dimensioned attack against any over-dimensioned fire is a waste of anything: of time, money, energy, human resources and any other resources you might think of - as long as you aren't able to capture more energy than the fire releases you aren't able to win the fight and you just are wasting precious resources on fighting the fire which better should be spent for protecting exposures . . .

I am begining to see patterns to these. Most industrial fires are going to be total losses. The businesses simply have to lock their buildings down like fortresses and there is no access for the firefighters to get in quickly. By the time a couple doors are finally broken, the fire has developed to the point that a standard rapid attack hose simply doesn't flow enough. Taking a big hose in is going to take the whole engine to maneuver and will have to be written off as that first truck has no choice but to retreat.
Most industrial fires are going to be a case of having attack lines dampen the fringes to hopefully hold a fire at bay until sticks start to get positioned and up to get main attack streams up. A main attack stream like you see on the back of the pumper trucks and the ladders on the ladder trucks is likely to core out most houses when used on them, which is why they tend to be used only on a fully involved house.
A thousand of gallons out of each hose and each 2 of the big hoses take a pumper with the ladder truck and a third supply pumper truck on a hydrant to supply. On top of that, they have to be careful how many hydrants on a pipe circuit are being pulled from, or those big hoses start to look anemic. The in ground pipes have their supply limits too. The whole process builds a temporary infrastructure in a fast paced chess game against a threat that could easily start taking out square miles of city buildings.
Just incredible what they achieve so quickly even if it looks like they are moving in slow motion sometimes.

It's designed to work like that. Could be a blitz nozzle, a portable deck gun...... there are many types of large volume nozzles that are made to be static. Reduces man power needs. Holding a 2.5 for any period of time is physically taxing. When designed for unmanned use they can be 3 or even 4 inch high volume devices.
