  • This is our second barn tour on the same families operation. There is approximately 150 years between the first barn we toured and the time this second barn was constructed. The purpose is similar, animal husbandry, but the methods employed are vastly different. This is called a "slat barn" or a "deep pit barn". It increases animal comfort and reduces the labor to maintain. The animal waste is contained and used in a productive manner to fertilize crops. Much here is said about the process and result of breeding. Production is the goal and those seemingly small increases can make the difference between success and failure for today's farmers. Crossing various breeds can gain benefits from each individual's strength. Here we talk about terminal cross breading, which means the benefits are only captured in the first generation. In other words to breed the second generation would have the reverse outcome for these animals and what was gained in the first cross would be lost in the second. Farming and raising livestock remained unchanged for hundreds if not thousands of years. In the last 100 years the average farm went from feeding some 30 people to today where the average farm feeds around 160. Innovation and hard work are what drives the American farmer. If these are lacking the landscape of rural America will change, and it won't be good. History has proven that as the farmer goes, so goes the country. People need to eat. Who's going to feed them? FARMERS!
Thanks for watching. Hope to see you on our next barn tour.
