This is one of the first things I learned how to do on a grand action, I still have a lot to learn, grand pianos have a lot more parts than the vertical I'm more familiar with.

What is the remedy if there is still too much drop after the drop screw is turned to the left all the way tight, and there is still too much drop? I have the let-off set correctly. I'm restoring a Bush and Gerts 4' 10" baby grand.

You would typically first make sure there is enough drop to make the letoff adjustment and then adjust the letoff and finish with the drop adjustment.

The hammer drops when the key is pressed slowly. When the key is played with more velocity the hammer goes into check, yes? How does the action decide what to do? And is this something that needs to be regulated? On my Chickering quarter grand from the turn of the century, some notes go to check much easier than others.

Yes, there is more than one regulation adjustment that affects the checking of the hammer. The adjustment of the backcheck itself along with aftertouch and a couple of other adjustments. Everything really works together.

Thanks for this video Mr. Howard, related drop off, I would like to know if the drop off is too big ( lets say 6mm ) what effects would it cause to my piano when I play...??? Does it affect playing pianisimo ? Thanks in advance

Yes, you would have less control when playing soft and when repeating notes.

Lovely, but I wish you explained in which way it affects the piano playing and control !

Basically if you have too much drop you'll have a more difficult time with fast repetition.

@@howardpianoind Thank you. Do I increase also the control over pianissimi ? So, for instance with Ondine/Ravel and Feux-follets Liszt, that's what I want. So why not having minimum drop every time (eg., 1mm everywhere) ? Increased need for maintenance ?

Yes, having it this close will necessitate adjustments more often.

This is one of the steps that is possible to do with the action out of the piano.

It doesnt mean anytning unless you explain what it does to the music or at least PLAYING the piano. Does it feel lighter to play or can you play faster. What does it to the pianissimo or speed of the note repetition. I wanna know things like THAT
