What if Yui's Selfishness isn't about 8man's love but that she wants everything to be happy and favorable for her/not changing anything about their friendship... late night thought btw.
Hey ! I really want to applaud and thank your bravery to defy the absolutely blind hate that got out of control for some reason and proudly state your opinion about such an Amazing character ( and I Say this as someone who prefers Yukino but overall love all three of our somewhat autist, yet undeniably kind hearted main characters). Hope you the best
I will never forgive this fandom and how they decided to antagonize Yui for no reason whatsoever. Yes, Yui has the lower hand of symbolize the opposite message that the story through 8man was trying to tell. 8man wanted a genuine life with all the flaws and problems that could bring as he was ready to get hurt for it, Yui rejected said life cuz that would mean accepting things her and other people didn't like. Her way of acting is more idealistic, in a way of "Find happiness for everybody" even if she is not being honest with herself to do it, but that doesn't mean she is some kind of devil woman that purposely tried to mess with 8man and Yukino. Sadly, as the story aimed for a different direction for 2 of its main characters (Yukino, 8man) then suddenly Yui's actions rivalized them, even if that's not even her intentions. If Yukino is passing a hard time in her life in which she needs to prove herself, then Yui's actions of help are interpreted as "Yui is trying to underplay Yukino", If 8man wants to accept a genuine life and its problems then Yui's actions are interpreted as "Yui is a selfish girl that just cares about herself and not the other" and that would be true if that was the message that Wataru tried to tell, but the story never put Yui's actions in bad light, Yui's behavior was never portrayed as "bad" even when her goals and beliefs were opposite of 8man's. She just wanted to protect one of the things she loved the most, the club and her friends, but as the story progressed those actions would interfere with 8man's goal, so suddenly she is a selfish bitch. Yui's arc is about what is more important to her, the general happiness for everyone or her own happiness? does general happiness fulfill her personal happiness? Is she willing to let go of general happiness to obtain her personal happiness or will she sacrifice her own happiness in order to achieve general happiness? For so many years Yui decided to be selfless and helpful cuz that was what let her be happy, even if sometimes she had to sacrifice herself, but now one of the biggest events in a person's life came for her, to fall in love, to actually fall in love, would she hide her emotions? How long could she pretend those emotions aren't there? What about other people's emotions? What about 8man's emotions? What does she need to do to obtain general happiness for the 3 of them? Or who is the one that has to sacrifice their own emotions? Even when the story entered the point in which the "romantic decision" was fated to happen and the story turned into a little competition in which girl was the one that full filled 8man's wishes and even Yui (who was more thank ok to keep her own emotions hidden) started to be more assertive towards 8man the story also shows that even then she had trouble to do it cuz at the end more than her own wishes she wishes for everyone's happiness, but not everybody can win in a genuine life, you can lose or you can win, and 8man ends up ultimately (and without even knowing) rejecting Yui when she herself never got the opportunity to reveal her feelings for 8man. Yui has the bad luck of being an "idealistic" character in a series that """"""tries""""""" to be as realistic as possible, so obviously her behavior is going to be antagonized by the readers and even more the ones that already wanted the 8manxYukino ending, as Yui's character was contrary of what the story was telling and every time she "succeeded" to bring that idealistic life in which "everyone is ok and nobody has problems" that meant a direct attack to what 8man wanted to achieve, he didn't want more lies, he didn't want to pretend, he wanted to life live and all the things that would come because of it. Yui worried about the things that life could bring and said things would hurt her and her friends so she decided to sacrifice her own emotions and even went to the point of trying to make everyone else to do the same. The fandom's problem was to choose that Yui was totally wrong and was the evil of the story when that was never the case. Yui is Yui and she had a way she lived all her life, that's how she deals with her own problems, if that is contrary of what 8man wanted that not her problem as she never intended anything bad for him either. Nobody is a bad person for wishing for everyone's happiness, just as nobody is a bad person for full filling their own happiness. That's why I will always pretend that Shin never happened, idk what is thinking Wataru but there was no reason into bringing into existence that horrible sequel. Is like he heard the fandom's interpretation of Yui's character and decided to make it canon. And Im so sad that people in this fandom simply just decided to gave Yui the "worst girl" status
Yui is best girl for me. Hachiman talks about finding something "genuine" and it being possible only through struggling through their situation. However Yukinon was pretty much trying to escape the situation and distance herself while Yui was pursuing her emotions with Hachiman. Isn't that what Hachiman intended for? Not shutting out your emotions and pretending for it to be okay? But isn't that what Yukinon was doing? I feel so sad for Yui, she deserved much more. They didn't even give proper closure to her. Like after the stupid (and illogical) confession seen, Yukinon and Hachiman never talked it over with Yui! At least towards the end, they show her still not having given hope, when she comes and asks for her request.
Not gonna claim I understand the story in all its integrity, but having dug some reddit on the subject I have to somewhat agree with your main statement here. As I see it, before WW lost his sense of direction and overall passion for Oregairu (I believe it happened around tome 11 or 12), it wasn't a clear indication that Yuigahama is a villainous scum like she is perceived by the majority of the current fandom. What I personally like about the title is that vast greyareas are left for the reader to interpret, and this of course includes Yui's experience. But for whatever reason that freedom was taken away from us. I mean it's not for us to decide whether those 'crappy sequels' were needed or not, but WW could've done a much better job, especially in the case of Yuigahama. My problem is that I already knew she was deeply flawed (and self-aware). I knew she was conflicted. I even knew she wasn't a good match for the protagonist. I mean, given so much depth earlier in the story, the only thing we couldn't have confirmed about her without preludes and monologues is basically her _actually_ all this time being downright evil. The most important thing is that her 'epic proportion bitch status' is not even well-earned! So yeah, I think WW basically took this beautiful gem of a character and retconned the crap out of her. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually was some kind of a 'parting gift' to those who always have been strongly biased towards Yukinoshita.
SPOILER WARNING FOR SEASON 3/TBE ENDING!!!!!!: I saw people calling Yui selfish for confessing her feelings in the very last episode. Which honestly I think is so stupid; she’s not being selfish, she’s not taking anything away from them, as she’s not trying to break them up. She specifically states that she realizes they are together now, but that she wants to continue to hang out with and support two of her best friends because she loves both of them. She’s addressing her feelings and making sure she’s being genuine and not hiding anything, whilst also coming to terms with and accepting the fact that she’s not going to break Yukino and Hachiman up, and that they both like each other and deserve each other.
This needed to be said 👏👏👏 Like you, even as I like Yui more I completely get that Yukino is the best option from the story perspective. I got convinced even before I started reading all the analysis about the meaning of story and all that stuff; but man, some people are vicious, they absolutely HATE Yui. Not just don't like, or see her on a bad light, but completely despise her, specially in the oregairu subreddit and it caught me off guard. Maybe it's because I just have seen the anime and not read the novels yet, but I simply couldn't understand where such a bad lens came from.
Not all haters of Yui is irrational and unreasonable. One of the reason why she is hated was because of the Tobe-Hina confession. Yui insisted on helping Tobe even though they didn't need to help Tobe because they already knew the outcome. One of the reason she insisted that event was because she too wanted to confess. Because of that event the relationship in the service club went downhill spiral.
Yeah but she couldn’t predict the spiraling down of the service club and I could see someone do such a thing and for all the good things yui as done personally this can pass
What if Yui's Selfishness isn't about 8man's love but that she wants everything to be happy and favorable for her/not changing anything about their friendship... late night thought btw.
Yeah season 3 brings a new perspective to the table. I can see this being a possibility
