i sometimes experienced that as well, the indirect fire units move closer to the target even i don't order them to. the most bizarre case is when my static artillery emplacement (the Wehr 105 mm howitzer gun ) suddenly got the red flare and bombarded even though there are no enemy units, flare, or spy plane present anywhere near.
There's a couple things that could be happening. If you issue a direct attack order (right click on enemy unit) your attacking unit will chase that enemy unit to the ends of the earth (always hit S after issuing direct attack orders to avoid this). If you attack move to an area you have no vision of, the indirect fire unit will move straight to the location until they self-spot an enemy, which is always a bad thing. What you want to do instead is use the barrage or attack ground (hotkey G) orders to tell indirect fire units where to attack. Or attack move to a safe position behind your infantry squads. With the howitzer getting hit by an off-map, it was probably spotted by either an enemy recon unit like a T70 in recon mode, or a stealth unit like a sniper or pathfinder. Those units can provide tons of vision without the enemy realizing they're being scouted.
Big fan of the US mortar halftrack here. And actually this stray can be viable on channel maps like red ball. Then the vid starts and I see it's from a 1v1...:D classic skip. Those mortar wipes on the Fallschirmjäger though. Too juicy!!!
you really under utilized the WP barrage ability. It slows infantry down and also drains their health when they are caught in it. Combine WP barrage and regular barrage for super effective infantry wipes
Although physically painfull to watch, it was fun skipper also your halftracks are rushing in because you keep right clicking the units, you should right click once to prioritise target, then hit W (stop) so they dont move after

Once played with a slient teammate in a random online 2 vs 2 ai. He went full mortar track spamm, he must have lost like 12 of em. 5 of his trucks got hit 1 time by a mortar barrage so he disembarks and goes to repair them. Ai rushes 2 grenadiers in they steal 2 tracks, his friendly at gun and the ai's mortar teams nuke the remaining 3 trucks. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Armed Falls are the op-iest of this game (tell me a strong troop, if I'm wrong). They are simply unreal, but like many other axis troops. But, hey, it's good for you right? So when you play axis you can relax (axis need 50% effort, allies 150%). 90% of players have far better stats with axis, and this for me mean something... It's very sad you don't care. I remember when this game came out, i said "FINALLY A FAIR COH". They change my mind patch after patch, now is simply a clone of the outrageous coh1... PS: I play all factions, and when I play axis I can win almost blinded and with an arm tied :)

Did you figure out why the half-tracks were moving close for the barrage ability? I'm going to try this strategy, and see if the half-tracks react the same :-)
Typical OKW behavior if it's not fallschirmjager spam it'll probably be panzerfusilier spam, too bad you did not have your demos here Skippy. Though I must admit that it was pretty funny seeing mortar halftracks wipe some of them out.
just saying, i sometimes misclick like, you use ability with left click, but your subconscious would literally right click after that, maybe that's the reason why sometimes your mortar truck runs up, instead of firing mortars it's just the stress and decision making causes misclick (because you uses right click most of the time in the game)

He's bad. Plain and Simple. Not only was he bunching up 3 Volk squads on a single point (Unaware that it does not increase cap speed and the fact that he's aware Skippy is using Mortar HTs) He was getting tripled capped and clearly doesn't understand how to micromanage. A proper OKW player would have put up a Walking Stuka to wipe out those mortar half tracks or opted to save up for a KT to assume dominance on the points. He had massive map control and thus he should have been floating in resources to formulate a proper counter-attack. Instead he opts to invest in a bunch of Fallschirmjagers and raketens; all of which do nothing against the Mortar HTs (Given Fallschirms had their fausts taken away and Raketens are stationary weapon teams). To top that off, the OKW "main" is using Fallschirms as assault troops instead of infiltration/ambush units. Their usage should be akin to Stormtroopers where they'd cloak by control points and keep a supply line severed but instead, he has Fallschirmjagers fighting alongside his Volks against Riflemen that have no Anti-Infantry capability. It's just expenses on top of expenses that are not giving him any returns. Skippy even says out loud that he was expecting a Puma which would have quickly neutralized his Mortar Half-Tracks. Yes, Skippy had zooks but a proper puma player would have just kept his distance since he's not gonna be concerned about penetration and his smoke dischargers could nullify the auto-aim of his Riflemen and allow the Puma to drive backwards after taking one or two HTs. These are the dullards that I call my "brothers-in-arms".
