  • San Jose unanimously passed a controversial gun reform proposal - stores have to video-record all firearm purchases. This comes at a vulnerable time for the city. Raj Mathai spoke with Joe Cotchett, a prominent Bay Area lawyer and legal advisor to Mayor Sam Liccardo, and Brian Wang, a gun instructor, for their input.

The reporter interrupted Brian Wang several times while he was speaking, but didn't interrupt Joe Cotchett once...This segment should be be renamed "Mostly one side of San Jose's Gun Reform"

Mr Wang for Speaker of the House! He actually has a brain and knows how to use it. You can tell Cotchett has no idea about guns and is only spouting off his bias against them. With all the violence of criminals are citizens supposed to defend their families with squirt guns? Grape jelly? its illegal to impose all these extra fees.supreme court will rule that.

How does video taping purchases help prevent gun murders?

It will all end up in courts and be reversed. I grew up there and left in 93 and moved to Stockton.

I agree with Brian. It's not really the surveillance cameras pointed at legal gun shoppers that concerns me as much as the additional gun tax and private insurance fees that brother's me. The other guy claims that it will cover over an incident involving your gun. I don't know what exactly that new gun insurance actually covers. Then he says people can't drive without car insurance. Does he really not know how many uninsured motorist are driving around in the county. Smh. 😔

Straw purchases are already illegal. Let's just make murder illegal, oh wait.....

The difference is that one is a right and the other is a privilege. You aren’t born with the right to drive hence why you have to earn it. Says a lot about that lawyer if he couldn’t figure out something that simple. 🙄

So...... what will videotaping the purchases do to stop gun violence?

2A means you can have what ever kind of gun you want. Government has no say in it.

Judging by the comments section, only the San Jose city council is in favor of this nonsense.

Hey there Joe, maybe you need to educate yourself on the actual deaths per capita for each country. Hint: ours is not #1.

Yet another reason to never put a foot in California. I’ll stay in Texas and in the south.

Anyone else notice the lawyer didn’t address the annual fee like Brian was discussing? He switched it to insurance instead. e. So if someone comes in from say Milpitas and shoots someone in San Jose, then all San Jose gun owners will be financially responsible for that violent act. The person who got their first firearm for protection in San Jose is basically paying for that act of violence. For clarity, there are two types of additional finances that gun owners pay. One is the annual fee for simply owning a firearm to pay for firearm violence AND liability insurance. Also notice that they didn’t even have any additional penalties for those who commit violent crime. You’d think they’d say something like “double jail/prison time for those who are caught using a firearm for a crime.” Racially motivated crime penalties are enhanced, why don’t they enhance firearm violence?
