Gents, please stop using all those pedals when demonstrating guitars it would be nice to hear the clean and drive from the amp to better judge the guitar, if you must use pedals use them for your jams.
you lads are literally the best in the TH-cam guitar scene. great info, funny as hell and last but not least you play the shit out of these guitars. nice one mates. Thank you
*Iommi all day, every day. Even if you get lucky and Gibson didn't do "as per usual" and forget some frets or put the wiring harness in upside down, the Iommi is stuffed with fantastic parts, will be put together extremely nicely because it's a signature edition, and if you've never played an ebony fretboard, you're really missing it.*
using so many pedals completely destroyed any tone comparison. never mind one very custom guitar. which obviously had a distinct sound. they seem to search for the worst tone they can get on the cheapest guitars they review. not that these videos are serious comparisons, but it's annoying hearing complete fizz every video.
MrSongwriter2 Chappers understands guitars... understands heavy drive tones... but hasn’t got the first clue about clean tones I’m afraid. You can tell this early on this video when he asks the Captain “can I have a clean tone?” The Captain replies with surprise in the affirmative and Chappers proceeds to play with what is clearly a crunch tone... and a disappointing one at that. 🤷🏼♂️
The pickups in that particular Epi. are more like EMG'S so its like comparing apples to oranges, you guy's should have used the Epi. SG400 pro with it's classic pickups, that would have been more of a fair comparison in my opinion.
...you didn't inform us what pickups are on the gibby?...what tuning heads are on both???...did the epi have a push/pull on one knob???......(when comparing 2 guitars...I would suggest using the same amp/settings/cable...forget using pedals and just use an amp with clean and distortion channels)......may I also say the humor was spot on however, as usual...
Yeah it feels like they forgot the 3 minute chunk of the video where they actually talk about the differences in specification. As entertaining as always, but very half-arsed as any kind of comparison.
Hi, guys. I love what you do. For what it's worth. I've talked to Gibson Guitars several times about the difference between Gibson and Epiphone. Gibson always uses better wood grades no matter what the price range of the guitar. So they will always be slightly superior no matter the price range. I'm sure you already new that. BTW. Chapman Guitars are awesome. Love what you are doing.
"They're both great! I mean they're worth their price, obviously you should buy the most expensive one, but the cheapest is good too, I mean... Ah fuck!"
Hrm... I wonder how fair this is. The Tony Iommi signature SG has original Gibson pickups. I think the Epiphone G400 Pro would be a fairer fully fledged Epiphone pick for a Gibson VS Epiphone battle.
LogiForce86 Me too. At this point why don't you spend a little more to buy a real Gibson? Better use a G400 Pro. It costs around 400£ and it will be a more fair duel
I just picked up a mint condition Epiphone SG Pro 400 for $75 and it’s freaking awesome. At $400 retail new, it’s a lot of guitar for the price. At $75, it might be my best deal ever.
Yes please, more recognizable riffs on this channel. It is nice to have the repeaded riffs so sounds can be compaired betwen videos and guitars/amps. BUT please do throw in more recognizable riffs especially when someone is so connected to a guitar like here. AND of course ANY kind of shootout comparisons like this you can possibly think up, all day every day! for hours and hours, please.
Bryn Auger I understand what you're saying but I heard them play something recently I can't remember what, they had the other guy from Dorje again I can't remember his name. My memory is terrible probably earlier onset alzheimer's but they did an altered version of whatever song. I think it might have been from a sounds like AC/DC and it just sounded terrible. The stuff that they played that was supposed to sound like AC/DC sounded nothing at all like they'd play. Personally I hate the same riffs they play over and over again but I can understand why they keep playing the same thing to give people a better understanding of the differences between the guitars
This is not an accurate test. Anyone can tell you that paint color has an immense impact on tone. I mean seriously, the iommi sig sounds so much brighter as all the light is being absorbed into the guitar. Not only that, but how could u guys not realize that one has a smaller pickguard than the other? The added plywood enhances the bass frequency response as their is more total wood as well as enhancing the sustain. Anyone who can't hear these differences or claims that they make no difference are clearly trolls. Pay no heed to them.
Oh dear me, how could I forget the inlays??? The dot inlays allows better spacing when playing staccato by narrowing the frequency range by lessening the highs and lows, hence the circles whereas the crosses lower the mid frequency on your amp as the arm is closer to the "bass" string on the guitar. Don't let anyone tell you anything about tone woods or pickup covers
Ronald Felei please do not use your ears when comparing tones. Materials have no affect on tone it is only the appearance of the instrument that matters.
As an American, can confirm that "dear" is only how you start a letter to someone you don't know. Also more "deer" is said than "dear" here. We just call expensive stuff "expensive."
You guys give me so much info on these two guitars. Thank you so much. I did buy the Epiphone SG Pro Limited in black. I love it show much. Thank you for love of the instrument that is the guitar. Keep up the great videos and love of guitars! Many thanks for California!
Captain Lee playing Metal/Black Sabbath? That's a shocker, also for some ideas how about: - Cheapest ESP vs. Most Expensive LTD - Most Expensive Squire Bass vs. Cheapest Fender Bass - Most Expensive Schecter vs. Most Affordable Schecter - Most Expensive Boss pedal vs. Cheapest MXR pedal
Also if I ever bought a Hatsune Miku pedal I bet that'd be an awesome piece of gear to use while in Japan; It sounds somewhat pointless but absolutely hilarious at the same time
I own the Iommi SG from Epi and it's the best SG out there IMHO. I particularly like the Iommi humbuckers, the small pickguard, the 24 frets, the edge mounted output jack, the non-Pleked graphite nut, and the horn mounted strap button. The only complaint I had out of the box was the fact that the tops of the frets were rough, as if a step were missed during building. I cleaned them up myself and haven't looked back. My SG needs have been filled.
Not sure about that. Those Epi Iommis are still making £400+ online 2nd hand & I don't think you'd get much more for the Gibson faded. The few I've seen sell so far have gone for a similar price to the Epi's so you'd lose around £100 on the Gibson.
Sorry but this is oft repeated and just not correct. New Gibson SG Standard 2017 at GC: $1400. Used SG Standard: $700 to $800. You do NOT get your money back on used Gibbies if you bought it new more than any other guitar.
Muix eranga Okay, am I, like, the only person in existence who buys a guitar *without* the intention of selling it? Does _nobody_ else on this planet actually plan to keep a guitar when they buy it?
I honestly feel the Gibson had the better sound. The tones, sustain and look is better to me. I've owned a G400 epiphone and it's a good guitar, but it doesn't sound like a gibson.
Between the tommy iommi and the gibson faded there are a lot differences on the sound, but I think that if u compare the faded gibson with the epiphone G400 the sound pretty much the same
Shouldnt be, theyre brilliant. I have an epiphone brent hinds, Gibson Faded and a Jackson RR Pro. All brilliant once you get used to sitting between your legs its not too bad.
The Toni Iommi signature seems more Gibson than Epiphone with all the bells and whistles. The Toni Iommi signature pick-ups are Gibson pick-ups and they are quite different than many standard alnico sets because they are a hybrid pickup with Alnico 2's, Ceramic magnets, wax potted and sealed with epoxy, the price of those pick-ups alone drives a solid argument to get one of these Epiphone models. Therefore it would have been more interesting to go with a comparison between the Epiphone G400 pro, and the Faded Gibson SG. I believe it's a good idea to get an Epiphone SG when you're either first starting out or on a steep budget and upgrade the pick-ups to classic 57's, burst buckers, or your favorite non Gibson pick-ups like Seymore Duncan's when/if you feel dissatisfied with the Epiphone ones and want something a bit better. If you have the money to spend however you can't go wrong with Gibson SG's, I'd prefer one a bit nicer than the faded, with trapezoidal inlays and other classic features but that's just me.
my 2016 SG Faded plays like a dream!!! i'll never sell it. I love the thin nitro, the wear over the years is cool and the neck just feels better and better the more you play.
I like that the guitars are balanced on different sides of the left and right. I happen to have two different sounding IEMs due to different fittings in my ear. Many others may experience the same effects even with something as simple as slightly more hearing damage on one side.
And how much had you had to drink before filming this? I did learn one guitar was black and one wasn't. All good though this was proper entertaining. More like this ha ha :)
There is a physical difference in the way the neck is connected and how it is attached to the body! The Gibson gets amazing sustain because the neck extends further out from the body at its connection point. The Epiphone can be a little short on sustain but it has a more stable neck attachment to the body which can give you some very deep tones in the mid-range! I'm not sure if the string length is identical but the Epi's can be difficult to intonate properly!
Notwithstanding the dill and sausage detour, I enjoyed the video. I own a Faded SG very similar to the one used, and I was happy to see it tested in this way. 7 seconds of sustain on the Gibson versus 3.5 seconds on the Epiphone was the most telling moment for me. The extended comparison on the D chord was also interesting -- clearly, the pickups on the Gibson were brighter and had more chime than those on the Epiphone (although both had Gibson pickups). One problem I have with my Faded SG, which I don't with my SG Standard, is significant neck dive. It would have been useful, I think, to have considered that issue when comparing the 2 guitars in this video. Nice video, though. I always enjoy them, even with the dill and sausage.

Gibson Les Paul, used, and the guy before me put locking Grovers on it,....it never goes out of tune,.....I know a lot of people have tuning issues with Gibsons,...but I'm pretty sure it can be corrected,....because I have locking tuners on my Fenders, I got in a bad habit of only putting like a turn and a half on the strings when I put them on any of my guitars,...they all seem to stay in tune except for the SG,....someone on here said if you put 3 to 5 wraps around the post it will keep them in tune,...they are probably right,...but I'm getting locking Grovers for my SG because I'm lazy......Also they make roller bridges for Epiphone's,......Don't get them for a U.S.A. Gibson because they WON'T FIT

Gents, please stop using all those pedals when demonstrating guitars it would be nice to hear the clean and drive from the amp to better judge the guitar, if you must use pedals use them for your jams.
John Jackman also not using a 2,000 dolars amp on a 500$ guitar
Donald Lentz I don't think that law would apply to the Captain and Chappers, as they are from the UK, yes?
Also, they usually use different amps, which pisses me off.
@@realalienstories Captains amp sounded so much better not the god aweful fizz of chappers
@@SeaDrive300 Trump is a giant bell end. He should be banned.
you lads are literally the best in the TH-cam guitar scene. great info, funny as hell and last but not least you play the shit out of these guitars. nice one mates. Thank you
Not sure Chappers understands "clean tone". It sounded just a little less distorted than usual.
Faux Pas Well, if it was with the Iommi SG, the pickups really don't allow clean tones :D
@@Tuukkis that wasnt just the sound of hot pickups. That was mild overdrive. Sounded like a preamp pedal or boost was on
i love my epiphone SG! thanks for this video, im loving it more!
this show is like top gear for guitars, I love it
Jack Whittaker The fact that you put it that way made this show better than it already is
At this price:
Gibson: Sound and feel.
Epiphone: Looks.
Rob's face at 12:17, the look of utmost shock at the two screw method
and that simultaneous head shift was pretty sick
*Iommi all day, every day. Even if you get lucky and Gibson didn't do "as per usual" and forget some frets or put the wiring harness in upside down, the Iommi is stuffed with fantastic parts, will be put together extremely nicely because it's a signature edition, and if you've never played an ebony fretboard, you're really missing it.*
I really like the part where you compared the sound of one chord. It's easier to find out the differences!!
Rory, great editing! as always.
MartinRonky cheers mate!
using so many pedals completely destroyed any tone comparison. never mind one very custom guitar. which obviously had a distinct sound. they seem to search for the worst tone they can get on the cheapest guitars they review.
not that these videos are serious comparisons, but it's annoying hearing complete fizz every video.
Chappers always seems to have a really trebley fizzy tone on a lot of the videos.
Chappers likes his tone like his underpants..... DIRTY
The pickups in that particular Epi. are more like EMG'S so its like comparing apples to oranges, you guy's should have used the Epi. SG400 pro with it's classic pickups, that would have been more of a fair comparison in my opinion.
3:01 where did you get the audio of me playing guitar?!
...you didn't inform us what pickups are on the gibby?...what tuning heads are on both???...did the epi have a push/pull on one knob???......(when comparing 2 guitars...I would suggest using the same amp/settings/cable...forget using pedals and just use an amp with clean and distortion channels)......may I also say the humor was spot on however, as usual...
Yeah it feels like they forgot the 3 minute chunk of the video where they actually talk about the differences in specification. As entertaining as always, but very half-arsed as any kind of comparison.
I lost it with the piano when they were doing the Vulcan hand sign 😂
The Captain ripping on some Sabbath, now THAT's "dear" in the US!
I absolutely adore how chappers pronounce "Mjölner", that's real quality content for ya
Derek Trucks plays his SG clean :) no pedals just a loud ass amp and a guitar!

You'd be spening too much for the pick up upgrade,....just use the money to get a used Gibson SG Special
At $75, it might be my best deal ever.
how bro
I don't know if these videos are getting more informative, but they are becoming increasingly entertaining :)
Miku is my favorite guest character on the show.
Yes please, more recognizable riffs on this channel. It is nice to have the repeaded riffs so sounds can be compaired betwen videos and guitars/amps. BUT please do throw in more recognizable riffs especially when someone is so connected to a guitar like here.
AND of course ANY kind of shootout comparisons like this you can possibly think up, all day every day! for hours and hours, please.
doo do do do DO do DO do
NowPleaseNot seven nation army.
NowPleaseNot listen to more music. itll help you know what songs are played. nobody wants to hear the basic songs played over and over. it gets boring
Bryn Auger Norman's Rare Guitars caught hell over playing some Hendrix riffs.
Ooh, now that's sarcasm! lol:)
The Epiphone sounds darker, not brighter
Ronald Felei please do not use your ears when comparing tones. Materials have no affect on tone it is only the appearance of the instrument that matters.
Ian McDaid someone gets it :)
As an American, can confirm that "dear" is only how you start a letter to someone you don't know.
Also more "deer" is said than "dear" here. We just call expensive stuff "expensive."
What do you call dear stuff though?
@@chrisdee5032 People say near and dear. Some people just have small vocabularies lol.

Captain Lee playing Metal/Black Sabbath? That's a shocker, also for some ideas how about:
- Cheapest ESP vs. Most Expensive LTD
- Most Expensive Squire Bass vs. Cheapest Fender Bass
- Most Expensive Schecter vs. Most Affordable Schecter
- Most Expensive Boss pedal vs. Cheapest MXR pedal
Also if I ever bought a Hatsune Miku pedal I bet that'd be an awesome piece of gear to use while in Japan; It sounds somewhat pointless but absolutely hilarious at the same time
There are NO CHEAP Japanese ESP's !
If you guys ever reviewed some Hagstrom guitars... Please?
No because they don't carry them, why would they review a brand they don't carry..
@@rickeyryan303 so start selling them then !
My SG needs have been filled.
real difference is when you come to sell em ...you'll get close to your money back with the gibbo ....just for the headstock
Not sure about that. Those Epi Iommis are still making £400+ online 2nd hand & I don't think you'd get much more for the Gibson faded. The few I've seen sell so far have gone for a similar price to the Epi's so you'd lose around £100 on the Gibson.
You can find Gibson SG Faded with Gibson gig bag for UNDER £400 online second hand...
Muix eranga can confirm, just sold an SG faded, did not make anywhere close to what I payed
Wow. I woulda thought those iommi pickups would have been a bit brighter considering who they're made for
Between the tommy iommi and the gibson faded there are a lot differences on the sound, but I think that if u compare the faded gibson with the epiphone G400 the sound pretty much the same
As noodling does tell a good tale of the quality of a guitar, so does rhythm playing. I would like to hear more rhythm tests.
the iommi has a much better jack location
cgsluppen yes! agreed, unless you have an angled cable then its not that bad
Just loop your cable through your strap like its a wireless receiver cable. Problem solved
No way love my face mounted Jacks
cgsluppen get a mid 70’s SG I’m pretty sure they had the Tony Iommi location, or a SG firebrand

Shouldnt be, theyre brilliant. I have an epiphone brent hinds, Gibson Faded and a Jackson RR Pro. All brilliant once you get used to sitting between your legs its not too bad.
Oh man I wish I could play like Chapman. "I just wanted to see what it was like playing at the top of an sg" Praise guitar king Chapman
Please vlog more! Telling stories and stuff are always great to listen to!!
I better comparison would be the Tony Iommi against, an LTD Viper 1000
Lunch time drinking? Very funny video, guys.
"We're sober" Lol, no you're not.
my 2016 SG Faded plays like a dream!!! i'll never sell it.
Only drunk people need to tell others they are sober.
SZCZERZO KŁY only a sith deals in absolutes
Gibson Custom Shop Zakk Wylde signature vs Epiphone Zakk Wylde signature.
And how much had you had to drink before filming this? I did learn one guitar was black and one wasn't. All good though this was proper entertaining. More like this ha ha :)
I guess you missed the "We are sober!" disclaimer?!
Likely at least two pints then
Isn’t epiphone to Gibson like squier to fender?
There is a physical difference in the way the neck is connected and how it is attached to the body! The Gibson gets amazing sustain because the neck extends further out from the body at its connection point. The Epiphone can be a little short on sustain but it has a more stable neck attachment to the body which can give you some very deep tones in the mid-range! I'm not sure if the string length is identical but the Epi's can be difficult to intonate properly!
I find it incredible that Tony lost his fingertips and still shredded, just goes to show there are no excuses if you're committed
Waiting for 'Hank Hills' comment.....
So true
Music Ghost hank hills.
Every time I see one of these old Faded models I look at my 2019 SG and hate it.
I feel that. I've got a ~07 G-400 in ebony and it's... I love it, but it's kinda bland.
The man/woman that does the editing on these movies is a pure genious :)
