Nick Drake is one of my favorite artists of all time and I only discovered him from the Volkswagen commercial using Pink Moon in the 2000s. It's incredible to me hearing his being mentioned on mtv in 1984.
Baby Ruth And Butterfinger- Interesting to see that the Nabisco Company manufactured these two candy bars at this time period. Pringles Light- I like how the coloring on the Pringles can color coordinates well with the woman’s swimsuit at 8:08 and 8:31. Kmart Grand Opening Sale- Seeing the inside of this Kmart throughout this commercial is a huge nostalgia jolt for me. It reminds me of spending many Sunday afternoons shopping there with my parents when I was a kid.
14:20 - Seeing this old K-Mart design brings back memories. Christmas of 87, when I was 10, I was dreaming of a Nintendo with Super Mario Bros. and Legend of Zelda. My dad and I were looking in the electronics section Black Friday, and that would be the first time I saw Zelda. Seeing that gold box with the tiny display window with the small bit of the gold cartridge showing through was so mesmerizing, and made me want it even more. I would find a NES with Mario, Zelda, and a TV for my room to play them on under my tree the next month.
Better Off Dead is a true comedy cult classic. Discovered it as a teen, and still love it to this day. Fun fact - The film’s writer-director Savage Steve Holland got his start as a cartoonist, and created the Whammy character for the game show Press Your Luck. A year after Better Off Dead, he would release another teen comedy with John Cusack in the lead called One Crazy Summer (also great). He would create the Fox cartoon Eek the Cat in the early 90s, and mainly works on youth television (he directs a lot for Nickelodeon and Disney Channel) these days.
First saw those two films ("Silver Bullet" and "Better Off Dead") on a SelecTV broadcast as a baby that my father recorded them! One was scary and the other was hilarious!
I prefer Cherry Coke over Vanilla Coke (even though it tastes like cough syrup haha) and I grew up seeing bottles of Oil of Olay since my grandmother used to send some from inside a box [Filipinos call it "balikbayan box"] and with all sorts of goodies like Baby Ruth bars
0:35 - I'll never get over the fact that they changed the butterfinger recipe back in 2018. It was my favorite candy bar as a kid and now it's just not the same 😢
Silver Bullet is a fun movie, but what’s even better is watching Siskel and Ebert review it on their show. Ebert found it funny, and worked almost as a spoof of horror films. (He goes as far as comparing it to Airplane), while Siskel criticized the violence in the film, and found it dumb. Their argument about whether it was intentionally dumb and humorous gets quite heated.
Siskel and Ebert had some sort of crusade against violence in cinema back then and were not kind to horror films in general. They even had an entire Sneak Previews special in 1980 about the early slasher films called "Violence Against Women" th-cam.com/video/TbJFtnThgy0/w-d-xo.html Ebert is one of my favorite critics but was not always perfect and often let his own personal prejudices and hang-ups completely dominate his reviews (see "Blue Velvet"). Siskel...I really don't consider him to be on the same level of Ebert as a film critic.
@@80sCommercialVault Ebert struck me as a bit kinder to horror films, as he would give thumbs up to films like The Last House on the Left, the original Child's Play or Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Siskel seemed to like them less, and especially had a problem with seeing children in peril in horror films, which was an automatic turn off to him.
The Dick Van Dyke PSA was for the National Fire Protection Association. I saw a lot of them on the old Romper Room show on WOR channel 9 back in the day! RATT and Bon Jovi? I think they put them in reverse! Concentrated 80s!
The Dick Van Dyke PSA you're talking about that the first several seconds of is being shown in this video can also be seen in its entirety here: th-cam.com/video/y5kCo_Jc8Wc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VCgySVAuvjmSzvxK
FWIW "Slippery When Wet" came out in '86 - that ad with Ratt was when Bon Jovi was touring for their 2nd album. But yeah, in late '85, they were probably more popular than Ratt 🤘

Better Off Dead is one of my favorite movies of all time. “I want my two dollars” will never get old.
@@hopegrimsley3427 I love Curtis Armstrong in this movie. "This is pure snow! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?!"
I'm sorry, Bon Jovi is OPENING For Ratt?! What a time to be alive.
Hell yeah, Juicy Fruit chewing gum. Beats the hell out of Fruit Stripe chewing gum, great lineup 80sCV
These are a great set of commercials from 1985, especially from MTV.

Oh man, haven't heard that Entertainment Tonight theme in a while. Another great batch! MTV is always so cool to see!

That juicy fruit lasted soooooooo long!!!
Seeing the commercial made me want some. I guess the ad still worked!
I love the MTV segments and the CBS Dan Rather segment I would love to see more like that!!!!
Lots of great memories. Thank you!
15:57 Yes, Indianapolis viewers of this video, that is THE Diane Willis of Indy's ABC affiliate WRTV-TV!
It's like Punker Punch predicted energy drinks by at least 30 years.

When MTV actually played music videos and who could forget all the Vjays

Now I'm wondering what they thought about Scream (1996). That WAS a spoof about Horror movies (while still scary).
@@TheonetruewonderflyI believe Evert enjoyed the original Scream, while Siskel voted thumbs down.

Seeing that Silver Bullet trailer triggers my need for a 24 hr. Stephen King channel that streams all of his classics

2:35 - That's Traylor Howard, the actress who played Natalie in Monk.
I always had a crush on Martha quinn

1:01 Mick Fleetwood had a women's clothing line? That's kind of weird to me, but whatever LOL.
"There's NO WAY I'm watching that Tommy Shaw video again! Click."-Person who taped this 39 years ago.
The channel eventually changed back to MTV and the video was recorded again when it reaired later that night.
Awesome!
I'd cut my finger off for a case of *Those* Butterfingers.
The modern day ones taste absolutely nothing like they did back then
I WANT MY TWO DOLLARS
Ray Buktenika for KMart.
