I had never heard this song before and yet...wow...it is like Taichi in a song... I have been rewatching and rereading the series lately with mainly the sole purpose of understanding why Taichi gets to me so much. On first watch I thought it was about him being the disadvantaged party in the love triangle, his constantly having to see who Chihaya becomes when she thinks about or sees Arata, but no: it's exactly this song. He is the most real character, the one whose thoughts, insecurities, fears, shame, and self loathing reach out to us the most. I never thought in theory that this would be a person I relate to, but the more he expresses how much he wants to be someone other than who he is, how his battle is with himself more than anyone else, and how he shows such an intense level of self awareness and strive to change make him such an endearing and heartbreaking character.

You know that moment when you feel so strongly for Taichi? For all of his effort, his struggles, his guilt, his frustrations; every sweat and tears, every time he holds his breath and lets it go...so you badly want him to exist as a physical being beside you so you can just hug him, tell him you understand, that people see his efforts and assure him it gets better from here? Yeah, you make me feel that thru this vid. (╥__╥)

I love Taichi and instead of focusing Arata on becoming the master and Taichi going after Chihaya, I actually want the opposite to happen. I want Arata to win Chihaya's heart (I think he already has) and I want Taichi to become the master since I find myself rooting for him in every single match, especially against Chihaya. All the characters of this show is really admirable to be honest.

I don’t think so! Sacrificing Chihaya to become the karuta Master when Taichi has been in love with Chihaya since childhood to lose her to Arata is NOT what he considers winning! He loves Chihaya more than he wants to become the Master. He only wants to become the Master because he thinks Chihaya will notice him then and maybe learn to love him. Chihaya’s feelings for Arata is all just connected to karuta, if you think about it. What other personal interaction has Arata had with her even from childhood other than karuta related? She has had an all around connection with Taichi. Taichi knows what she likes, hates. He knows when she’s troubled, sad, happy and he has always, always supported her with forming the karuta club because he knew that is what she loves! If that’s not sacrifice and hasn’t earned her love for him then sorry but she doesn’t deserve him!

@@atsiawrecke7750 Well yeah, it's Chihaya who doesn't deserve Taichi. Chihaya has never considered Taichi's feelings towards her and she has always somehow used him to fulfil her WISH of playing Karuta together, and this doesn't sound like love to me. Taichi's love for Chihaya is of course pure but that doesn't mean Chihaya should fall for him. You cannot force love. I haven't seen an instance where it is somehow indicated that Chihaya has ever considered Taichi as a romantic partner. On the other hand, I think the show makes it clear that Chihaya and Arata's feelings for each other is not all about Karuta. Arata clearly confessed and correct me if I'm wrong, the color red has been associated with the Chihayafuru card as a way to let us know about Chihaya's awakening feelings. Furthermore, every time the Chihayafuru card was brought up, Arata would appear on screen. What I'm trying to say is, red is the color of love and in the show it was definitely connected to Chihaya's feelings towards Arata. Not that I am a big fan of this ship, the only ship I'm strongly inclining towards is Arata x Shinobu but I think Chihaya is clearly attracted to Arata. Don't know about the endgame though. (By the way, I haven't read the manga)

Good point! I’m starting to think that Chihaya doesn’t deserve Taichi at this stage of the anime but I think because Chihaya grew up with Taichi, she hasn’t associated what she could possibly feel as romantic feelings towards Taichi. There have been moments when Chihaya would see a new or different side of Taichi and she would have that cute, wide-eyed look in her eyes as if seeing him for the first time. She also expressed jealousy that time (one of the early episodes) she caught Taichi with a girl calling him a personal name and she made it clear to the girl that she owned Taichi’s time. With Arata, because they had that long separation when he moved away, she is discovering the Arata that grew up with her not being around so maybe there is a little element of excitement at seeing the grown up version of the Arata she learned karuta from. The way she panicked when Taichi left the club as well as how it tormented she was by realizing that she very well may have been bashing his feelings for a long time is a clear indication that there is something there deep in her heart for Taichi. Unfortunately, Chihaya seems to be one oblivious girl when it comes to the affairs of the heart. Sometimes when I think about it, poor Sumire has worked emotionally harder for Taichi in the short time they’ve known each other. There are such superb characters in the series and sometimes I wish Suetsugu would ease up a little on karuta and have the characters enjoy some down time and do some really big fun stuff so they and we can get to know them a lot more personally. That’s how good this series is, it affects us emotionally! Great discussion!
