Most black holes I find on SE, I do not find any planets orbiting stars where it is close enough to see the details of the black hole. However, I did find multiple planets when I looked at the black hole in the center of the largest known galaxy, IC 1101, which has a correspondingly huge black hole in the middle. I think I even found a planet with life orbiting a star close enough to see the details of the black whole, the only planet with life I found on SE through my own random searching. (My black holes, though, have a lot more orange, and do not show the flow of the surrounding white-yellow-orange lines, so maybe I am missing an add-on or don't have it on the best settings.)

I used the mods in your link (on which page exactly in the forum did you get your mods from?) but my black hole does not look as nice as yours....it is much more yellowish and not so "cloudy" ...did you use some special settings

My PC is only a year old. Asus, quad core, 8 gigs ram, 2 gig GTX video card. I think the video card is just not doing the job. It was fairly cheap. I just have a hard time wanting to shell out 150 bucks for a good card lol

what you see is the photon sphere caused by disk accretion before light travels into the event horizon. On far bigger Black Holes they can appear as Quasars google that up will give you some insight. in other words it's just light beeing forced into the black hole. For Example Quasars billions of Lightyears from earth are visible for us, meaning that those lightsources are even brighter than all stars in that entire galaxy. Hope that helped. So in other words it is indeed "just" a black hole.

Not if the accretion disk emitted enough energy to heat the planet. The disk surrounding the black hole could give off more light than any single star if it was going fast enough.
Space engine honestly deserves more attention. Whenever I try to introduce it to someone they are like, "Oh you mean space engineers?"

It is absolutely not realistic. A planet orbiting around a black hole rather than a star would not be habitable. In reality, it will be super cold af.
