It's so sad that when people think of Lady Marmalade, they think of the 2000 version when Patty Labelle is the one who made it a huge success.

To be honest, the original version was written in 1974 by Eleventh Hour, however the girls achieved more success with their soul version.

@@jen1132 its sad because many individuals who profess to be fans of true great music are in reality shortsighted and can't appreciate the history of it, this version inspired the 2000s version and was merely done so it could be marketed with a horrible movie, know your facts, know your history 💯

Remember the album jacket/cover? All of them looking down at the camera, made Patti seem so tall wearing those platform shoes and then you see her in person and she's so short. She ushered in a view of what was to come in the '70's - 80's and '90's vs "techno" till we all die. No matter what I'll take the oldies of R&B, Blues, Rock, so called Disco, or Reggae and the gems that came out of those years any day vs todays nonsense.

@@naurking5388 as a sound engineer I understand what you mean. But it’s still true though, nowadays we over-engineer the voice so that it can get streams. Back then auto tune was just used to balance what the microphone can’t her and background noise but now we use it extensively for marketing purposes.
Got to give respect for artists like T-Pain for really pushing the boundaries though.

It's the beat and repetition of the song. Repetitive songs stick in your head because they can loop. Like "This is the Song That Doesn't End" (edit wrote Never Ends, that's wrong) gets stuck. You can start from anywhere, "Gitchie Gitchie Yaya Dada" goes right into "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?" goes into the next and the next. Because the "Creole Lady Marmalade" line fits the end of every one, triggering the next refrain and on it goes.

    • @richardbrinker9364
      @richardbrinker9364 8 ปีที่แล้ว +70

There were two African-American artists in the remake, and Patti SLAYED all their vocals. I don't think it has so much to do with color as it does with newer generations having lost the ability to bring soul to their music. Audiences back then had a greater demand for quality. Today's audiences just demand skin and stage antics. If you go on today's pop artists videos, you'll find fans defending them by trying to argue that the voice isn't as important as song choice and that lip syncing is only logical because their idols can't be expected to sing, dance, and walk across the stage at the same time. Seriously, these are the comments they are posting.

Richard Brinker Yes you are right. The modern aids to concert performance are extraordinary. Even I could sound good ! Fortunately as a' Baby Boomer' I saw the great acts live years ago. Art Neville, who played the Hammond organ on "Lady Marmalade", passed away on July 22nd, 2019 at his home in New Orleans, he was 81 years old...
Art Neville was a keyboardist and singer who was a founding member of the Neville Brothers and the Meters. Known as 'Poppa Funk', Neville was a staple of the New Orleans music scene, who helped shape the city’s signature sound...
The Meters, formed in 1965, were among the originators of funk, performing their own songs as well as backing artists including Lee Dorsey, Robert Palmer, and Doctor John. They were honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018...
In 1977, Neville founded the Neville Brothers along with his brothers Aaron, Charles, and Cyril. Their notable songs include “Sister Rosa” and “Healing Chant,” which won a Grammy Award in 1989...
In later years, Neville formed the Funky Meters along with some members of the original group...
He continued playing with them until his retirement in late 2018...
    May he R.I.P.

No disrespect towards Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim, and of course Missy Elliott but their version will never hold a candle up to this 1975 original

But this version didn't sell as much it was only because back in the 1970's we didn't have the ways to get your song heard like today we didn't internet, cable was just starting with 1 channel, no cell phones, no facebook, no instagram.

My mom would always play this in the car everyday when i was a child and I would always beg her to keep playing it over and over again until i was 10. Seven years later I come back to this song remembering all the lyrics.

Patti is one of the best live vocalists, but this is a direct lip sync of the studio track. This show didn’t let performers go live. If you really pay attention you can see where it was obviously shot from different angles and edited. It’s more like a “live” music vid than an actual performance.

Lol you sound like how I was/am. I'm nearly a decade older, but I stay criticizing my generation and their perception of singing and timeless music. Somebody from the 2000s gotta carry it on and let people know. Keep it up, Rochelle it is 🤌🏾👏🏽
